Mr. Hiram Snell, one of the early settlers of this community, passed away at Holdrege hospital Sunday, February; 26, 1939, at 10:50 P. M , following a brief illness. He was taken to the hospital Friday, but all that could be done by medical men proved no avail. He was born at Ephratah, Falcon [sic] County, New York, Feburary 7, 1856 and lived there during his young manhood. He was married to Miss Ella Montgomery on November 17, 1878 and soon after came to Nebraska, to make a home. He arrived here before the towns of Wilcox and, Holdrege were started. There was nothing but open prairie, with Kearney the nearest railroad point. He settled on a homestead which he still owned at his death, although it is now farmed by Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Erickson. The only stopping place at the time of his arrival was the Ball ranch.
Mr. Snell was a skilled carpenter and worked on many of the buildings in the community. His work carried him into many places, and won for him much appreciation. Among the many buildings he helped to erect was the Wilcox Methodist Episcopal Church, into which be was received as a member in 1911, by the Rev. M. L. Gardner, and where he retained his church membership until his death.
Mr. Snell was 83 years and 20 days of age when he passed away. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow; three children, Mrs. Wilbur Erickson, Alva Snell of Denver, and Mrs. Murna Johnson of Angola, Indiana; nine grand children, Lenora Erickson, Donald Erickson, Gilbert Erickson, the twins Elaine and Dewaine Erickson, Dale Snell, Doris Snell, Donald Johnson and Derrald Johnson; one great grandchild, Charles Erickson.
On November 17, 1938, Mr. and Mrs. Snell had the privilege of observing their 60th wedding anniversary.
The deceased had been associated with the growth of this community since its very start. He had seen good times and bad times come and go, but always gave his best efforts to his family and friends, who grieve greatly at his passing.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Wilcox, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 oclock. The Rev. R. M. Rohland, Pastor of the Community Church, and Rev. Samuel Mitchell, Pastor of the Wilcox Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated. Burial was in the Wilcox cemetery.
