 - Funeral (Rome Daily Citizen, NY, Feburary 13, 1895)
The funeral services of Rev. John W. Roberts were held today. There was a prayer at the residence, 114 West Thomas street at 10:30 A. M., and at 11 o'clock services took place in the First M. E. Church. There was a large attendance, testifying to the esteem and love which the friends and acquaintances of the deceased had for him. The remains were inclosed in a plain black casket with oxidised silver handles. On the casket was a floral wreath and a sheaf of wheat
The platform was occupied by Rev. D. F. Pierce, pastor of the church, Rev. H. E. Waugh of Utica, presiding elder of the Utica district of the M. E. Church, Rev. Dr. Peabody of the Baptist Church, Rome, Rev. C. E. Miller of the Liberty street M. E. Church, Rome, Rev. J. W. Hancock of the M. E. Church of Lee Center, Rev. Mr. Ferguson of the Centenary M. E. Church, Utica, and Rev. Mr. Palmer of the South Street M. E. Church, Utica.
The services were opened with the singing of hymn 982, "How Blessed are the Righteous When They Die," by a choir composed of R. A. Putnam, W. E. Ninde, Mrs. D. L. Ketcham jr., Mrs. D. F. Pierce and Mrs. C. F. Richards. Miss Jessie Stewart presided at the organ. Presiding Elder Waugh read a passage of Scripture. Rev. Mr. Miller offered prayer. Hymn 979, "Asleep in Jesus," was sung.
Rev. Mr. Pierce read notes of regret from the following clergymen, who were unable to be present: Rev. J. H. Lamb, Rev. Dr. Taylor of the Presbyterian Church of Rome, Rev. Erasmus Jones of Utica, Rev. Dr. Webster of Rochester.
The ministers present who had known Mr. Roberts made remarks in eulogy of him, paying him the highest tributes of respect, love and esteem.
Dr. Peabody said that he had delighted to call the deceased a friend. It was pleasure to meet him. He had an interest in the kingdom of God in every church. He was a man of tact, of Christian grace and delicacy; a good, sweet, kindly tender man. He exemplified the truth that the only love that is enduring is in the Christian life.
Rev. Mr. Miller said among other things that Mr. Roberts was a good man, full of faith and of the Holy Ghost. He was a gentle man and he had a fatherly interest in the welfare of the church and its people. His life was a product of the gospel and was an example for all.
Rev. Mr. Ferguson indorsed all the good words that had been said of Mr. Roberts and expressed the wish that he had language to speak in even higher and better terms. He was full of cheer and had an evenly balanced mind. The deceased made a lasting impression on the people among Whom he lived. He was a Bible Christian in the best and truest sense of the word.
Presiding Elder Waugh spoke of the kindness and the encouragement shown by Mr. Roberts to young ministers and alluded to his own personal experience with the deceased. He was very loyal to the church and would be greatly missed. The speaker hoped the mantle of the deceased would fall on other ministers, of the church.
Rev. Mr. Pierce spoke very feelingly of the deceased. His voice was husky with the emotion that he felt and [h]is eyes filled with tears. Many of those in attendance were greatly affected. Mr. Pierce said that it seemed as though his place was among the mourners. He spoke of his love for Mr. Roberts and of his great helpfulness in church work. He gave good advice at all times. He was a great aid to the pastor. His marked characteristic was faithfulness in the church. He was always in his pew at the morning and evening service and was a constant attendant at the prayer meeting. He was a youthful man and was helpful to the young people. He was interested in their work. Mr. Pierce read the record of Mr. Roberts's life and concluded by speaking words of comfort to the mourning relatives.
The choir sang the hymn beginning "Servant of God, Well Done.'' The committal service was read by Rev. Messrs. Pierce, Palmer and Waugh, after which opportunity to view the remains was given.
The remains were deposited in the vault. The bearers were Earl S. Batcheller, L. H. Baker, Dr. Edwin Evans, F. B. Beers, A. W. Honsinger and M. F. Salsbury. Among the relatives from out of town were Charles W. Roberts of Brooklyn, son of the deceased, Mr. Ryder of West Hoboken, N.J., Mrs. Beadle of Waltham, Mass., Rev. C. W.
