 - My grandmother Vandeveer was a fine pioneer woman, very trustedby her neighbors, who helped to lay out the dead - as they had to do in those days.  People came to her for advice.  She stayed alone after my grandfather died and she made money through making loans, she was especially partial to the Amish - they were very honest and always paid back.  She made loans for less interest to them because of their honesty.
Ethelwyn Vandeveer O'Sullivan The Hutchinson, KS News recorded her death and we have the clipping. She "died 8-12-1942, in her 86th year in Utica, NY.  Previous to her death she had lived in Whitestone, Queens, New York, NY, with her granddaughter, Ethelyn Vandeveer O'Sullivan and the latter's husband, John.  She had been attended in her lastweakness by her grandson, Rudolph E. Vandeveer of Rome, NY.
The Easter previous to her death, another grandson, Leroy George Vandeveer (attorney), his wife and daughter, Cornelia Prime, had visited her."IWVandeveer Obituary from "The Hutchinson, Kansas, News:"
Mrs. Clara Bell Vandeveer
"Funeral service for Mrs. Clara Bell Vandeveer, who died in Rome, N.Y., was held there Thursday.  The body will be cremated and the ashes will be brought to Hutchinson to be buried at the Eastside Cemetery. "Mrs. Vandeveer, widow of George A. Vandeveer who met accidental death here in 1908, was born in Illinois and was married to Mr. Vandeveer there in 1875.  They came to Hutchinson in the early eighties and after Mr. Vandeveer's death, his widow continued to live here until
about 12 years ago when she went to Detroit to live with her son Fred L. Vandeveer.  Recently she has been living with her grandson, Dr. Rudolf E. Vandeveer in Rome.
"Survivors are two sons, Fred L. of Detroit and Harry D. Vandeveer of Los Angeles, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. F.L. Martin, 213 East Sixth, is a sister-in-law of the deceased." (Beresford)

 - From "The Vandeveers of NC, KY, and IN," Mabel VanDyke Baer, Whittet & Shepperson, 1960:
"He was a farmer, lawyer, banker and judge.  He ran a bank in Burton, KS, and engaged also in selling TX ponies of which he owned quite a string. He left the banking business to enter into the practice of law with the Hon. A.R. Schleble, and became a member of the Reno Co. Bar Assn, practicing law in Kansas City, MO, where he was appointed by the Supreme Court as a member of the Board of Law Examiners of KS.  He went to New York City with the Surety Co. On his return he lived in Hutchinson, KS, and was a member ofthe law firm Vandeveer & Martin.
Frank L. Martin, a member of the firm, married Nellie Vandeveer, G.A.'s sister.
He was killed in an intersection accident the day he was nominated as Judge of the District Court of Reno Co., KS.  His fellow lawyers and judges of Hutchinson, KS, published a printed testimonial to his memory, a copy of which is in the possion of Mrs. Leroy George Vandeveer, his daughter-in-law.
"A newspaper at the time he was running for judge of the 9th judicial district on the Republican ticket printed an article stating,"Judge Vandeveer has been a successful lawyer.  Except for 10 years in the nineties that he spent in NewYork in the practice of his profession, he has lived in this district since 1879.  He has not been a politician or a candidate but has established himself as a skilled and scholarly lawyer."
He died before he was formally declared judge, but he had already been filling the post.  He started as a bookkeeper and was very unhappy in the job, which he saw as a dead end job at the bank and Clara said, "You've always wanted to be a lawyer, so why don't you get the law books and go for the law?" And she tutored him, she could have passed the exam herself! Ethelwyn Vandeveer O'Sullivan
