 - Newspaper Article (The Albany Evening Journal, NY, Wednesday, December 3, 1902)
Chicago Dec 2—A thorough investigation of genealogical records in Herkimer county. N. Y., and covering a considerable length of the Mohawk valley appears to have accorded to a Chicago wornan, Mrs. Estella Folts Callan, the honor of being the foremost Daughter of the American Revolution. Her claim has been, recognized. It is said, by the government genealogist, the D. A. R., and the Daughters of Founders and Patriots.
The Daughters of Founders and Patriots, by the way, is the most exclusive of the revolutionary war organizations. Only those, whose paternal ancesters settled in America between 1608 and 1667 and were loyal citizens, can Join the D, of F. and P.
Mrs. Callan has spent a decade in establishing herself as the foremost Daughter of the American Revolution. She is the wife of Frank D. Callan, a prominent real estate man.
One of the reasons she gives for having expended as much time and money in estblishing her claim is that she wanted to have an honor to which she felt confident she was entitled brought to Chicago. She wanted to show New Yorks "400" that the women of the "Windy City" have pedigrees, as well as money, to burn.
In straightening out her distinguished ancestry, Mrs. Callan visited the family home in Herkimer county, New York. She searched through old, musty church records and the archives of the county. She rummaged about in the attics of dilapidated colonial homes, spent weeks and months in libraries, mined ancient letters and bookd from dusty chests, and waded through the files of faded newspapers. It was a trying task, but Mrs. Callan accomplished ... undertaing ... of war history and romance which .... her for her trouble.
After she had finally place the whole historical family quilt together, here is what she found.
That her known lelatives number ... persons.
That she had nineteen ancestors who fought in the War of the Revolution.
That one branch of her family has occupied the Folts of volts homestead in Herkimer couney for 192 years.
Rhe first thing Mrs. Callan had to do to establish her claim to being a genuine descendant of the founders and patriots was to prove her lineage in the paternal line, This was not difficult to do. Her family, the Folts or Volts, has lived in one house continually for 192 years, and in the attic of the old mandion she found subsantial proofs of her claims.
Accoring to the records, the Volts family came to Ameratic in the early part of the seventh century and settled in lower New York. There all the family lived until 1711, when Melchert Folts and a company of neighbors, migrated to the Mohawk valley. Besides Folts, the Herkimers and Schumakers - now Shoemakers - and a number of others were in teh company. They received a grant of the entire valley from the King of England and began laying out their farms and building homes and churches.
The records of Herkimer county were carefully preserved by the settlers and Mrs. Callan scoured the original copies of the wills of every succeeding Folts ancester form Melchert Folts to her grandfather, Daniel Folts. Melchert Folts was born in 1670 [?] and died in 1731 [?]
The ancestor next in linie was Jacob Folts, who was born in 1711 and died in ... . During the revolutionary war he was a lieutenant. His son, conrad Folts, born in 1747, was a revolutionary captain and was wounded four times at the battle of Oriskany, N. Y. His son the great-grandfatehr of Mrs. Callan, was Warner Folts, who was born in 1776 and lived until 1837. Daniel Folts, son of Warner Folts, was born in 1794 [?] and lived for -- years. Warner Folts, the second of the name, the father of Mrs. Callan, was a son of Daniel.
Through Marriage the Folts family ... became related to every one of the original families of the valley. This accounts for the large number of ancestors having revolutionay war records.
  .....
The society to which they belong is only about three years old. it is distinct from the Daughters of the American Revolution, although it is in fact an outgrowh of that order. As a member of the daughters of the American Revolution Mrs. Callan wears the insignia of the society - gold bars bearing the name of the ancestor or ancestors from which the member is descended. Mrs. Callan is entitled to wear ninteen bars, a greater number than any other woman.

Native of Frankfort.
MOST REMARKABLE DAUGHTER OF
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
Mrs. Estella Folts Callan of Chicago Who Was Born in Frankfort Lays Claim to an American Descent That Goes Back Nine Generations.
A recent Philadelphia paper contains a most interesting article regarding Mrs. Estelle Folts Callan daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warner Folts of East Frankfort. The article is embellished with pictures of Mrs. Callan, the Folts homestead which has been occupied by her ancestors for nearly 200 years and the old stone church at Fort Herkimer. From the article we clip the following:
The most remarkable Daughter of the Revolution is Mrs. Estelle Folts Callan, who lays claim to an American descent that goes back for nine generations, and who boasts the possession of 920 kinsfolk.
Mrs. Callan belongs neither to New York's "400" nor Philadelphia's "Quaker Quality." She is a Chicago woman and she wears twenty gold bars in her D. A. R, insignia, and she has the papers showing that she is possessed of 920 kinsfolk!
And even that is not all. Mrs. Callan belongs to that most exclusive of all the numerous Revolutionary societies of America - The Daughters of Founders and Patriots.
Well does she deserve her high honors, for ten years has she spent in proving her right to them to the complete satisfaction of the skeptical founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of Founders and Patriots.
To the arrogant question of the latter society, "Did your ancestors settle here not later than 1667, and were they on the paternal side? Were they and their offsprings loyal citizens?" Mrs. Callan has replied quite as proudly: "Here are my records. Prove them to your own satisfaction."
