  Illon, March 22. — The death of Ida Steele, wife of Elwin Sherman, occurred at her home on North Fourth avenue at 7:30 o'clock last evening. Tuesday morning she suffered a stroke of apoplexy. Yesterday afternoon she suffered another which caused her death. She was highly respected by all. She was a member of the Baptist Church and the societies connected with it. She was a member of the Scther [?] Sunday school class, which was organised 30 years ago. She was born in Fort Plain February 10, 1861. With her parents she came to this village at the age of one year and had always resided here. She was married May 10, 1861. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Steele, her husband, and three sons. Cole, Albert and Charles, and one daughter, Sarah, one sister. Mrs. H. C. Fay. and one brother, Claude H. Steele, also survive. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

  MRS. ELVIN SHERMAN

  Mrs. Elvin Sherman died Thursday evening at her home in North Fourth Avenue, apoplexy being the cause of death.
   The deceased was born in Fort Plain, February 10, 1861, and at an early age came to this village with her parents and had resided here ever since, May 10th, 1881, she married Elvin H. Sherman.
   During her many years residence in this village she had been a member of the Baptist Church and its various societies, and was always a great worker for the church cause, in which she will be sadly missed.
   At the time of her death she was the teacher of a large class of young ladies in the Baptist Sunday School. In her younger days she was a member of the George Scriber class in the above Sunday School, the members of which for many years have made it custom, wherever they might be located to meet each other in the village and hold their annual picnic and outing in which Mrs. Sherman took an active part. The class has been organized thirty years and this is the first death.
   She was a highly respected neighbor and much attached to her family and friends. Deceased is survived by her husband, and four children, three sons, Cole H., Albert E., Charles W., and one daughter Sarah Elizabeth, all of whom live at home, also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilten Steel; one sister, Mrs. Harey ? Fay of Second Street, and one brother Claude Steele of Grove Street.

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, NY, Thursday, December 10, 1925)
  — Elvin H. Sherman, 74, a resident of Ilion for 60 years, died November 29th in Jordanville, where he has resided since last April. Mr. Sherman was born December 28, 1950, in Otsego County and moved to Ilion at an early age. In 1881 he married Miss Ida Steele, who died in 1907, leaving four children. In 1918 he was married to Miss Frances Delano, who survives. For 43 years he was engaged in the clothing business, selling out the business which he conducted under the name of the Sherman Clothing Company to M. D. Angell. He was a member of the Batptist church and of Ilion Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Cole H. of New York, Albert E. of Utlca and Chas. W. of Illon.

Silas K Mather

 - Obituary (The Otsego Farmer, Cooperstown, NY, November 3, 1911)
  Silas Mather of South Hartwick, who has been in poor health for some time, died at the Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, on Tuesday evening of last week. He went to Oneonta on Sunday and at 10 o'clock on Tuesday he underwent an operation for cancer, from which he never rallied. He was born in the town of Edmeston thirty-three years ago, and lived there until about a year ago, when he purchased a farm at South Hartwick. He was married on March 22, 1911, to Miss Sarah Sherman, of llion. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Mount Vision, and since his residence at South Hartwick had won a host of friends, who mourn his early death.    He is survived by his wife, his father, Henry Mather, of North Norwich, three brothers, Charles, of Mayville, Arthur, of Morris and Adrian, of South Hartwick, and three sisters, who reside at Morris. The relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
  The funeral was held from his late home on Saturday, at 10:30 a. m., his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Jeffrey, of Mount Vision, officiating. Interment in the llion cemetery. In addition to his immediate family the following relatives from out of town were in attendance at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Wilber and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Birdsall of Morris, Albert Keith and daughter of Sidney, E. H. Sherman and Bert Cole and Mr. Sherman of llion and Mr. and Mrs. H. Fay of llion. and several others.
   Mrs. Sarah Mather and Mr and Mrs. Adrian Mather, wish to express their sincere thanks to all the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted them during the sickness and death of their husband and brother: also for the beautiful floral offerings.

  Ilion — Mrs. Sarah E. Fay, 90, of 46 Benedict Ave., died yesterday in the Rogers and Lucey Nursing Home, Mohawk, after a long illness.
  She was born Sept. 28, 1868, in Ilion. daughter of Hamilton and Harriet House Steele. Her grandparents were among the original settlers of this area.
  A lifelong resident of Ilion, she was married to Harrison Fay in Ilion in 1890. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
  Surviving are four sons, H. Stuart. Ilion: Leslie S. Sarasota, Fla.; Elvin C. and Fred
C, both of Ilion: 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
  The funeral will be at 10 tomorrow from the Applegate Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Lacey, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating.
  Burial will be in Armory Hill Cemetery.

