- Newspaper Article (Jefferson County Journal, Adams, NY, May 24, 1916)
Ernest Robert Getman, the five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Getman, living about a mile from Antwerp, received injuries by falling into the Indian river Saturday morning that will probably result in his death. Dr. F. H. Hutohins, who is attending him, holds out little hope for the child's recovery.
Ernest and his brother, Franklin, aged seven years, were riding at 7 o'clock this morning on a wagon driven by John Fuller. When they had reached the Copley saw mill the two children got off and Mr. Fuller drove on. The two children were playing about the mill, when the older boy missed his younger brother. On looking about, he found that the boy had fallen into the river on the water wheel. He immediately started out for his home, which was a mile and a half distant. On reaching there he summoned his mother, who started for the mill, on a run.
Mrs. Getman gave out when she had reached about half of the distance, having reached the home of Fred Dobson. She told Mr. Dobson of her son's plight and he secured his automobile and rushed with her and the boy to the scene of the accident. When they arrived at the mill Mrs, Getman did not wait for the machine to stop, jumping out and springing into the water where the boy lay on the wheel.
She carried him out, placed him in the car and they sped on into the village, where they took the child to the hotel and Dr. Hutchins was summoned. Dr. Hutchins said there was no Water in the boy's lungs, but said that he feared that the child had suffered a concussion of the brain. He said that he would probably live through the afternoon, but gave out no hopes for his recovery.
A later report stated that the child had died at 2:30 Saturday afternoon
