Our entire community is saddened by the deep affliction which has befallen the surviving members of the Hoffman homestead. The family until a week ago consisted of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hoffman, better known as Squire Hoffman, their son, Herbert Hoffman, his wife and two children, Rodrick, aged about five, and Lora, aged three. Two weeks ago W. E. Hoffman and his son were suffering from sore throat. Last Monday the two children became ill and Tuesday night a doctor was summoned. Had there been any suspicion of the nature of the ailment that fatal delay would surely have been shunned. Mrs. Herbert was the next victim to yield to the malady. Thursday little Lora died, Friday Mrs. Herbert Hoffman died and Saturday night came the announcement of the illness of Mrs. W. E. Hoffman and the death of Rodriok. The family is well known in this vicinity, as their ancestors, the Getmans, Haners, Barringers and Tisdales, were among the pioneers of the town over a century ago, and all hearts go out to them in their sad home. Friday the remains of the little daughter were conveyed to the family plot in the Colombia cemetery, and deposited beside that of the first-born, and Sunday the two hearses bearing the remains of Mrs.Herbert Hoffman and the young son Rodrick wended their way into the cemetery, while pastor and people joined in prayer for the bereaved household.

The death of W. E. Hoffman, better known as Squire Hoffman, at 4 p. m. Monday, removes one who has spent the most of his life in this community. Born in the western part of the state, upon the loss of the parents he was one of a family of two boys and four girls who came to Herkimer County in infancy, where they were lost to each other for years. Dec. 30, '68 W. E. Hoffman was united in marriage to Miss Ellen A. Barringer by Rev. L. B. Barker. Their son Herbert arriving at manhood, married Bertha Huntley and resided with them. Early in November of 1901 the entire family including the two children of Herbert Hoffman were stricken with diptheria, and the death of Leora aged 3 on Thursday was followed by the death of Mrs. Herbert Hoffman on Friday and Roderick aged 5 on Saturday, Mrs. W. E. Hoffman following them on Monday at 6 p. m. Since that terrible time the father and son have lived alone in their desolate home, where the son has tenderly cared for his father in his hours of suffering. During his last illness he was assisted by the only surviving sister, Mrs. Martha Hildreth and her daughter, Mrs. Nettie Peters of Chittenango. Mr. Hoffman would have rounded out four score years in January. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p. m, at the home and at 2 p. m. at the M. E. Church on Friday, September 24.
