 - Title: Cushing Iowa Centenial book
James and Laura Brown Spaulding - James Henry Spaulding, son of John and Nancy Thomas Spaulding, was born January 29, 1864, in Jackson Co., Iowa. He came from Calamus, Iowa to Ida County and the Cushing area about 1884. James worked as a farm hand after he came to the Cushing area for $15.00 a month through the summer; during the winter he worked for his board and room. He picked corn on the King Ranch the first year he was in Cushing. he also worked for Gilbert and Henry, who lived on the farm once owned by Fred Nissen, and also for Alfred Holcomb. In February 1889, James purchased the east half of the norhwest quarter of section 5, Battle Township from J. E. Seitz, containing according to government survey, one hundred eleven and more or less-except the right of way of the Maple River Railroad. This farm at present is owned by Everett Still. James H. Spaulding and Laura Brown were married at Sioux City on September 23, 1890. Laura Brown was the fifth child of William Willis and Mary Cline Allison Brown. She came to Ida County about 1880 from Clinton County. Laura's family and the Spaulding family came from the same neighborhood. She did housework for the Somer family in Ida Grove, and at the King Ranch, where her half brother, Hiram Willis Brown, was foreman. In a letter dated August 19, 1883, she wrote to her mother, Mary Brown, in Clinton County that she was now working for a family named Bardwell, who was Mrs. Riley Walrod's brother. Seh received $2.00 a week to start. After Laura and James were married, they worked for Alfred Holcomb until January 1891. At this time they moved to the farm they had purchased in Battle Township, where their sons, Clifford James, and Bruce John were born. In 1894, they sold this farm to James' older brother, George and his wife, Cora Mae. In March 1894, they purchased the northeast quarter of Section 7, Battle Township, consisting of 160 acres from John H. Knox and his wife, Emma, for $6400. Their son, Lowal, was born on this farm. When they first moved to this farm they lived in an old house. In 1901, they had Albert Anfinson build a new home for them. James and Laura moved to Ida Grove in July 1922. James passed away June 1950, and Laura in August 1957.
