  Former Watertown Man Dies at Gunns Corners
  W. P. Lingenfelter Had Spent Greater Part of Life In Clayton
  Stone Mills -- June 22. W. P. Lingenfelter, age 56, and formerly of Clayton and Watertown, died at 9:15 Monday evening at his home in Gunns Corners after an illness of three months from dropsy and heart trouble. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 11 (old time) from the home, Rev. Ira Dewey (unclear) of the Stone Mills Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be made in Clayton.
  Mr. Lingenfelter was born in Clayton the son of the late Lewis & Mary C. Lingenfelter. He lived there for fifty years following the occupation of a farmer. For the past two years he made his home in Watertown, moving to Gunns Corners last October. His marriage to Miss Mae Zimmer of Alexander (sic) Center took place thirty years ago.
  Surviving besides his widow are one son, Roy Lingenfelter, of Chaumont; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Lalonde of Gunns Corners, and three grandchildren.

  Mrs. Minnie O. Lingenfelter 58, Dies at Three Mile Bay
  Three Mile Bay, June 19 - Mrs. Minnie O. Lingenfelter, 58, died at her home near here on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. She was born on October 31, 1870 at Plessis, daughter of the late George and Anna Zimmer. She married William Lingenfelter of Clayton on August 12, 1891 at Ogdensburg. Nearly all her life was spent at Clayton. Since her husband's death, she resided with her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Lalonde of Three Mile Bay.
   She is survived by two children Raymond W. Lingenfelter of Perch River, and Marjorie A. Lalonde of Three Mile Bay; three brothers, John of Syracuse, George of Redwood and Lewis of Plessis. Two sisters, Mrs. Virgil Wasmuth of Watertown and Mrs. Flora Dorr of Stone Mills and several nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services will be held from the home Friday at 10 a.m, Rev. G. A. Foote of Three Mile Bay officiating. Interment will be made at Clayton.

  Brownville, Jan, 7. —Mr. and Mrs. George Hosner and family and Mr. and Mrs. Truman Daniels and family attended the funeral of Mrs. Daniels' father, Hiram Harter or St Lawrence. Mr. Daniel's son Pearl was unfortunate enough to freeze both cheeks during the drive to St. Lawrence.


Hazel Washer Welch

  Mrs. Hazel Daniels, 76, of Valparaiso, Ind.; widow of Perl Daniels, formerly of Watertown, died at 7:35 this morning at Mercy. Hospital where she had been a paient since June 29.
  Mrs, Daniels was. stricken with a.heart attack while visiting a niece, Mrs. Nora Bush, 960 W. Main St. and was admitted to the hospital June 15.
  The body was removed to the Cummings Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
  She is survived by two sons, Walter Welch, Carthage, and Clark Welch, Valparaiso, Ind., five grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Carden Cheney, Sharon, Vt.
  Born Dec. 9, 1897, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter H. Washer, she was first married to Carlos Welch. He died Nov. 16, 1949, in Florida. She was married to Perl H. Daniels Aug. 11, 1956. Mr. Daniels died in April, 1964.
  She had resided in New Jersey, Detroit, Mich., and was a Watertown resident from 1945 until 1969, when she moved to Indiana. Mrs. Daniels was employed as a maid at the Hotel Woodruff 15 years. She was a member of the Eagles, Moose, American Legion and V.F.W. in Indiana.

 - Obituary (Watertown Daily Times, NY August, 1957)
  James R. Harter, 83, of South Rutland, a retired town of Rutland farmer, died about 7 Saturday evening at the Ryan Nursing home, 518 Pine street, where he had been patient since April 20.
   The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Cleveland Funeral home. Rev. John C. Wetzel, pastor of the Rutland Congregational church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Maple Hill cemetery on Middle road, Rutland.
   Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. May Cummings Harter, are two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Jennie) Davis, Adams Center, and Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Stuart, Rutland; six sons, Glenn C., 216 Arlington street, Lyle H., 109 Central street, Floyd J., Rutland, Niles L., East Rodman, Carl R., Massey street road, and Earl P., South Rutland; one sister, Miss Elizabeth Harter, who resides at the Henry Keep Home; 17 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   Another son, Ralph W., died at the age of 37 February, 1953, at Copenhagen.
   Mr. Harter's health began to fail in January.
   He entered the Mercy hospital for treatment then and returned to his home until his condition forced his removal to the Ryan Nursing home in April.
   Mr. Harter was born in the town of Clayton Dec. 20, 1873, a son of the late Hiram H. and Alida Lingenfelter Putman (sic) Harter. He attended the schools in the Chaumont, Depauville area and worked with his father at farming until he was married
  On Dec. 29, 1897, he married Miss Mary L. Cummings, daughter of the late Peter and Jennie Fredenburg Cummings, at Burrville.
   Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Harter operated farms near Depauville until March 1, 1909, when they moved to the town of Rutland and purchased the Clemons farm and later the adjoining Corey farm, which they operted until July 1, 1937, when they purchased a home at South Rutland. They had resided there since.
   Mr. and Mrs. Harter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 29, 1947, at Copenhagen at the home of their late son, Ralph, and family, attended by all the members of their large family, also friends and relatives who attended their wedding.
   Mr. Harter attended the Middle Road Congregational church and was a former member of the Masons.


