 - Newspaper Article (The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Thursday, May 1, 1924)
A pitiful story of assistance that came too late was brought to light yesterday morning through the death of Herbert Johnson, aged veteran of the Civil War. During the past few months Johnson had been living in destitute circumstances at his home 412 West Clinton street.
The plight bf the aged veteran was brought to the attention of George A. Dorn who immediately applied to Congressman Crowther asking that Johnson's pension be increased from the allotment of $50 to $72 per month. Through the special effort of Congressman Crowther the relief measure was put through Congress in three weeks time. The relief would be available almost immediately.
Late Tuesday afternoon a telegram was received in Johnstown announcing that the measure had been passed and signed and that the check for the first increase was in the mail.
When the news of relief was first taken to the home, the messenger found Mr. Johnson in an unconscious condition, from which he never recovered to learn of the relief.
He was born October 15, 1841, in the town of Johnstown. At the time of the Civil War, he enlisted at Schenectady, August 8, 1864, as a private in Captain Henry C. Williams's company, 81st Regiment, New York State Volunteers, and received his honorable discharge January 14, 1865.
Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter, Cordelia Nellis, three grandchildren, all of this city. Funeral announcements will be made later.