Armed with stacks of church records, family records, wills and a hugh and imposing looking family tree, the lady with twenty Revolutionists and 920 kinsfolk has taken the societies by storm.
Now she holds the fortress and her name heads the membership lists.
Mrs. Callan's ambition has been realized. She will leave her children as a heritage one of the richest treasures a parent can leave a child. Namely, a knowledge of who their forefathers were and what part they took in establishing the Government of this country.
The three children on whom these weighty honors will descend will be able to beat their mother's record by one more Revolutionist and several more kinsfolk, from their father's side.
Mrs. Callan calls herself a Chicagoan. But she is hardly that. If she were, she would probably not be a Daughter of the American Revolution and a Daughter of Founders and Patriots. She is most emphatically a New Yorker. She was born in Herkimer County, New York, and in the house that has echoed with the wails of nine generations of Folts infants!
Her family were formerly the affluent and influential possesors of Herkimer County, and out of the musty, dusty, cobwebby garret of the homestead she brought forth her most important documents, to show her right to the ancestry she claims. The substantial old church, built many years ago by the scions of the house of Folts, yielded up its yellow records to the great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of its builder.
Mrs. Callan proved, without a doubt that she is descended from some of the oldest families in America and this is how it appears: Her mother was Margaret Tanner. Her father is Warner Folts. Away back in the seventeenth century Goodman William Tanner landed with Roger Williams in Rhode Island. His son, William, took unto himself for wife one Elizabeth Tibbetts. Thence ensues a long, long chain.
First, Francis Tanner, Judge, who was distinguished principally as the father of Isaac Tanner, the man who at one time owned 12,000 acres of land above the Mohawk valley. He divided it among his twelve sons, so that Mrs. Callan's great grandfather, the second Francis Tanner, owned quite an extensive bit of ground when he married Elizabeth Peterson, of Mayflower lineage, about 1790.
But the Tanners were most exclusive in their small world and Ichabod Tanner, the son of the second Francis, was the first to leave the parental roof to seek his fortune and bride in the wide world, otherwise, the valley below. Nancy Clapsadde, whose charms captured the handsome Ichabod's heart is Mrs. Callan's maternal grandmother. There is the Tanner branch of the big family tree.
Of the Folts family, Melchert Folts was the first to tread American soil. When he came over from Holland his name was Voltz. The Folts were Mohawk valley folks, and until the time of Nancy Clapsaddle's marriage, never went outside to find themselves wives. There were charming maids and handsome youths in plenty among the valley people. So it happened that Melchert Folts' son, Jacob, married Catrina Petrie, the daughter of Lieutenant Hanyost Petrie, Jr., of Revolutionary fame. Their son, Conrad, like his father and grandfather, married a girl in the valley, Anna Dygert.
When the British soldiers descended into the valley, secure in the belief that they would destroy all combatants, they found that they had sadly miscalculated the weight of the resistance meeting them. They were not acquainted with the stubbornness of these settlers lead by the Folts. Considerably backed with ranks very much thinned out, the redcoats retired from the fray sadder and wiser. The valley people, with little time for sad reflection over their loss, and with hastily bandaged wounds, again offered their services to the country, which needed them badly enough.
So it happens that Mrs. Callan. Nee Folts, has a record of twenty soldier ancestors, who were an honor to the buff and blue uniform of the Continental Army. In the midst of all the turmoil of the Revolution, Warner Folts, first, was born into the world. There is no record of his participating in the struggle unless his lusty infantile cries might be considered. He was reared on a wholesome regard for the active part taken by his father and both his grandfathers in the Revolution. In later years, he and his wife, whose people, the Getmans, had fought by the side of his people, transferred the same regard to their children.
Their son, Daniel, married his cousin. Mary Getman, and in time their son, Warner, the second, met and married the pretty Margaret Tanner, whose long line of ancestry was longer than her husband's. One of the oddest coincidences of the union of Warner Folts and Margaret Tanner is that through every branch and every twig, even to the leaf, both sides of Mrs. Callan's family tree show an unbroken line of American loyalists.
The old homestead in Herkimer county, an extremely well preserved family roof, which has sheltered the Folts for 191 years, was built by Melchert Folts. Within sociable distance are the homes of the other branches of the family. Near enough to permit of no excuse of staying away from service is the substantial stone fortress church, which was built in 1733 by the united efforts of the Folts, Herkimers, Perries, Dygerts, Shoemakers, Clapsaddles and Getmans, all of them on Mrs. Callan's family tree. It has had its full share of the people's joys and sorrows and played quite a part in the French and Indian wars, as well as the Revolution. It was used as a fort in both wars, and its sturdy resistance earned it the name of Fort Herkimer.

  A Sad Day In Camden
It is a sad day among the pupils of Camden's High School. John Reed is dead.
John was a senior, a bright boy, a good boy and an industrious boy. He worked every day after school as one of the Rome Sentinel's carriers delivering papers each evening in that village. Winter and summer, in sunshine and rain, he had for several years done his daily task, after as well as during school hours.
He was riding in an automobile on Saturday on the way to visit and cheer a sick friend at the Rome Hospital, an errand of mercy, when he was fatally injured. He died in the very hospital to which his kindly errand was taking him.
School will be closed tomorrow morning for the funeral.
John was 19. His training, his industry, his faithfulness and his generous heart pointed to a coming man of usefulness in the world.
  It is too bad.