Mary L Cummings

   Mrs. Mary L. Cummings Harter, 90, of the Town of Rutland, widow of James R. Harter, died at 12:02 this afternoon in the Mercy Hospital where she had been a patient since June 16. Death was attributed to affirmities of old age.
  Survivors are eight children, Mrs. Erwin (Jennie) Davis, Adams Center; Glenn C. Harter, 1101 Bronson St.; Lyle H. Harter, 109 Central St.; Floyd J. Harter, Watertown, Route 2; Mrs. Edward A. (Gladys) Stuart, Watertown, Route 2; Niles L. Harter, East Rodman, Star Route; Carl R. Harter, 1118 Coffeen St.; and Earl P. Harter, South Rutland; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
  Another son, Ralph W., died at his home in Copenhagen at the age of 37 on February 19, 1953.
  Born in Burr's Mills, September 18, 1877, one of six children of Peter and Jennie Fredenberg Cummings, Mrs. Harter spent her early days at Burr's Mills in the home now owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ennis. In those days it was the site of the village blacksmith shop owned and operated by her father and later by her brother, William R. Cummings.
  On Dec. 29, 1877, she was married to James R. Harter of the Town of Clayton and they lived on farms in the Depauville section until March 1909 when they purchased a farm in the town of Rutland. They operated the farm until July 1, 1937, when they retired and moved to South Rutland.
  Mr. Harter died August 10, 1957, at the age of 83. Mrs. Harter had since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Stuart, near Middle Road Church.
   She was a member of the Rutland United Church of Christ.

  Glenn C. Harter, 79, of 1101 Bronson St., a former Town of Rutland justice and town board member, died at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday at Mercy Hospital where he had been admitted May 12.
  The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Reed and Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Clapp, pastor of Rutland Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
  Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Conributions may be made in his name to the memorial fund of the Rutland Congregational Church.
  Members of Orient Lodge, 238, Copenhagen, will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Thursday.
  He is survived by his wife, Harriet; four brothers, Floyd J., 410 Columbia St., Niles, Whitesville, Carl R., Northland Estates, and Earl P., Tylerville; a sister, Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Stuart, Rutland, nieces and nephews. Brothers, Ralph and Lyle, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Allen, died before him.
  Born Aug. 2, 1902, in the Town of Clayton, a son of James R. and Mary Cummings Harter, he moved to the Town of Rutland as a child and attended district schools.
  He was graduated from the Dale Carnegie course.
  He worked on the family farm and after he married Harriet Allen of Rutland Oct. 2, 1923, the couple purchased the Alex Stuart farm and operated it several years.
   He served as Town of Rutland justice of the peace and on the town board several years.
   The couple moved to 216 Arlington St., after his retirement from farming.
  He worked two years at the New York Air Brake and eight years at the Globe Store. The couple later moved to 1101 Bronson St.
  He spent 16 winters in Lakeland, Fla., and served as master of ceremonies for several organizations here and in Florida.
  He was a member and former trustee and deacon of the Rutland Congregational Church and served on several committees. A member of Orient Lodge 238, he was a former member of the Rutland Grange and a charter member of the Rutland Community Association.


Harriet Allen

  Harriet A. Harter, 88, of 1101 Bronson St., widow of Glenn C. Harter, died Sunday in the House of the Good Samaritan where she was admitted July 16.
   The funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
   Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in her name to the Rutland Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
   She is survived by two nephews, Jackson Allen, Middle Road, and Reginald Allen; a niece, Joan Allen, Watertown; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews and several brothers and a sisters-in-law.
  Born August 13, 1897, in the Town of Worth, daughter of Bert and Lena Tucker Allen, she was graduated from Adams Teachers Training Class and taught in the Town of Rutland and other rural schools.
   She married Glenn Harter October 2, 1923, in Watertown. Mr. Harter, a former Town of Rutland Justice of the Peace and Councilman and dairy farmer, died November 10, 1981.
   The couple had spent sixteen winters in Lakeland, Florida, before Mr. Harter's death.
  She was a member of Rutland Congregational Church, was a former organist and choir member and was a member of the Earnest Workers Group of the church.
