South Columbia ... The death of our townsman Henry J. Helmer, last Wednesday after months of invalidism, recalls early Columbia history and happenings. His paternal ancestor Henry Helmer cleared land and erected his pioneer cabin and reared a family and was succeeded by his son Henry Jr., and his interesting family of sons and daughters. In after years he was succeeded by his son, the late William Helmer of Getman's Corners while Conrad, son of Henry Sr. erected and conducted the first hotel south of Dennison's. Conrad married successively two daughters of his neighbor, Conrad Getman and his wife Mary, daughter of Timothy Frank. His son Monroe married Mary Petrie a representative of the Petrie and Shoemaker families, and they were parents of the deceased and occupied the
home where four generations of this historic name have passed their lives and where the deceased has maintained the honor of his clan.
