Late obituaries are none the less impressive and appreciative, but on the contrary are most conclusive evidenee of the highest respect, the dear and lasting remembrance of true affection and departed worth. Few characters are equally entitled to the love and admiration of mankind or the glorius tribute of post-humous praise, inspirinng the dearest and most sacred memories than the subject of this brief memoir.
Mrs. Mary Getman was born in the town of Sharon, Schoharie county, N. Y., on Feburary 2d, 1801. Her maiden name was Mary Vrooman, daughter of Tunis Vrooman, a worthy and respected farmer who removed with his family to Herktmer county when Mary was about sixteen years of age. About three years later she was married to Daniel Getman, of Columbia. Inheriting rare qualities of mind and body she was well equipped for the battle of life. Her ancestors were the owners and proprietors of that beautiful and valuable tract of country known as Vrooman's land. Her grandfather, Captain Teunis Vrooman, and his brother colonol Peter Vrooman, were among the first of patriots to wspouse the sence of liberty and independence in the dark days of the Revolution against the mother country. Her grandfather, Captain Teunis, was killed at the time of the invasion of Brandt and hois emissaries in 1780, and also his wife and youngest son.
TheVroomans were a sturdy and intelligent race, industrious, honest and true to their convictions. Throughout the fearful and bloody conflicts, the toils, and dangers, the sufferings and sacrifices for the sacred rights of man, none were more conspicuous for their patriotism, their bravery and fidelity to the glorious cause. Thus we see this noble woman was most naturally endowed with the great principles whic constitute the highest type of womanhood. For over thirty years she resided in Herkimer county, where her husband owned an managed a large farm and where she most faithfully fulfilled her duties as wife, mother and most vigilant guardian of the best interests of her family. Intelligent without presumption, industrious and frugal, yet kind and generous, benevolent without profligacy, with charity for all and malice toward none, useful labor to her was a pleasure, ever finding somethingto do for the hands as well as brain for the welfare of her family and friends. It has been truly said of her that by word and deed she never made a mortal enemy.
In religion she was a firm believer in the divinity and teachings, of our Saviour and united with the Lutheran Reform Church in her young womanhood and most faithfully adhered to her faith to the end. In the Spring of 1850, with her family, she removed from Herkimer county to Oswego county. One important lesson in the life of this woman which should not be omitted here is the fact that she never swerved from the inherent principles of her noble ancestry, but preserved and held sacred their motives. By her rare and extraordinary conditions of physical and mental power and their adaptation to eaoh other she was able to cope with obstacles which to others would have been impossible. Self-sacrificing often beyond the line of necessity for the good of her children she proved herself a worthy scion of that noble stock that pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to make a nation free. Her father was taken prisoner, together with his two older brothers, at the Invasion and massacre in Vrooman's land. The ages of these captives range from twelve to fifteen years, but the scenes of that most tragic event ware indelibly impressed upon their minds and was ever after an inspiring element of their noble and patriotic manhood.
For a minute account of that terrible orde3al we refer the reader to Sim's history of the boarder wars of New York, from which we take the following explanatory note: "The particulars relating to the destruction of Vrooman's land and the captivity of the citizens so minutely detailed there, obtained from Tunis, a son of Captain Tunis Vrooman, Josias E. and Bartholomew E., sons of Lieutenant Ephraim Vrooman, Maria, daughter of John Vrooman and afterwards the wife of Henry Frederick Mattice, who were captured at the time, the manuscript of Mrs. Susannnah Vanslyck, daughter of Samuel Vrooman, Angelica, daughter or Colonel Peter Vrooman, afterwards the wife of Major Peter Vrooman, Laurence Bouck and Laurenoe Mattice. We are thus particular in this reference to show the certainty of hereditary transmission in the formation of human character, and also as highly commendatory to the subject of this sketch in cherishing and preserving inviolate the great eternal principles of truth, love and justice, and faithful patriotic devotion, which actuated and inspired our heroic sires."
