Ida Wilhelmina Lawrence

  - These are some special memories of Ida Lull -- whom we all called "Mama" -
She lived a beautiful 99 years of life. She was a teacher. She taught us all so many things, things like how to tie a shoe. How to fish. Mama could catch ten fish in the time it took Pop to find the bait. She dearly loved the outdoors. She taught us hHow to find wild asparagus. How to play the organ. How to make the best apple pie. How to grow the sweetest strawberries. How to make jewelry, crochet, how to prune roses. She crocheted afghans for us.
Mama had energy! She never walked anywhere, she ran. She was able to take meal for four people and effortlessly, stretch it to twelve. She could whip up a dress in no time. She didn't use patterns. She was full of life and interested in so many different things.
She watched the Apollo 13 mission on t.v. Here was a woman, born in Nebraska, who traveled from Nebraska to Wyoming with a team of horses and a wagon, who not only was able to adjust to the many changes her world went through, but who never lost the interest, excitement, and enthusiasm of her youth.
She taught us the importance of sharing. She was always ready to welcome friends and relatives into her home. She made her home a marvelous place for a child to visit.
She taught us to be patient in the face of chaos that comes with being the mother of 10 children (Harold, Bob, Bud, Wallace, Vivian, Evelyn, Helene, Lois, Kenneth, Jeanne) and being married to Pop (who could be cantakerous character) for 71 years.
She taught us to enjoy the quiet side of things too; sitting out on Mom & Pop's front porch on Fox Street in Englewood, sipping iced tea or lemonade, watching the lights below and listening to the sound of trains passing.
After Pop died and Mama got older, when bits of her memory were slipping away, she had some difficult and painful days but she never complained. Her strength, her kindness and maybe most important of all, her sense of humor never deserted her, not even at the end.
I think the thing that we loved most about her was the way she made us laugh, her smile and that sparkle in her eyes. And I think that is how should want us to remember her most.
I grow roses now because of her. I am her granddaughter, Jodie Putman.
