- Richard Getman and Mary Ann Shults are 1st cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are Christian Getman and Anne Eve Timmerman.- Obituary (Fulton County Republican, Johnstown, NY, Thursday, November 22, 1894)
A shade of gloom was cast over the town of Palatine, Tuesday morning, November 18th, when the announcement was made of the unexpected death of Mrs. Richard Getman. She had been ill but one day. She was highly connected in the way of relationship, being one of a
family of eight children of the late William Shults, who represented one of the oldest pioneer and most influential families of the town of Palatine.
In 1837 she was married to Richard Getman, who also represents one of the oldest and well known families of the Mohawk valley.
She resided with her faithful husband on the farm where she died, for 67 years; six children blessed their home. She is survived by her husband and five chlldren, Mrs. Josephus Getman of Fort Hunter, William F. Getman of Tribes Hill, Albert, Betsy Ann and Norman Getman of the town of Palatine, besides five grand children and one great grand son. She also leaves two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Hiram Shults of St. Johnsville, Mrs. Levi Everson of Fonda, Christopher Shults of Palatine and Jerome Shults of Avoca, Steuben Co. N. Y., to mourn her sudden demise.
With her mental accomplishments she combined much social and moral worth and was beloved by a large circle of relatives and friends.
She was a devoted christian mother and for many years was a consistent member of the Reformed church of Ephratah, and one of the foremost in advancing its interests. She labored faithfully in the vineyard of the Lord and led an upright and exemplary life in the full hope of a blessed immortality.
The funeral was held from the family residence Friday morning at 11 o'clock and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr . Wil*on and the Rev. Mr. Van Arnam of Ephratah. The singing was by a quartette of the Reformed church of Ephratah. The remains, reposed in a cloth covered casket, trimmed with gold, on the lid was a plate bearing the inscription:
"Mary Ann Getman died Nov. 18, aged 75 years two months and nine days." The floral offerings were beautlful including a pillow of flowers which bore the word mother and cut flowers from intimate friends beside a sheaf of wheat.
The interment was made in the family lot at Ephratah. The family have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement .She is not dead; she is but sleeping;
The cold, cold grave is only keeping
The dust to dust returning:
Death could not claim the soul immortal;
For angels from the heaveuly portal
Bent o'er with eager yearning.
The good and right, with boldness doing,
The better path in all pursuing.
And faithful in each duty
Her life was one harmonious blending
To all a gracious influence lending
So full of truth and beauty.
And though the grave her form is keeping,
She is not dead, she is but sleeping
To wake to joys supernal;
One seraph more in Heaven is dwelling,
One more redeemed the choir is swelling
To praise the great eternal.

- The 1900 census indicates that he was a widower.- Death Account
Saturday morning, Benjamin Getman and James Hulet went to Palatine church on a fishing trip. There Benjamin met with a fatal accident. They fished on one side of old Garoga creek but not meeting with good success they were on their way to the other side and attempted to cross the Central railroad bridge at that point when he was struck by a passenger train and hurled over the bridge into the creek. It is said that the train was stopped and quite a number of the passengers came back and looked to see the body which was lying on its face in the bottom of the creek. And as there were no boats at that point it was not rescued. Towards night A. P. Beard and Eli smith went down the river and on their return they reported that parties were going to drag the creek to recover the body.The Radii, Canajoharie, NY

Fort Plain, N.Y., Oct. 14.-Yesterday, about dusk, as James G. DeWandelaer and his hired man, James Cook, were hauling cornstalks from the field to a barn, the team of horses became frightened at a portion of the load sliding upon them and ran away. The horses dashed directly toward the barn, and before DeWandelear and Cook could leap from the load the entrance was reached.
The men, both greatly excited and standing erect, crashed against the upper portion of the entrance with terrific force and were hurled from the load. Cook was killed instantly, his neck being broken, and DeWandelaer was seriously injured, probably fatally, a number of his ribs being fractured, an arm broken and internal injuries received.
DeWandelaer is prominent as a farmer and member of the New York State Grange. His farm, where the accident occurred, is in the town of Palatine, across the Mohawk from this village.

Last Saturday evening, about nine, the citizens of this village were startled at the announcement of the sudden death of Seth Fox, a well-known and respected citizen. His wife went to church in the early part of the evening, leaving him at home reading the paper, apparently well, and upon her return, at about half past eight, he was found lying upon the floor, dead, no indications of the cause being apparent. Slight bruises were found upon his face, probably caused by hitting something when falling. A physician was immediately summoned, but life was extinct. He was apparently a very healthy and robust man, and was seen upon the street but a few hours previous to his death. The doctor pronounced the disease apoplexy. He was about 59 years of age. His funeral was attended by a large number of people, including members of St Johnsville Lodge , F. & A. M., of which be was a member.
