ILION, July 27.—Mrs. Fannie W. Snell, 79, of 38 North Third Street, died July 25, 1944, at the Ilion Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Nelliston, daughter of Caleb and Mary Lasher Waterman. She was married to Edward Snell in Buel. He died 15 years ago. She had lived in Ilion for the past 18 years.
Mrs. Snell was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Glen Chesebrough, Ilion; a son, R. E. Snell, Boston; three sisters, Mrs. F. B. Cady, Ilion; Mrs. Olive Bauder, Syracuse, and Mrs. Clarence Heslan, Amsterdam; several nieces and nephews.
Tbe funeral was held at the Applegate funeral home and burial was in Armory Hill Cemetery.

Edward Snell of Johnstown died at the home of John McLaughlin, town of Ephratah, Tuesday morning. Mr. Snell was born Dec. 21, 1855. He is survived by his wife, Fannie, of Fort Plain; one son Reuben of Glen Dale, Mass.; one daugter, Alice Cheesebourough of Ilion, and one brother, George of Ephratah. The funeral was held today at Gloversville. Rev. C. M. Sturgess officiated. The remains will be interred in the family plot in the Fort Plain cemetery.

Ira Waterman aged forty-nine year, died Sunday morning at the New Grant hotel in Port Plain as the result of injuries sustained when he fell down stairs at that hostelry, Friday night. Following the accident the unfortunate man did not recover consciousness.
Mr. Waterman Was born in Nelliston and had resided here practically all his life. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Waterman and is survived by his wife and one son, Chester, both of Canajoharie; five sisters, Mrs. Fanny Snell of Fort Plain, Mrs. Joseph Bierman and Miss Beth Waterman of Frankfort, Mrs. R. D. Bauder of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Clarence Heslan ot Amsterdam: also two brothers, Eugene Waterman of Johnstown and George Waterman of Nelliston.
The remains were taken to the home of his wife at Canajoharie, where the funeral will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon at 2:30. Interment will be made at Canajoharie Falls.

The death of Mrs. Bertha Helen Bierman of 1201 Park avenue, which occurred this morning, will bring sorrow to many in Utica, Frankfort and Fort Plain where she spent the earlier years of her life. Mrs. Bierman had been ill health for many Months and her condition fook a grave turn one week ago.
Mrs. Bierman was the daughter of the late Caleb and Mary Lashcr Waterman. She was born in Nelliston, July 1, 1872, where she resided until her marriage, at which time she moved to Frankfort, where most of her life wss spent. Four years ago she moved to Utica where she has since made her home.
Mrs. Bierman is survived by one daughter, E. Kathryn, of this city and by four sisters and two brothers. Mrs. 01ive Bauder of Baldwinsville. Mrs. Clarence Heslan of Amsterdam. Mrs. Fannie Snell of Fort Plain. Mrs. Fred Cady of Ilion, Eugene Waterman of Johnstown and George Waterman of Fort Plain.
The death of Mrs. Bierman closes the life of one whose works of charity and kindness have made a lasting impression upon those who enjoyed her acquaintance. In profession a nurse, Mrs. Bierman was ever ready to heed the call of those who were in need.
Her many good works will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

Canajoharie, Aug, 16 - Joseph H. bierman, a native, an until a few years ago a resident ofg this village met with an accident on Saturday afternoon that has resulted in the loss of his right arm at the sholder. Mr. Bierman has for several years, been employed on the West Shore railroad as a brakemen, and on Saturday was at work in the yards at Frankfort when in some way the trucks of the train caused trouble and a car struck his arm with such terriffic force as to horribly smash it. James Cob of Utica, another brakeman, was also slightly injured in the accident. Mr. Bierman was removed to St. Luke's hospital at Utica, where Dr. Fred W. smith amputated the injured arem close to the sholder, and latest reports are that he will recover. Bierman is married, with a child, living in Utica, while his mother and brother, George, reside in this village.

