10520. Frances Helen Getman

 - GFG - B 504a / B / A / A
 - Newspaper Article (The Leader-Herald, Gloversville - Johnstown, NY, Saturday, November 17, 1962)
A 250 year-old deed signed by pioneer Frederick Getman has been discovered by historical research in the area.
The deed transferred certain lands in the Stone Arabia Patent to the settler's son, Capt. Christian Getman.
Ralph Parent, Ilion, president of the Getman Family Association, the Getman Family Association, was advised of the find by Franklin J. Bowman, a Scarsdale historian. The paper was presented to Mr. Bowman by Mrs. Harold Lane, Lassellsville. Her father, Asa Getman, was born and reared in the original Getman homestead at Ephratah.
Seven hundred acres of this land were acquired in the early 1700s by Frederick Getman and certain parts are still in the possession of G. Russell Getman, a linear descendant of the original settler. An investigation in 1957 revealed that the land was once the site of a Mohawk village in the 14th Century.
Excavations indicated that a long house of the Iroquois was located on the land. Posts that had been driven into the ground left traces in the soil. The material was found to be radioactive, when analyzed, and the date of construction was set at about 1300 A. D., long before Columbus discovered America.

Marriage Notes for Edna Bell Saltsman and Winfield Scott Duesler

 - Wedding Announcement (St Johnsville Enterprise, NY, Thursday, January 16, 1902)
Last evening at St. John’s Reformed church was the scene of the handsomest wedding held for many years in this village, if ever surpassed in the valley, when Miss Edna B. Saltsman was united in marriage to Mr. Winfield S. Duesler, two young persons prominent in the aforesaid church. Upwards of four hundred people assembled to witness the beautiful and impressive ceremony which was performed by Rev. O. J. Hogan.
The edifice was beautifully decorated with pink and white bunting, and down the aisles ten young maidens dressed in white held hoops and sashes of pink and white silk, aiding the ushers, and adding brilliancy and grace to tbe scene. Miss Saltsman was gowned in white Liberty satin with pearl trimmings and tulle veil. The groom wore the conventional dress suit.
At eight o’clock, while the orchestra played Lohngrin’s Wedding March, the clergyman entered the east aisle, followed by two ushers and the ringbearer (Edna Saltsman, a namesake of the bride). These preceded the groom and the best man, Mr. Murray Duesler brother of the groom, arm in arm, who advanced to the altar where they waited for the bridal party.
Very shortly afterwards the west door was thrown open and two ushers moved forward when a dimunitive sixteenth century chevalier (Rexford Hall) in white satin, and staff heralded the coming of the bride and made way for the maid of honor, Miss Myra Horn, attired in pink mousseline desoie and bearing a shower of carnations. Then followed the bride carrying a satin-bound prayer book, and leaning upon the arm of her father who gave her away, and thus Miss Saltsman became Mrs. Duesler.
About one hundred and twenty-five guests then repaired to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Saltsman to extend congratulations. The house was festive in its appearance, the pink and white color scheme being carried out to a point of nicety, and the entertainment was right royal in degree.
The ushers were Messrs. Melvin Snell. Clifford Flander, Earl McKenzie and Lewis Vosler and were the recipients of Etruscan gold scarf-pins set with opals, and the chevalier a silver spoon, while from the bride the bridesmaid received a brooch and the ring-bearer a ring. The presents were numerous, varied and costly, all attested to the esteem of the contracting parties and their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Duesler took the midnight train en route for New York and New Haven amid the usual good natured pollings of rice and old shoes mingled with the best wishes of their friends and neighbors.

10530. Mildred S Duesler

 - GFG # B 911 / A
 - What happend to her?
 - She was misakenly suspected to be  the person in this article. She is identified as living in Johnstown in the 1945 obituary of an aunt.

