- "George Frederick (Second son of Geo. Galloway & Almira Schell) was born Apr.6, 1859. Was the favorite grandson of Grandpa and Grandma Schell. He was a graduate of Ingersoll H.S. and London College. At the age of 24 he moved alone to Rolette County, ND in 1883, where he settled on a homestead near what is now Rolla, ND. Here he built a log house and barn and cleared the land of Sage Brush (by hand). His only close neighbors were Chippawa Indians who were friendly. His nearest town was Devils Lake (80 miles away) by ox cart and team. It was here he went for supplies.
Later he returned to Ontario for a visit. When he returned to North Dakota, several young friends accompanied him. They all settled in homesteads, remaining there and raising their families. John Wayne, John Jolliffe, James Ward, William Mitchell and Jack Mullet."
G.Fred Galloway was Justice of the Peace of Mt. Pleasant Township for 25 years. In 1907 he was appointed U.S. Commissioner by Gov. John Burke, which office he held for 10 years; was deputy registrar of Deeds for Rolette County from 1893 to 1896. He was police magistrate for 17 years. Fred held the first deed for a lot in the city of Rolla, and built the first business building - a small real estate office for his own use and a blacksmith shop operated by A.S.Porteous - his father-in-law. He helped build the first Methodist Church and started the first Sunday School in Rolla. ’4
