Stone Mills Man Had Fractured Skull
Inquest Will Be Held
Assistant District Attorney to Investigate Accident in Which Car Driven By Utica Boys Struck George E Sanford.
George E Sanford of Stone Mills, aged 70 years, who was injured on Wednesday night when he was struck by a car driven by WF Peate, aged 17 years, of Utica, died about 6:45 this morning at the City hospital. Sanford suffered a fractured skull and other bruises and cuts. Because of the injured man’s age, his recovery was considered doubtful from the time that he was brought to the hospital.
The accident occurred between Lafargeville and Fisher’s Landing. Sanford was struck in the back and thrown to the ground, landing on his face. The car was ditched. The young man returned to the scene, picked up Sanford and rushed him to the City hospital. He was in an unconscious condition and never fully regained consciousness.
Peate was accompanied by Ellwood King, also aged 17 years, a resident of 492 Genessee street, Utica. Peate resides with his parents at 30 Jewitt Place. The boys made a report at the police headquarters here and were then taken before District Attorney E Robert Wilcox. Because Peate’s father is dying in a Utica hospital, he and his companion were allowed to go on their own recognizance.
According to the boys’ stories, they were traveling at about 25 miles an hour. A car driven by a woman was approaching from the opposite direction and they claim that she crowded their car over to the shoulder of the road and the accident resulted.
The version the witnesses of the accident differ. It was said today that the spot where the man was struck and the place where the boys passed the car driven by a woman were fully 200 feet apart. It is said, however, that the boys were not traveling at a fast rate of speed. King was asleep at the time the crash occurred, he said.
George E Sanford was born in Limerick, 70 years ago, and had resided in Jefferson county practically all of his life. He was educated in the Limerick schools and later learned the trade of a carpenter. He also worked for many years in different parts of the county as a farmer. During the summer season for the past few years, Mr Sanford had been employed as a state road worker and he was at work when he was struck by the car.
Mr Sanford was twice married, his first wife having died a number of years ago. He was married the second time on April, last.
Surviving Mr Sanford are his wife, Mrs Martha Sanford of Stone Mills; three sons, Ernest, William and Willard Sanford, all of Stone Mills; one daughter, Mrs Elmer (Fanny) Klock of this city; two brothers, Simon Sanford of Brownville and Burt Sanford of Three Mile Bay, and two sisters, Mrs Byron VanEpps and Mrs O Bartlett, both of this city.
The remains were taken from the hospital to the Samuel J Payne undertaking parlors at 170 Arsenal street. Funeral services will be held from there Monday afternoon at 2. Interment will be made at North Watertown cemetery.
Assistant District Attorney Melvin F Kinkley announced this afternoon that he would conduct an inquest in the death of Sanford within the next few days, probably next Monday or Wednesday.