 - Newspaper Article (The Morning Herald, Gloversville, NY, Friday, May 3, 1931)
Authorities in Gloversville went to work yesterday on the theory that the body of the titan haired woman discovered along the Adirondack "Bootleg Trail" near Elizabethtown late Tuesday afternoon, may be that of a local resident There are several circumstances reported by authorities in Essex county, which tally with information police uncovered here yesterday.
Because these items checked so closely, Gloversville police made out a report to the New York State Police at the Troy Barracks last night. The state police were asked for further information in the case, as well as an accurate description of the body and teeth.
Descriptions state police have given out, authorities say, check very closely with a woman who resided here and was known as Mildred Duesler or Mildred Anderson. From various sources police learned yesterday that Miss Duesler or Anderson, came here from Oneonta to learn to become a glove maker. She was employed for some time in one or two local factories. Police information was to the effect that she would disappear for short periods of time and had very little to say relative to her trip.
Miss Duesler or Anderson was last seen here early in March, according to information uncovered during the investigation. Coroner Dr. Gaus, of Essex county, declared the woman died, presumably in March.
The strongest proof of the time element was found in the presence of extra clothing found on the body, with additional protection against frost represented in the the presence of heavy toweling wrapped about the, torso and legs.
The girl was clothed in two pairs of stockings, two dresses, one of them a blue flowered Summer gown and the other a knitted dress, of green; the left hand bore two gloves and the body was wrapped in an imitation camel's hair coat. None of the clothing bore manufacturers' identification marks.
Handicapped by the condition of the body, the investigators were able to give only this description of the woman: She is four feet, eight inches tall; weighed slightly less than 100 pounds; the hair was probably chestnut, tinged with red; the teeth showed unusual care, with gold caps on the upper right jaw; the finger nails were carefully manicured. She was apparently between 20 and 30 years of age.
Gloversville police learned that the local woman had bridge work in the upper back teeth, the upper front teeth protruded slightly and her nose was slightly crooked. She had a needle, scar on second finger on the left hand.
The fact that the woman was warmly dressed and that the body was found less than an eighth of a mile from the highway tended to lend support to the theory that she met death while traveling along the trunk highway connecting Canada with the Metropolitan area.
The body, was discovered by Eugene W. DeLoag, who had gone to the woodlot owned by George U Brown about a mile, south of Elizabethtown to repair some fences. The body lay under a hemlock tree, a little to one side of a wood road about 125 rods west of the state highway. The body was apparently blanketed in snow until late in April.
Police here exhausted several leads yesterday in their efforts to learn more of the woman who resided here for a time. Anyone in the city who knows of her destination when she left the city, or of her whereabouts is asked to get in touch either with the Gloversville Police or the nearest state troopers.
From Oneonta last evening it was learned that Miss Duesler left her home there when her father, Winfield Duesler, re-married after her mother died. She is about 27 yeas old. She has an uncle named Murray Duesler, who resides in St. Johnsville and two aunts, Mrs. Martha Cool and Mrs. Eugene Burke, who reside on farms near that village.

 - Newspaper Article (Platsburgh Daily Press, NY, Saturday, May 9, 1931)
... According to the Associated Press the dead woman was not Mildred Duesler of Gloversville, the state police reported last night after checking descriptions. Gloversville police said the Duesler girl had been missing since early in March and had asked the check. ....

