 - (Watertown Daily Times - July 19, 1935)
Three Mile Bay -- Dr. Waterman A. Vincent, 78, for 53 years a practicing physician and long a prominent member of the medical profession in Jefferson county, died at 9:50 last night at his home here. Death was due to myocarditis, a heart disease, and followed a brief illness.
The veteran local physician was stricken with a severe heart attack early on the afternoon of July 11 at his office here and since that time had been critically ill at his home. The doctor had been in usual good health and on the morning of the day he was stricken ill he had made professional calls in Chaumont, Three Mile Bay and vicinity. In the afternoon he was at his office. Suddenly, he felt ill and went to lie down in the rest room of his office.
While he was resting there, Mrs. Vincent discovered that the doctor was very ill. He immediately asked that his son, Dr. Leonard M. Vincent, practicing physician in Watertown, be summoned. The son came here from Watertown at once. During the afternoon, Dr. Vincent responded somewhat to treatment. Unable to move because of his condition, he was carried on a stretcher to his home next door where he was put to bed.
Several physicians were called in consultation. Among them were Dr. Wardner D. Ayer, Syracuse, a leading neurologist, and Dr. H. C. Montgomery, of Watertown. Dr. Ayer had been summoned to Watertown to consult in another case. Dr. Vincent, however, failed to rally. Members of his family were at his bedside when he died.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 at the family home. Rev. W. A. Herzog, pastor of the First Baptist church of this village, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Three Mile Bay cemetery.
While not a member of the church, Dr. Vincent had served as a trustee of the First Baptist church for many years. For years he had also been treasurer of the Three Mile Bay board of education. The doctor had also served as health officer of the town of Lyme.
 - Dr. W. A. Vincent is a native of Jefferson county, having been born in Clayton, eldest son of Leonard and Mary Johnson Vincent, who were among the early settlers of that vicinity. In his youth while preparing for his medical career he was employed as a clerk in the C. A. Ellis drug store at Clayton. Dr. Vincent attended Ives Seminary at Antwerp and Belleville academy. At that time his splendid penmanship attracted attention and he was asked to instruct in that now neglected art.
At the age of 25 he was graduated from the Baltimore Medical college and is now one of the oldest alumni in the state. Dr. Vincent usually attends the alumni meetings of his alma mater where the number of his contemporaries is small. His vacations while at college were spent in the office of Dr. James G. Spencer, the same office in which his younger son, Dr. L. M. Vincent, now practices medicine. Associated with Dr. Vincent at that time was Dr. C. N. Bibbins, senior member of the firm of Bibbins, Montgomery, and Vincent.
After Dr. Vincent secured his medical degree he journeyed here to Three Mile Bay to visit an uncle, G. W. Rickett. His uncle persuaded the young man that he could do no better than locate in Three Mile Bay, then a thriving small village. There for the past 52 years he has maintained his residence and identified himself with many of the village interests.
After two years he met and married Bessie Lansing, only daughter of Henry and Maria Guile Lansing. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. E. King in the same house where the couple now reside. Besides the family, Mrs. John Lansing Schuyler and Mrs. Furman Lott were present. They are still living, neighbors of Dr. and Mrs. Vincent. The minister's wife, Mrs. King, was also present. She now resides in Ilion.
His bride of 50 years ago was born on the farm, now known at the Long Carrying place which was a tract of land conveyed to her grandfather, Daniel Guile by Vincent LeRay de Chaumont or agent. Miss Lansing attended Watertown High school from which institution she was graduated in 1874. This was one of the first classes to be graduated from the high school which then stood on State street. The principal at that time was Hannibal Smith, father of Justice E. N. Smith.
When Mrs. Vincent was 20 years old the Lansing family moved to the village of Three Mile Bay and purchased the home of Jacob Putnam which is the present home of Dr. and Mrs. Vincent.
Two sons were born, the elder, Harry Lansing Vincent, now resides in Syracuse and the younger, Dr. L. M. Vincent, is a practicing physician in Watertown. Dr. and Mrs. Vincent have seven grandchildren. (Wahlfield)

Horace Andrew Phillips

 - 1900 census, Clayton, Jefferson, NY, fam # 109 - Phillips Andrew, b. Nov 1852, ae 47, married 18 yr, born in NY, parents born in NY, Farmer,  owns his home without a mortgage; Addie, wife, b. Jan 1856, ae 44, married 18 yr, born in NY, parents born in NY; Ford, son, b. Sep 1882, ae 17, born in NY; Blanche, daughter, b. Dec 1896, ae 3; (1 farm laborer)
 - Received the educational advantages afforded by the common schools of his day, and assisted his father with the duties of the home farm, thus acquiring a thorough knowledge of agriculture. Since attaining his majority he has been interested in farming with his father, adding land to the original purchase of twenty acres until now (1904) they are the owners of three hundred and fifty-seven acres, one of the most extensive farms in the town, which is under a high state of cultivation. They have repaired and put in first-class condition all the buildings and in 1903 they erected a commodious new barn, thus making them the owners of two large barns. for many years Mr Phillips has taken an active part in political affairs, serving as delegate to many county conventions. He has also been equally active in Masonic affairs, affiliating with Depauville Lodge. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Chursh.
He is a man above the average of intelligence, and with his father is an important factor in the agricultural and social affairs of the section in which he resides. It is not possible for the average reader to realize from the foregoing the struggle it has cost these men, particularly the father of Horace A Phillips (Andrew Phillips), to reach the present position of affluence and comfort. Being left a widower, with four small children, it required a strong and resolute will to fight back the fearful tide of adversity. Although kind-meaning friends offered to assist him by finding homes for his children, he felt that his love for them was too strong to make the sacrifice and he toiled bravely on to give them a home and an education. His efforts were rewarded for in a a few years he had the satisfaction of seeing his two daughters obtain certificates for teaching in advance of other girls who had far better opportunities, and his sons to occupy places a commendable citizens in the community. His declining years are now being spent with Horace A Phillips, who holds him in the highest esteem and affection.
