 - Joseph Russell Rider (Joseph H Rider)
Whose fine farm in section 16, township 4, range 4, Jennings township, stretches over 120 acres of valuable land, is also an honored survivor of the great Civil War.
To the settlement of whose issues he gave there years of his early manhood. He was born May 3, 1941, in Allen County, Ohio just five month after his parents had moved there from Michigan. He is the son of Isaac & Eliza Saltsman Rider, natives of Vermont & New York respectively.
Pioneer conditions prevented him from enjoying many educational advantages. The country round about was thinly settled and during his school days the children of the locality were gathered in subscription schools, which were sometime held in log structures in the clearings and sometimes in the home of pupils. By the time he was grown, conditions were materially changed and a later generation had many more advantages. He grew to manhood on the homestead and was trained in pratical farming, an occupation that has claimed his attention through life.
In 1862, He enlisted for service in the Civil War entering Co. A, 81 sst Reg. Ohio Voluntary Infantry and served three years, mainly in the army of Tennessee participating in all the hardships, long marches and battles of General Sherman's memorable campaign, He was one of the bronzed veterans who took part in the Grand Review at Washington after the triumph closing of the war.
Upon his return from the Army, he made arrangements to resume farming, and on August 24, 1865, he purchased 80 acres of land, situated in the woods, in Jennings Township. He lived in
a log cabin, all his early buildings being construction of logs. As he cleared and improved his land, he gradually added to its extent, until he now owns 120 acres and has 105 of these cleared. The old log buildings well served there purpose, but they have long since given way to comfortable, commodious and substantial buildings.
This valuable home and farm which literally developed from the wilderness, represents the industry and judicious managements of forty years. On December 20, 1868, he married Mahala Jane Rupert who is a Daughter of George and Lavina Parrott Rupert.
They belong to New Salem Presbyterian Church, in which he was a deacon. He is one of the representative men of his township and has been on of its most useful citizens, having lent his influence for years to the movements calculated to promote the sections best interests. They were buried in the church cemetery, Salem Township, Monticello, Auglaze County, Ohio.

 - My great, grandfather name is Joseph H. Rider, not Joseph Henry Rider, I was told my Russell Simpson daughter Addie Simpson Schwartz, that his name was Joseph Russell Rider, when he was in the Civil War a mistake was made and he didn't change it because of drawing a Civil War pension. Joseph couldn't read or write, so I figured that somehow that is what made the mistake. (Evelyn May Adams Fuller)