Mrs. Ethel Mae Heslan, 79, widow of Clarence Heslan, former commissioner of public works of Amsterdam, died suddenly this morning at 8:45 o'clock at her home, 252 Guy Park Ave. Although she had been in declining health for some time, her death was unexpected.
Mrs. Heslan was born at Nelliston June 20, 1879, a daughter of Caleb and Mary Catherine Lasher Waterman, and lived in Nelliston and Fort Plain until she came to Amsterdam more than 60 years ago. In her early years, she was employed by the Blood and Barnes Knitting Co.
Mrs. Heslan was a member ol St. Ann's Episcopal Church. She was married May 31. 1906, in St. Ann's rectory by the late Dr. Edward T. Carroll to Mr. Heslan who died in 1945.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Pat Sala. Mrs. Leo Winkle. Miss Marian Heslan and Mrs. Stanley Senko. Amsterdam; one son, Edward Heslan. also of Amsterdam: one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Cady, Syracuse; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence Heslan, 44 Union Street, former commissioner of public works of the City of Amsterdam, died Monday night at 9:10 o'clock in St. Mary's Hospital, aged 62 years. While his health had not been good for some time, he had
been a hospital patient only a few hours when death occurred.
Mr. Heslan was born in Amsterdam May 28. 1883, a son of John and Helen Allen Heslan, and spent practically all his life in this city. He was a bricklayer by trade and was employed by various local contractors for many years. When Arthur Carter was elected mayor of Amsterdam, he appointed Mr. Heslan commissioner of public works, a position he held all through Mayor Carter's administration, a period of 10 years. His duties were performed with a quiet efficiency that reflected his modest, unassuming nature and he seldom identified himself with any interests outside of his home and work. Mr. Heslan was well liked by his associates and made a host of friends during his long residence here. He was a member of St. Ann's Church and of the Mason's Union.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ethel Watermann whom he married In this city in 1906; four daughters, Mrs. P. Sala, Mrs. Leon Winkle, Marion and Eleanor Heslan; one son, Edward; a brother, John; two grandchildren, Robert and Mary Jane Winkle, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, all of Amsterdam.- Funeral Announcement (Evening Recorder, Amsterdam, NY, Friday, September 21, 1945)
The funeral of Clarence Heslan was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home. 44 Union Street, and 2:30 o'clock In St. Ann's Church, the Rev. William D. Orr officiating.
The organist, Reginald Harris, played a program which included "Elegy", "Massenet". "Dead March" from "Saul", Handel. "Largo", Verdi. "O.Rest In the Lord", from "Elijah", Mendelssohn, "For All the Saints", Barnby, and "Funeral March", Chopin.
Among the floral tributes were pieces from the Montgomery County Democratic Committee, employes of the Department of Public Works storehouse, employes of the Amsterdam Printing Company, Montgomery County Women's Democratic Club, employes at City Hall, St. Ann's Mothers' Society. St. Ann's Men's Club, employes of the Vollmer Transportation Company, boys at the Crown news store, Bacmo-Postman girls and neighbors.
The bearers were Joseph Fitzgibbons, Earl McGrattan, Edward J. McCarthy, Francis M. Coessens, Louis Coessens and Thomas F. Breslin. Interment was in Green Hill Cemetery.

Miss Norma E. Heslan. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Heslan, -4 Union Street, was married to Staff Sergeant Pat Sala, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sala, 302 West Main Street, Monday afternoon in the rectory of St. Michael's Church by the Rev. Joseph C. Beck. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Winkle, brother-in-law and sister of the bride, were the attendants.
The bride wore an aqua gabadine suit with brown accessories and an orchid corsage. The matron of honor wore a brown and pink silk suit with brown, accessories and a corsage of Better Times roses and white pompons.
Mrs. Heslan, mother of the bride, was dressed in brown and the bridegroom's mother wore navy blue. Their corsages were of gladioli tips and roses.
A receptionu for the immediate families was held at the home of the bride's parents, and Sergeant and Mrs. Sala left for a northern wedding trip.

Philomena "Lena" Spagnola Heslan passed away peacefully on January 23, 2013. She was a resident of River Ridge Living Center. Born on November 16, 1912, Lena recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
The eldest daughter of the late Antimo and Elvina Spagnola, Lena worked at Fownes Brothers for many years. She was a glove maker and then became a supervisor. On May 12, 1952, she married Edward J. Heslan who passed away on December 30, 1979.
Lena will be remembered for the beauty and grace she carried within her every day. She was always ready for a good card game, a cross country trip to Las Vegas to see Tom Jones, and spending time with her family and friends. Lena loved children and treated each child as if they were her own, especially her nieces and nephews. The memories with those she loved will be forever in our hearts.
Survivors include her sisters, Olga Cisaretti and Jean Sheckton, both of Amsterdam. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Lena was preceded in death by her brothers, Louie Spagnola, Angelo Spagnola, and Reynold Spagnola, and her sisters, Pat Cataffo, Elizabeth "Teddy" Gaetano, and Evelyn Zumbolo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday (Today), 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main St., Amsterdam, N.Y. A private interment will be held at St. Michael's Cemetery.