  Ilion, June 20 — Harrison C. Fay, 79, former Ilion village trustee, died yesterday at his home, 30 Shull St., in that village. He was a boyhood baseball mate of the famed Cornelius McGillicuddy.
  Mr. Fay was born in East Brookfield, Mass., the son of Lucius and Cornelius Chapman Fay. It was in his youth that he became an associate and fellow player with the now famous Connie Mack.
  He was an engineer for a number of years in Remington Rand and Remington Arms plants, and a member of the First Baptist Church for half a century. He was also a member of the Ilion Lodge 591, F.& A.M.
  Mr. Fay came to Ilion in 1889, where he married Sarah E. Steele on Jan. 1, 1890. He leaves five sons: Hamilton, a member of the Board of Education; Harrison, Elvin and Fred C, all of Ilion, and Leslie, Pensacola, Fla., 16 grandchildren and 4 great - grandchildren.

  Claude H. Steeel, 79, died Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. William Stern of 357 Vestal Road. Besides Mrs. Stern, he is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Max Albertsmann of Endicott and Mrs. Peter Albertsman of Trumansburg; a son, John R. Steele of New York City; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Harry Fay of Ilion, N.Y.; several neices and nephews. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Ilion, and Herkimer Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. The body was moved to the Walter J. McCormack Funeral Home, 216 Washington Avenue, Endicott, and was to be returned to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Stern, 357 Vestal Road, this afternoon, where friends may call.

  Ilion — After a brief illness, Mrs. Claude Steele. 73, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Margaret Dunkel, Ilion Gorge,
  Mrs. Steele had been an invalid several years and had been blind for the last four years.
  Mrs. Steele was born in Little Falls. daughter of Thomas and Anne Stapleton Canty. She was married to Mr. Steele ther [sic] Jan. 10, 1895, and they moved to Ilion immediately after ward.
  She was active on the Catholic affairs until her illness, and was a member of the Church of Annunciation, its Altar-Rosary Society and Ilion Court, Catholic Daughters of America.
  Besides her husband and sisters, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Max Alverson,  Mrs. Peter Alverson, and Mrs. William Stern, all of Endicott, and a son. Navy, Lt. John
Steele, stationed at New York.


Marriage Notes for Claude Hamilton Steele and Katherine A Canty

 - Wedding Announcement (The Eveingin Times, Little Falls, NY, January 11, 1895)
  Miss Kate Canty, diughter of. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Canty of Casler street, and Claude Steele of llion were united in marriage at St. Mary's deanery yesterday afternoon by the Rev. Father Donnelly. Miss Lizzie Collins was the bridesmaid and Edward Walsh of Utica the best man. A reception at the home of the bride's parents followed the ceremony. Only immediate relatives and friends were in attendance. Among those from ont of town present were Mr. and.Mrs. Michael Powers of Syracuse, Mr. and Mrs. Steele and Mr. and Mrs. Sherman of llion. Mr. and Mrs. Steele received an elaborate display of presents. They left on the 7:30 p. m. train for a wedding trip to Syracuse and on their return will take up their residence in llion, where the groom has a responsible position in the typewriter works. They will have the best wishes of Little Falls friends for a happy and prosperous wedded life.

  Mrs. Cynthia House, 81, widow of Franklin House, died in Albany Tuesday following a lingering illness.
   She was born in the Town of Stark, March 9, 1869, the daughter of David and Lucy Brenner Freeman. She was a resident of the Town of Stark nearly all her life, and was s member of the Methodist church.
  The only survivor is one son, Vernon House, Little Falls.
  The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 at the Swartz funeral home in Fort Plain. The Rev. Albert T. Strobel of the Methodist church will officiate. Burial will be made in the Van Hornesville cemetery.

   MOHAWK - Mrs. Margaret House, 76, widow of William House, Columbia St., died yesterday in her home after a short illness. She was born December 6, 1874, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of Henry and Margaret McIntosh Quinn. Her marriage to Mr. House took place in Little Falls on January 2, 1892. Mr. House died in 1933. She was a member of the Richfield Presbyterian Church. Mrs. House leaves three daughters, Mrs. Wesley Cristman and Mrs. Kenneth Barringer, this village, and Mrs. Ernest Eggliston, Richfield Springs; three sons, Charles, Richfield Springs; Edward, Utica; and Franklin, Ilion; one brother, Henry Quinn, Laurens, New York; one sister, Mrs. Miranda Rose, this village; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Frederick Fraser, officiating. Burial will be in Jordanville in the spring.

Since their marriage they had resided in this village where she was a member of the First Presbytertan Church.

  FT. PLAIN - Charles H. Steele, 82, died at 5:15 yesterday afternoon at his home on Webster Street. He had been ill several weeks.
  He was born Oct. 27. 1870 in Ilion, the son of Charles H. and Katherine O'Brien Steele. He was a 50 year member of the Ft. Plain Mason ic Lodge and also a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers. He had served as a telegrapher and freight agent at both Fultonville and Ft. Plain on the West Shore Division of the New York Central. He retired in 1940 when he was serving as freight agent in Ft. Plain. He had been a resident of Ft. Plain 25 years.
  The survivors are his wife, Mrs. Daisy Smith Steele of Ft. Plain; one daughter, Mrs. Flora Jane Yates, Ft. Plain; one grandaughter, Mrs. Robert Bower of Wautagh L. I.; one sister, Fiss Flora E. Steele, Utica.
