Charles Getman, While Homeward Bound at Noon from his Employment at the Clark Machine Works, was Struck by Milk Train and Dies Within a Few Minutes.
Special to the Recorder
St. Johnsville, April 7- Charles Getman, aged 35 years, an employee of the Clark Machine company, was killed at noon today while crossing the Central track in front of the company's plant in this village by being struck by a milk train. Mr. Getman lived only a few minutes after being hit. His body was not badly mutilated. His wife and several children survive.
In view of the fact that there is no coroner in the western part of the county, Dr. Vedder assumed charge of the remains pending instructions from Coroner Murphy of Amsterdam.- Newspaper Article (St Johnsville News [what paper?] NY, Wednesday, April 12, 1911)
A most distressing accident occurred at noon Friday, at the Central railroad crossing, at the Clark Machine works. This is a private crossing, giving access to the machine works, and to the Shafler property, between the railroad and the river, and is much used by people going to and from the Central passenger station. The only other outlet is over the Central Railroad property at the Bridge street overhead crossing. As the employes of the machine works were going to dinner, west bound train No. 30 came along, being it is said, a little late. Several of the men were on the track, but all got out of the way, excepting Charles Getman, who was struck and died without recovering consciousness, in about 20 minutes. The body was removed by Undertaker Clark Youngs of Canajoharie to the home of Mrs. Getman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Weaver (sic) [Weber], at Stone Arabia. Mr Getman, who was 34 years of age, is survived by his widow and two young sons, his mother, Mrs. Sarah Getman, one sister, Mrs. Raymond Bellinger, and a nephew, Kenneth Abel, all of St. Johnsville. The funeral was held from the home of Mr. Weaver (sic) [Weber] Tuesday at 12 o'clock, and at 1 o'clock from the Stone Arabia Lutheran church, the Rev. L. B. Dutcher officiating. Interment was made at Ephratah.