ST JOHNSVILLE - On a bright Spring afternoon, that of Monday the earthly life of Mrs. Anna Goodbread Wagner, 73, drew to a peaceful close. She was taken ill only a little over a week ago, and was confined to her bed only since a week ago yesterday.
Anna Goodbread was born in Stone Arabia on September 12 1861, daughter of the late Daniel and Delia Getman Goodbread. She spent her girlhood days there, and was educated in the schools of that place. She always resided in this section. Deceased was twice married, her second husband, William Wagner, a local barber, having died several years ago.
For the past six years, Mrs. Wagner has made her home with Mrs. Bertha Weir and Ralph Weir. She never was happier than when doing some act of kindness for someone else. Her genial disposition won and kept for her a legion of friends, who will regret to learn of her passing.
Surviving are one son by a previous marriage, Orville Ecker, Syracuse, now confined in an Oneida hospital with critical injuries sustained last Wednesday while driving to the bedside of his mother; two stepsons, Floyd Wagner of Fort Plain and Clyde Wagner of the state of Washington; a brother, John Goodbread, Amsterdam; also grandsons and granddaughters and nieces and nephews.

FORT PLAIN. March 25. - Mrs. Catherine Birk. aged 66 years, wife of Willis Birk of Nelllston, died at her home in that village Monday morning after an illness of about ten days of a complication of diseases. Mrs. Blrk was born In the town of Palatine September 7, 1864, the daughter of the late Daniel and Delia Getman Goodbread, and had been a resident of Nelliston for many years. She had a wide circle of friends, by whom she will be greatly missed. She was a member of the First Methodist church of Nelllston.
Besides her husband she is survlved by two sons, Lewis Birk of Troy and Harry E. Birk of Nelliston: one daughter, Mrs. edward Hambrecht of Palatine Bridge: three grandchildren. Margaret Birk of Troy, Paul Birk of Nelllston and Doris E. Hambrecht of Palatine Bridge, also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. W. D. Worman, pastor of St Paul's Lutheran church of Fort Plain, officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Plain cemetery.

Willis Birk, 75, died Monday night at his home in Nelliston. Death followed a long illness.
Mr. Blrk was born in the Town of Palatine December 9, 1861, a son of Lewis and Lany Reals Birk. All his life had been spent in this section. He was a blacksmith by trade and did much of the special iron work on the Van Hornesvllle School.
Surviving relatives are one daughter, Mrs. Edward Hambrecht, Canajoharie; two sons, Lewis, Fort Plain, and Harry, Nelliston; three great grandchildren and one sister, Miss Mary Birk, Amsterdam.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the home in Nelliston. The Rev. H. H. Mahl, pastor of the Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be made in Fort Plain Cemetery.

John Goodbread, 82. who for much of his life was a farmer at Indian Castle, died Friday morning in Little Falls Hospital. Mr. Goodbread had been in comparatively fair health until he was taken ill Thursday night and was removed to the hospital.
He had made his home for the past four years with his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Waite, Little Falls.
Mr. Goodbread was born in Stone Arabia on March 24, 1866. a son of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Goodbread. While residing most of his life at Indian Castle, he also spent several years in Amsterdam.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Rita Greiner. Newport, Mrs. Lucille Haberman. Elttle Falls, Mrs. Olive Conrad. Amsterdam, and Mrs. Zelda Waite. Little Falls; three sons; Frank, Amsterdam, Ward, Mindenville, and James, Little Falls; also several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Waite home in Little Falls. The Rev. Howard B. Gilman, pastor of St. Paul's Universalist Church, will officiate and burial will be made in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Clark Goodbread, aged 20 years, was drowned while trying to swim across the Barge Canal at Mdndenville Sunday afternoon in company with Leo and Ralph Van SJyke. Young Goodbread who was not a good swimmer, became frightened when nearly in the middle of the river and started to return to the shore, when one of the Van Slyke brothers went to his aseistance.
Goodbread seized him around the neck and nearly pulled him down with him but let go and sank.
Coroner Simons was called on case. He is survived by his father, John Goodbread with whom he resided on the Clarence Crouse farm at Mindenville, three brothers, James, Frank and Ward and four sisters, Olive, Rita, Lucile and Zelda. The funeral was held today at 11 a. m. at the home with the Rev. Dr. B. E. Fake of St. Paul's Lutheran church officiating.

