 - Obituary (Daily Sentinel Rome, NY, Wednesday, July 22, 1931)
John N. Carlisle, 64, one of New York State's best known utilities leaders, passed away at Watertown last night shortly after 10 o'clock following an illness of several months. He was stricken April 16 while at the Hotel Ten Eyck at Albany and some days later was removed from a hospital in that city to Watertown by special train.
John Nelson Carlisle was born August 24, 1866, at Preble, Cortland County, son of William S. and Catherine Rose Burdick Carlisle. His family soon moved to Watertown where he was educated, graduating from the high school in 1884 and immediately entering the study of law in the office of Judge Henry Purcell. After being admitted to the bar in 1889, he formed a partnership with Judge Purcell. In 1902 he was admitted to practice in United States courts. He was city attorney in Watertown, 1891-92; member of the Board of Education there, 1901-04, and then public Service commissioner for the second district, 1910-12.
He formed other law partnerships, first with Francis M. Hugo, former secretary of state; Senator Elon R. Brown, and finally with his brother, Floyd L. When Floyd retired to engage in finance the firm of Carlisle - Carlisle was discontinued.
As a young man, Mr. Carlisle was active in politics. In 1888, while Robert Lansing, later wartime secretary of state under President Wilson, was Democratic county chairman, Mr. Carlisle organized youthful members of the party into an Independent committee to aid the county organization in its work. He was elected to the county committee and became its chairman. In 1896 he was made Democratic state committeeman for the 35th congressional district and for six years was secretary of the state body.
With Daniel G. Griffin, he was instrumental in effecting the nomination of Roswell P. Flower for governor, taking a prominent part in the campaign that elected Flower.
Appointed state highways commissioner in 1913 and serving until 1915. Mr. Carlisle took office with the understanding that he would be permitted to form an advisory board of engineers to formulate a definite policy for the department. Under his guidance the whole department was reorganised. After leaving this office he was advisor to the state commissioner of highways in 1915.
While he was highway commissioner he completed a system of roads throughout the North Country, promoted the scenic boulevard about Storm King, and uncovered the famous "gravel contract" under which the state expended thousands of dollars for "special gravel" claimed necessary for certain road work.
In 1915 the law firm of Ainsworth, Carlisle & Sullivan was formed in Albany and during the next five years he practiced there and in Watertown. In 1919 he was employed by the Albany Common Council to investigate city affairs.
When Floyd L. Carlisle, his brother, and his associates in the Black River Valley power group took over the Northern New York Utilities, Inc., In 1920, they chose John N. Carlisle to head the great hydro-electric corporation. He continued in that office until it was taken over by the Niagara Hudson and even then continued his services.
He also became president of the Power Corporation of New York and was a director of the Mohawk Hudson Power Corporation, the Northeastern Power Corporation, St. Regis Paper Company, and the Northern New York Trust Company. He was a commissioner of the Black River Regulating District Board, promoting water storage for that valley.
From 1909 to 1915 he was a trustee of Cornell University, 1909- 1915. For 15 years he was member of the New York National Guard, 1895-1910. He retired as a major.
He was a member of the American, State, and Jefferson County Bar Association, Black River Valley and Jefferson County golf clubs of Watertown, Fort Orange Club of Albany, Teugega Country  Club of Rome, Thousand Island Country Club of Alexandria Bay and Masonic organizations.
He married Miss Carrie C. Brown of Pulaski. Their only child, Catherine, who married Frederick H. Taylor, grandson of the late Governor Flower, died in 1923.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the Carlisle home. Burial will be in Brookside cemetery.

 - Obituary (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, NY, December, no date 1909)
St. Johnsvllle. Dec. 14.—The funeral of Chauncey Wilson, who died at the Montgomery county home. Saturday, was held at the residence of his family, on Bridge street, yesterday, the Rev. H. C. Rockwell officiating, the interment being in the village cemetery.
Mr. Wilson, who was about 65 years of age, was formerly a prominent resident of Oppenhelm, Fulton county, residing on a farm which he owned just north of the Youkers Bush church. Some years ago he removed to
this village and engaged in the clothing business. In politics he was an active Democrat, and he obtained the position of loan commissioner for the county. Business reverses overtook him. and at an age when a man should be in a position to think of spending his old age in circumstances of ease and comfort, he found himself thrown entirely upon his own exertions. Business difficulties became complicated with family matters later on, leading to greatly deprecated estrangements. Mr. Wilson for a time had a position in the local office of Roth & Engelhardt, and afterward in Ferguson's clothing store. He also traveled for a liquor firm and acted as a book canvaser. Finally he retired to the residence of his brother, the late Amos Wilson, north of S t . Johnsvllle. On the death of the latter, Mr. Wilson retired to the county home. He is survived by his widow, his son Bion, and daughter, Leila, and a sister, Mrs. Snell, all of whom reside in St. Johnsvllle.
