Hiram Getman of Darien, who was struck by an Erie train about two miles west of here last Thursday morning, died at 6.30 o'clock that evening in the Emergency hospital, Buffalo, where he was taken immediately after the accident.
Mr. Getman did not recover consciousness. He leaves a widow; his mother, Mrs. Lucius Getman; two brothers, Dumas, Buffalo and Frank of Darien, and three sisters, Mrs. Sylvester Wilcox of Darien, Miss Grace Getman of Buffalo and Mrs. Otto Woolf of Corfu. He was taken to Buffalo on a freight, accompanied by Dr. Ellinwood. His wife and mother went to Buffalo on a later train.
Mr. Getman was a trackhand in Foreman John Scanlon's gang. The men were grassing at the time of the accident. As the train approached the other men stepped back and warned Mr. Getman, but his mind seemed to be elsewhere and he did not heed the warning or the whistle blast from the engine.
The funeral of Mr. Getman was held at his late home Monday at 2 o'clock. The Maccabees, of which he was a member, turned out in a body and took charge of the service at the grave. Burial was in the Darien cemetery.