Zelda Waite, 75, of Rockton Plaza, Little Falls, died Dec. 2, in Little Falls Hospital, where she had been a patient since Nov. 2.
Born in Indian Castle on May 18,1911, she was the daughter of John and Iva Suits Goodbread. She was married to Arthur L. Waite on Oct. 12, 1935. He died Oct. 24, 1979.
She was employed for several years as a clerk in various stores including F.W. Woolworth, Trask's and the Boston Store, retiring eight years ago. She was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include a brother, James Goodbread, Little Falls; two sisters, Lucille Haberman, Little Falls, Olive Conrad, Amsterdam; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 5, at 11 a.m., from the Maginnis-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Fletcher, pastor of the United Methodist Church, St. Johnsville, officiating. Burial was made in Hagaman Cemetery.

St Johnsville ... Irving Reid Goodbred, 44. of Mindenville, died Tuesday night in Little Falls hospital, soon after being admitted. Mr. Goodbred had been in failing health for some time, and about a week ago was stricken with influenza. Wfhen his condition became critical, he was transferred to the hospital, but lived only about half an hour.
Born in the Town of Danube January 18, 1899, he was the son of the late Uriah Goodbread, and Margaret Suits Goodbred. He spent, most of his life in Mindenville, Town of Minden, where he was a farmer.
Surviving besides his mother, are teo sisters. Mrs. Millard Sheldon and Mrs. Glen Thorpe, both of Mindenville. He never married.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 at the home withRev. Albert B. Hotchkiss, formaer pastor of Grace Congregational Chrisian church, officiating. The body will be placed in the vault for burial in the spring in Prospect View Cemetery here.

Born in Mindenvilie, March 6, 1903, she was the daughter of Uriah and Margaret Suits Goodbred. She was married to Glen Thorpe, who died in 1976.
She had resided her entire life in Mindenvilie. For several years she owned and operated the White Cabin Restaurant there.
She was a member of St. John's Reformed Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Millard (Nellie) Sheldon and a greatnephew, Stanley Sheldon, both of Mindenvilie, and several cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the C. Curtis Lull Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Vandegriessen, pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring

Glen J. Thorpe, 78, who resided near Mindenville, died Tuesday afternoon in Little Falls Hospital, where he had been a patient one day. He was removed to the hospital by SAVAC on Monday, after suffering a heart attack in his home.
Born in Little Falls on Sept. 1, 1897, he was the sun of Benjamin and Nellie Van Etten Thorpe. He was married to Ada Goodbread on April 9,1932 and she survives.
He was a graduate of Little Falls High School and had been employed for more than 20 years on Lock 16 of the New York State Barge Canal at Mindenville prior to his retirement a number of years ago.
Survivors in addition to the widow include a brother, Robert Thorpe, Rochester: two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Klock and Mrs. Gertrude Goodbread, both of Little Falls.
Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. from the C. Curtis Lull Funeral Home, St. Johnsville, with the Rev. Robert Gram, pastor of St. John's Reformed Church, officiating. Interment will be made in St. Johnsville Cemetery at a later date.

FORT PLAIN, April 10 — George H. Billington. aged 63 years, a well known resident of Nelliston, died Sunday noon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Melick. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Mr. Billington was an engineer by profession. He was a son of the lata Josish and Margaret Duesler Billington and was born in the town of Palatine and spent practically his entire life in the vicinity where he died. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs, Meliek and Mrs. Harold Lampman; one brother, Oliver Billington, and a sister, Mrs. Peter Beck, all of Nelliston. The funeral will be held at the home of Mrs. Meliek Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. the Rev. Leon Davis, pastor of the Baptist. church officiating. Interment will be made is the Fort Plain cemetery.
