... a son, Vernon Irving, to Mr and Mrs. Vernon Klock, Utica; ....- Newspaper Article (The Herald-Journal, Syracuse, NY, Tuesday, September 16, 1958)
A young off-duty deputy sheriff was killed about 4 a.m. today when his car left Route 5 east of Fayetteville, rammed into a bank, and overturned, spilling the driver to the pavement.
The victim, Vernon I. Klock, 21, of Kirkville was run over by another car about 15 minutes after the accident, said Corp. William McDermott of the State Police’s DeWitt substation.
But, the trooper said, authorities believe Klock was dead before being struck by the second auto.
Coroner Harry L. Gilmore went to the scene and issued a verdict of accidental death due to a broken neck and crushed chest.
Klock was not scheduled to go back on duty with the sheriff department until 4 p.m. today, and investigators thought he was on his way home when the accident happened. He was also a musician and troopers believe he may have been returning from playing with a local band. He did not work yesterday, his regular day off.
Corp. McDermott said Klock was driving east on Route 5 when the crash happened on a curve near Ninety Acres Restaurant. The car went off the left side of the highway, hit the embankment, rolled over at least once, slammed back onto the highway throwing the driver out and then landed on its top on the right side of the road, the corporal said.
Troopers believe Klock fell asleep at the wheel.
Corp. McDermott said Klock’s car may have run over him after throwing him out.
About 15 minutes later, the trooper said, a car operated by Delbert Paice, 50, of Vernon ran over Klock’s body lying in the road.
Corp. McDermott said Gerald Cook of Canastota, driver of a truck that had stopped at the accident scene, told troopers that he tried to flag down Paice, but that the other driver could not stop in time to avoid the body.
The Cook truck also partly hid the body, from Paice’s view, McDermott said. Paice was held.
Cook told the troopers that Klock had passed him in Fayetteville a few minutes before the crash.
Also investigating were Troopers Elliott Singleton and Harold E. Tanner and deputy sheriffs.
Klock was a native of Kirkville and a graduate of Minoa High School, where he was a member of the school football team and band.
He was a sergeant in the 249th Armored Medical Detachment based at the E. Genesee Street Armory and had been a deputy sheriff six months.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon G. Klock and two brothers, David and Paul Klock.
Six fellow deputy sheriffs will act as bearers at the funeral, which will take place at 2 p.m. Friday in Minoa Methodist Church. The Rev. David Bunville will officiate and burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Garden Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Russell H. Schepp Funeral Home tomorrow and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