According to my father, Charles' mother hoped for a girl, whom she would have named "Margaret." When another boy appeared, she gave him just the middle initial M (sort of like Harry S. Truman). Charles came up with the name Marsdon because is sounded good to him.
Charles married Antoinette Whittier Webber (known as "Toni" by her friends and "Mye" by her family). She was born 20 Oct 1892 in Searsport, ME and died 9 Dec 1987 in Meriden, CT.  - Wedding Announcement (Fulton County Republican, Johnstown, NY, Thursday, June 21, 1894)
June is the ideal month tor weddings - nature flings broadcast her beauty and woman-kind can vie with the rose and lily in the splendor of their array. At least it was on Thursday evening, when the marriage of Miss Bertha Van Heusen to Frederick James Skinner, filled the Methodist church full to overflowing with eager and expectant guests. The first fore-shadowing of the beauty of the interior was a large table in the vestibule covered with ferns and flowers. The ushers received each guest; escorting them to the best places possible, and left them to listen to the pulsing of the organ and admiration of the chancel filled with plants and flowers until it made an ideal garden in the beautiful church. Directly over the chancel rail hung a bridal bell, composed of daises.
Many and varied were the beautiful toilets, and each received its meed of admiration as the wearers took their places. At last there was a lull in the music. The ushers drew the white ribbons down the aisles. The organist, Ernest Hodgee, struck the first notes of a wedding march and the bridal procession entered, the groom and minister, Rev. Mr. Washburne awaiting them at the chancel rail. Preceded by two ushers, came the little flower girls, Mabel and Bessie Getman, looking like bits of sunrise in pink, and yellow. Slowly up the aisle came the maid of honor, Amelia Gerrie, we would say of Brooklyn, but that Johnstown is a true mother and never forgets her children nor ceases to claim them. Miss Gerrie was dressed in a gown of white tulle illusion, or whatever it is; that looks airy and fragile as a cobweb on the summer grass; her bouquet of La France roses was tied with floating pink ribbons, making an effective bit of color against the white of her gown.
But the cynosure of all eyes was the bride—clad in white satin with the train, that makes the youngest and most girlish figure majestic, her veil covering but not concealing its beauty, and carrying a large bouquet of roses, she was led onward by her father, Mr. Van Heusen, a man of such fine appearance, as to be an addition to any scene where a fine physique and dignified carriage counts, as it does on such occasions. The remaining ushers brought up the rear. There was a silence that might be felt, as giving his daughter's hand into that of the young man so soon to be nearer her than all the world beside, Mr. Van Heusen stepped aside and the young couple knelt in silent prayer. The voice of the good minister broke the silence, and the impressive ceremony as furnished by the Episcopal church, or very nearly following it, was read.
There was no doubt of the sincerity of the response, "Frederick James took Bertha to be his wedded wife," proudly, joyfully, but with the tender solemnity befitting this, the holiest of the sacraments, and his bride answered a s clearly if not as bravely. The ring was blessed, the bride given away, and then, by the magic of a few words, Bertha Van Heusen, the young girl, was Mrs. Skinner. With the reverent tenderness that distinguished Mr. Skinner throughout the ceremony, he turned and kissed his bride, while in older eyes there stood a dewy moisture, and into hearts where romance had become a half forgotten dream there crept an assurance that here was a lover true to bride, as a knight of old.
Down the aisle came man and wife, the dainty little flower girls scattering the contents of their baskets in their path. Following them were the ushers: Edward Van Heusen , of Brooklyn: Will Austin, of Amsterdam; John Hutchinson, Frank Prindle, John Potter and George Vosburg. The father of the bridegroom, Mr. Skinner, and his daughter, Amy, were present
About 150 of the 600 guests that filled the church were invited to the house, where an Albany orchestra made sweet music. The house was beautifully decorated by Florist Aucock, the ladies of the church displaying their good taste in the arrangement of the church decorations. The building itself is beautiful and well suited for such occasions as that of last Thursday evening.
Upon reaching the home of Mr. and Mrs. Van Heusen, the young couple received the congratulations of their guests, who also paid their respects to Mr. and Mrs. Van Heusen, Mrs. Lucy McDonald, of Amsterdam, Mrs. C. E. Yates, of Lincoln, Neb., a sister of Mr. Van Heusen, and Mr. Skinner and daughter.
A bountiful repast was served, reflecting in all its appointments great credit on the caterer, Wright, of the Opera house. Later the bride and groom bade their friends good bye and started for a trip through the west and Canada, returning, they make their home at Gananoque, where the groom has a prosperous business.
The gifts were the usual beautiful display of sliver, glues, products of the brush and needle, and will be cherished as souvenirs of the old home and old friends, destined to grow dearer still as the years stretch on, and other ties grow stronger.
That the young couple may have all the happiness that can fall to the lot of mortals, Is the wish of the REPUBLICAN, as of a host of friends who follow them on their way with kind thoughts and earnest prayers, voiced in a hearty "God bless them."
There has perhaps never been a finer display of tasteful toilets. Among the ladies whose appearance caused a ripple of approval from the throng, was Mrs. John Getman, of Gloversville; Mrs. Yates, of Nebraska, in pale green, and Mrs. Van Heusen, the bride's mother. As to the young ladles, one might as well distinguish between the lily and the rose.
Mr. Jack Phin of Brantford, Ontario, officiated as best man.
The following were the guests from out of town: Ed. H. Van Heusen, Brooklyn; Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Chapman, Sylvester C. Skinner, Miss Amy Skinner, Gananoque, Ont.; Mrs. Lucy McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Austin, Mr. C. Wilber, Amsterdam; Mr. and Mrs. William Wiles, Mr. and Mrs. W. Cross, Miss Henrietta Cross, Fultonville; Misses Helen and Jennie Simpson and Luella Clark, Fonda; Warren Hall, Skaneateles; Mrs. C. E. Yates and son, Lincoln, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Filmore Getman, Mrs. Albert Putman, Carrie Sanford, Tribes Hill; Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Getman, Mr. Edward Getman, Gloversville.
Among the very many handsome and costly presents we noticed a beautiful Steinway piano from the groom and a check for $500 from Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Van Heusen.