Mrs. Getman resided in the town of Palermo after 1850 in the discharge of every domestic duty until a short, time before her death, which occurred on March 10th, 1893, in the ninety-third year of her life. When the powers of her life began to weaken she was most tenderly relieved and cared for by her eldest son John Getman and her daughter Mary, who left nothing undone that might contribute to encourage and cheer their most faithful and affectionate mother. Mrs. Getman was the mother of twelve children, ten of whom survive her, most naturally to mourn her departure, but having cause to rejoice as great heirs in the glorious legacy she leaves, inspiring to emulate her virtues, to heed her precepts and imitate her example, to the end that they too may be also ready with brightest hopes to cross the silent river in peace and safety.
Biographies of the great and good are like seeds sown on genial soil whioh take root and produce fruits after their kind, inspiring to elevvate and broaden the nobelist humanity. No higher and more important duly than to chronicle and publish to the world such examples and characters and no earthly inheritance can claim a comparison.

The Argus, Albany, NY, Saturday Morning, December 14, 1889No. 145. Van Rensselaer Getman. as executor of Daniel Getman, appellant, agt. Alanson B. Ingersoll and Eleazer Rulison, impleaded, etc., respondents. Appeal from the judgment of the General Term. Fourth department, affirming with costs the judgment of the Oswego Special Term upon the report of a referee dismissing the complaint with costs, amounts to $65.32. In 1877, Thomas Delong and Elizabeth Delong, his wife, mortgaged thirty-seven acres of land in Oswego county to Benjamin Williams, to secure the payment of $300. In 1880, Williams assigned this mortgage to defendant. Ingersoll. In 1881. Ingersoll recovered against Delong a Justice Court judgment for $149.27, upon a note given by Delong to Ingersoll in 1879 for $125. The mortgage was foreclosed April 29, 1882, and on the sale a surplus of $16.25 arose. Delong. to whom this surplus belonged, then deeded five acres of land to Ingersoll in addition to this surplus, upon the consideration that the judgment on the note should be called seventy-five dollars, in February. 1884, judgment was put into execution against Getman for this seventy-five dollars. In March. 1884. Getman began this action to prevent the sale of Getman’s land, and alleging that the note had been paid and that Getman was the surety for Delong, and that Ingersoll had extended the time of payment to Delong without Getman’s consent. In 1885 Getman died and the present plaintiff was substituted. Argued by George B. Bradner for appellant, and Esek Cowen for respondents.

Samuel F. Mills, of the firm of Mills & Petrie bankers at Ashton died Friday night at the home of his nephew Albert Petrie of North Camden Road about five miles outside this village. He was born in Herkimer County, N Y June 21, 1831. His parents Loran A and Eve (Petrie) Mills were natives of the same place where they spent their entire lives and in which county they died. The father was a farmer by occupation. He was the fifth child of a family of 3 sons and 3 daughters. He remained on the home farm until 21 years of age when he went to Canada, where he spent one year engages in speculating and had much success. From there he went to DeKalb, Ill and engaged in the livery business for about 6 months when he sold out and moved to Ashton becoming interested in the pine and lumber business in 1858 which he was then joined by N.A. Petrie of Parish. They sold this business in 1865 and entered the mercantile business for 4 years than became interested in banking. They formed the Ashton National Bank. In 1888 Mr Mills built a handsome resident in Parish where he spends about half of his time and the remainder in Ashton. At a double wedding in 1879, Mr Mills married Miss Louise Getman of Palermo and Mr Petrie Miss Sara E Howard of Ashton. Mrs Petrie died in 1899 and Mrs Mills in 1911. Mr Mills was one of the chief founders of the village of Ashton, In 1889 the business part of the town was destroyed by fire and Mr Mills and Mr Petrie practically rebuilt the place and they are now owners of numerous stores and office buildings. A few years ago, Mills and Petrie purchased the plot ground nest to the Methodist church and erected a monument to the soldiers and sailors that entered in the Civil War from Parish. They built the Town library in 1922; the chime clock in the town in 1923 and a town gymnasium for Parish in 1925.
Mr Mills with Mr Petrie came to Parish early in the season to spend the summer with Mr Petrie's nephew, Albert who lives on the old Petrie homestead. He had been in unusual good health.
Burial was made in the Mills & Petrie Masoleum in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery.
