14766. Sylvia Barden

 - GFG - A
 - Newspaper Article (Utica Daily Press, NY, Wednesday, August 10 1927) (?)
A wiser if not a.sadder girl after a 10 days' escapade. Sylvia Barden, 15 years old daughter of Prof, and Mrs. Chester Barden of McCoonellsville, formerly of Utica, talked last night at the Utica Jail with her mother, who had been suffering untold sorrow for a word from her vanished daughter.
In another part of the jail  was Harry Bentley, who says that he is 24 years old, the partner of her adventure, who faces the charge of abduction or one of more serious nature.
Both were found yesterday morning, living together as man and wife, in a remote and isolated-part of the country, eight miles north of New Berlin, by Sheriff Arthur W. Pickard. The locating of the couple was the result of excellent work in following up a tip and was accomplished after a long search.
The Barden girl and Bentley are now held on a charge of grand larceny for taking the Cleveland automobile belonging to James Killian station agent at McConnellsville. The automobile is at the Jail also.
Mrs. Bardan, the girl's mother, stayed in the city last night. She will accompany her daughter, Bentley, Sheriff Pickard and Assistant District Attorney Charles DeAngella this morning to McCoonellville, where the couple will be arraigned before Justice of the Peace Chauncy C. Phelps.
The strange part of Sylvia's story as related to Sheriff Pickard last evening, is that she hat met Bentley but once before the Saturday of a week ago, when she departed with him for the 10 day's stay.
During that period of time, they spent several of the nights in the stolen Cleveland automobile by the roadside. Finally the located the farm of John Mudge, where they were discovered and where Bentley was working as a farm hand.
When discovered the girl told Sheriff Pickard that he had found her. Once she had ried to leave Bentley, she said. In Cortland, one of the several places they were in the 10 days, she started the automobile and tried to get away. Bentley jumped on the running board however, with the remark, “You can't get rid of me.”
Yet the girl apparently yesterday when found and later at the jail was not remorseful for the escapade.
The tip came to Sheriff Pickard yesterday morning by phone. It came from a man who lives in the vicinity of New Berlin, and who said that a Cleveland car had been seen about the section for some days. He gave the number to the sheriff; it was the number of Killian's missing car.
Bentley cam to Oneida --- years ----- already learned. The added bit of information that his name was Turnbull is and error, according to Sylvia.
Within five minutes, Sheriff Pickard and Under Sheriff Clarke were on their way to the farm, which the tip indicated was the residence of the missing couple.
It was located only after a long hard search, in which the two officials frequently went wrong, for the Mudge farm is back from the beaten path and among the hills. The officers went down the “River road” which follows the Unadilla River until they came to the hamlet of Columbus Quarter, a chance collection of four or five houses. Turning off the river highway Pickard and Clarke traversed a narrow track of a road. It passed into a thick woodland and then came out mid a rough clearing sown with bushes. A mile or so further on, they came to a tumbled down shed, in which they found an automobile. The licnece number was the right one.
At the door of the adjacent farmhouse, Pickard found Mrs. Mudge.
“Where's Sylvia?” were his first words.
  “Inside” said the woman.
Pickard found Sylvia inside wearing knickerbockers. He easily recognized her from her picture. In talking with her, she said that she was glad that she was found. There was no defiance of repentance in her manner.
The sheriff asked “where Harry was.”  Bentley was working across the creek in the fields, it appeared, and Undersheriff Clarke went to find him, while Sheriff Pickard stayed talking with Sylvia. Clarke might have had to wade through the stream, destitute of a bridge, had not a farmer taken him across.
Bentley tried to bluff the undersheriff at first, saying that he had to drive the team in and starting to dodge around the big wagon. He was finally impressed with the fact that he was under arrest and that driving in hay wagons had ceased to be part of his daily life. He was brought back to the Mudge farm house and removed from his farm clothes, to get dressed for the long drive. Sylvia replaced her knickerbockers with a dress and the group started for Utica. The girl drove the Cleveland car, while Bentley rode with Undersheriff Clarke, who drove the sheriff's car. They arrived at the jail about 2:30 o'clock.
  The Girl's story follows:
“On Saturday, July 30, I asked Mr. Killian if I could take his automobile to go to the beach. He had said that I could. I took my two cousins and their grandfather and a friend and went to the beach.
“We had a good time at the beach and happened to go to the skating rink, where I met a fellow whom I knew. He asked me to take him to Oneida. I did so and then came back to the beach and met my friends again.
Later I met Bentley and skated with him. He said that he had to go to Oneida and asked me to take him. We started about 9 (?) o'clock. And he took me to where he had said he lived, which was a restaurant. Harry said, “Let's ride back.” He said I wouldn't know the way and that he had better come with me.
We rode back to the beach and when we got there everything was dark and I couldn't find my cousins. We went back to Oneida to the restaurant again and had something to eat. Harry said that he would take me to relatives and directed me to drive over the tracks. After a time we came to an ice house, near which there was a residence, He told me to turn into the yard.
“We stayed in the car in this yard all night.
“Sunday morning we started for Norwich and went to his father's house. He introduced me as his wife and we stayed there as man and wife.
“Monday we went Cortland and got a paper. We drove part way back to Norwich and spent the night in the car at a crossroad.
“Tuesday we went to his father's house in the morning and then on to John Mudge's farm and stayed there at night.
“Wednesday we went to Oneida spending the night in the auto near the city.
“Thursday er rode on to a relative of the Mudge's and then went to John Mudge's”
The girl said that they stayed there until found yesterday morning. Bentley, who gives his occupation as laborer, helped with the haying.
The girl's story is corroborated by the fact that the state police found persons who saw both of them in Oneida Thursday, the day that Sylvia said they returned to that city.

 - Newspaper Article (Utica Herald-Dispatch, NY, November, 1921)
In view of his good behavior while confined at the Utica Jail, Harry Bentely, indited on a charge of abducting Sylvia Barden of McConnellsville, formerly of Utica, was sentenced by Judge Hazard in County Court this forenoon to serve not less than one year nor more than two years in Auburn Prison. In passing sentence Judge Hazard impressed upon the man that the offence with which he was charged is a very serious one and might result in 10 years in prison.
