Herkimer - Charles Bell, 82, former Herkimer County judge and surrogate, died unexpectadly shortly after noon Tuesday in his home, 306 Prospect St.
He had gone into the kitchen to speak with his wife when he collapsed, Dr. James Gallo said death was caused by a shock.
At the time of his death, Mr. Bell was still engaged in law practice. His office was at 153 Main St. He served three consecutive terms as county judge from 1912 to 1930. He retired from that office Dec. 31, 1929, having reached the legal age limit before his term had expired.
Mr. Bell was a member of a family which had been represented in the Mohawk Valley and Herkimer County since Colonial days, the progenitor being Jacob Bell, hero of the Revolutionary War. He was killed at the battle of Oriskany, fighting under the command of Gen. Nicholas Herkimer.
Judge Bell was born in the Town of Columbia, Herkimer County, a son of Warner and Susan Brown Bell. When a child, he moved with his prents to Cedarville, where he recevied his initial education in the district schools. This was supplemented ba a course in a select school at Cedarville after which he entered the Whitestown Seminary, from which he was graduated in 1879.
In January, 1835 (?), Mr. Bell formed a partnership here with John D. Henderson. This was continued until 1908.
From 1908 until 1912, when he was elected county judge and surrogate, he practiced privately.
Mr. Bell ascended to the bench Jan. 1, 1912. He was a Democrat. For eight years he was a member of the Police and Fire Commission and for 12 years served on the Municipal Commission.
Mr. Bell was a Royal Arch Mason and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, beloning the the (sic) Ziyara Temple of Utica. His Royar Arch connection was with Ilion chapter. His blue lodge connection was with Herkimer Lodge 128. He also was a member of the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in New York State. For many years he had been a member of the Free Library board of trustees and it's president. He was a former president of teh Down and Out club.
At Fort Herkimer on May 19, 1887, he married Miss Darrie Steele of Fort Herkimmer, a member of a colonial family.
Mr. Bell leaves his wife and a daughter Kathlyn.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday fromn the First Universalist Church by the Rev. Harold W. Haynes. A Masonic committal service will be conducted in the church. The body will be placed in a vault at Oak Hill Cemetery and burial will be made in the spring.

HERKIMER—Mrs. Carrie Steele Bell, 93, widow of County Judge Charles Bell, died Feb. 18, 1957, in her home, 306 Prospect. She was born Aug. 9, 1864, in Fort Herkimer, daughter of Jermiah and Mary Edick Steele. She attended Herkimer schools and was graduated from Clinton Liberal Institute, Fort Plain.
She was married to Judge Bell May 19, 1886, in Fort Herkimer and they came to Herkimer the following year. He served as county judge and surrogate from 1913 to 1929. He died in March, 1941.
Mrs. Bell was a member of the Universalist Church, the AUW [Association of Universalist Women] of the church. She had been a member of General Herkimer Chapter, DAR, for more than 60 years and also a member of Myrtle Chapter, OES.
She leaves a daughter. Miss Kathlyn Bell, Herkimer and several cousins.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 Saturday in the home with the Rev. Thomas Y. Tyrell, pastor of the Universalist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The death of Fred Gardner, a well known and respected citizen of this place, occurred at his home here Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Gardner had been very poorly all Winter. He was a kind neighbor and always ready to lend a helping hand to any one who was in need. He had many friends who will always remember his many acts of kindness and will sadly miss the voice that is still. But our loss will be God's gain. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Maggie Jacobson, and a brother, Frank Gardner, and sister, Flora McMahon of Ilion. The funeral was held from his late horm Friday afternoon. The floral tributes were beautiful and showed the esteem in which he was held. The choir rendered two selections, ''Abide With Me" and "Face to Face." Reverend E. Ridgway officiated. Interment in the Columbia Cemetery.
