Marriage Notes for Barbara Eliza Hatmaker and Clarence Herbert Smith

 - 50th Anniversary (Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, NY, Sunday, November 28, 1926)
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence H. Smith of No. 133 Clinton avenue south, today will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. The celebration has a double significance, because November 28th in 1875, was Thanksgiving Day too, and it was that festival time of the nation that Miss Barbara Hatmaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mannasseh Hatmaker of Gloversville, cholse as her wedding day.
Ever since their marriage, the couple has traveled a great deal. Mr. Smith has crossed the Atlantic Ocean twenty-four times, on eight of these occasions being accompanied by his wife. He has been in every state in this county, with the exception of Nevada, from whose borders he was only siz miles away, and Mrs. Smith has been with him while he motored in twenty-two of them.
When they were first married, Mr. and Mrs. Smith went to New York City, where Mr. Smith was engaged in his profession of photography which he has followed ever since that time with but one interval. They soon moved to detroit, and later Mr. Smith became connected with the Eastman Kodack Company sales department, which brouth him to Rochester. In 1900 he traveled 56,00 miles for that concer. Resigning from the company, he bought an interest in the Smith-Curry studios and in the next year bought out the interest of Mr. Curry.
Mr. Smith has had three special fields of activity outside of his business hours. In his early days he was a famous bicicle rider, holding the all-around amateur championship of Michigan. And he is said to be the third person in the world to learn to ride the uni-cycle. In connnection with this hobby, he condusted a party through Europe in 1894, the first American party to tour Europe on bicycles. Since that time he has arranged many parties to that continent.
Mr. Smith is a Master Mason, charter member of Zetland Lodge, a member of Hamilton Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Doric Council, Royal and Select Masters; Cyrene Commandry; Kniths Templar, Lalla Rookh Grotto and the Royal Order of Jesters.
Mr. and Mr. Smith hve one child Grace, who is the wife of Willard J. smith, of Trafalgar street, three grandsons and one grandaughter.

14521. Georgia Smith

 - GFG - A
 - Newspaper Article (Richester Democrat and Chronicle, NY, Monday, January 30, 1911)
Without having returned to concousness after her collapse following the taking of a quantity of carbolic acid, Miss Georgia Smith died at 3:25 o'clock yesterday morning at the Hotel Seneca. She was attended by three physiciansnone of whom gave any assurances of saving her life after antidotes administered almost immediately failed to counteract the work of the poison.
Ther is no reason to doubt that the theory advanced by Clarence H. Smith, that his daughter was temporarily insane is correct. Her gayety and apparent enjoyment of life during the earlier part of the evening are thoughtto have been forced by a mind sharpened by the cunning of the mentaily -----.
It is the opinion of those who have been concerned in the case that the poison had been in possession of Miss Smith but a few hours prior to the tragedy. An ounce of the acid was taken, as is apparent from the fact that a two-ounce bottle was found half-filled in the hotel dressing room.
Dr. W. Franklin Bork, of No 70 Clinton avenue south: Dr. Frederick W. Zimmer, of No. 43 Monroe avenue, and Dr. A. R. Fritz, house physician of the Seneca, worked for several hours over the unconcious woman, administering restoratives and antidotes for the poison. They failed however to revive her for an instant.
Owing to a mistake in the information obtained Saturday night and published in the Democrat and Chronicle yesterday, it was stated that Fred Minges was acting as escort to Miss Smith. The name should have been J. Walter Minges.
The remains were taken early yesterday morning to the family home at No. 24 Normandy avenue. Coroner Killip (?) granted a certificate of death.

 - Obituary (The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Thursday, March 20, 1924)
The charm of personality was particularly well developed in the lifetime of Asa B. Bellis, prominnent and well known Gloversvillian, whose final call came to him yesterday. Few men had acquired it to the extent, that Asa Bellis had and hundreds of persons throughout the United States will learn of his passing with genuine sorrow and sadness.
Mr. Bellis had long been active and prominent in the leather and glove industry. It can be safely said that no other man was better known at home or abroad. Originally a Johnstownian under the widely known firm of Bellis & Ball, and later the local head of the Surpass Leather company, the subject of this sketch added greatly to his prestige and his aiready high standing when he became associated with August Klein in the leather and findings portion of the leather and glove business. His splendid personality coupled with the ability and genialty of "Gus" Klein formed a business combination that was hard to beat.
A call at the business offices of Messrs. Bellis and Klein was marked as incomplete without a visit with these two men. It is indeed a coincidnce that both of these men should be laid low and confined to their respective homes at the same time. Hundreds of visitors to the Fulton County glove market never visit either Gloversville or Johnstown without shaking hands with "Asa" Bellis and "Gus" Klein and without spending a few hours and day beneath the radiance of their wonderful good nature and always kindly disposition. To see "Asa" and "Gus" was a privilege all craved and a visit to the American glove market without having seen these two men was similar to having seen Shakespeare without Hamlet.
The warehouse in Cayadutta street will never be the same without one or both—largely due to the wonderful personality of each. Asa Bellis had many friends—scattered here and there throughout the American Glove trade and his generous whole-souled spirit and splendid personality will he kindly recalled for many years to come—after both will have folded their hands and laid down to their last long sleep.

14537. Arthur Fox

 - GFG - A

 - Obituary (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, NY, Saturday, June 10, 1911)
After a lingering illness, from which there appeared to be no hope of recovery, Arthur Fox, a well known young man of Gloversville, who had many acquaintences in amsterdam, died at 3:45 o'clock Friday afternoon.
While playing with the "Queen of Bohemia" company at Milwaukee, Wis., early last-December he contracted a severe cold which soon compelled him to return to his home in Gloversville, where he had since remained. His condition at that time had become weakened and It soon became evident that his ailment had become so deepseated that it was doubtful if it could be shaken off. Despite the best of medical care and nursing, Mr. Fox continued to fail gradually until the end.
"Art" Fox early in life showed an aptitude for the stage. He took part in many entertainments, being a clever dancer and singer, and it was not surprising that he should have gained a place on the professional stage early in life. As a member of the Echo Singing Four, honoured the country, visiting many places of importance and making good everywhere. He later became connected with the "Queen of Bohemia" company, with which he was filling an engagement when compelled by the state of his health to return to his home in this city.
He was born in Gloversville, being a son of Earl and Dora Fox. The deceased was 27 years of age. He was an affable, agreeable young fellow, making friends wherever he went, and there will be sincere regret and sorrow among his wide circle of friends that his life should have been cut off in his young manhood. He was a member of the Hiawatha Social club and was well liked and popular among all who knew him.
Mr. Fox is survived by his widow; his mother, Mrs. Dora Fox, and one brother. Roscoe Fox. of Gloversville.
The funeral will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, and will be private to all but-relatives and immediate friends. Interment at Prospect Hill.
