 - Newspaper Article (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, Thursday, August 5, 1920)
Fort Plain, Aug. 5. — Sumner Shults, who has been in the habit of going fishing up along the barge canal near tho lock, went as usual Tuesday soon after dinner. He did not return for supper and his mother then went next door, to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Walrath, asked them to walk along with her to the river to see if they could locate him. On arriving at tho canal lock Mrs. Shults learned from the men working there that they last saw Shults fishing about 2 o'clock. Search was then started up and down the river bank, but no trace of the man or his bait pail could be found. Some state troopers, who were in town, then started to search through the heavy weeds along the river. By this time it was dark and the Delco light system on an automobile owned by Vernon Houck, of this village, was taken to the barge canal bank. This had a long lead of wire and with an electric, light on the end they walked all through the bushes and along tho river. At the same time there were several with poles and hooks searching the canal near shore, but nothing could be located up until 2 a. m. Again Wednesday morning early several men with boats started searching the river from one side to the other. This was continued today, but up until noon he had not been located. Shult's brother, Frazier Shults of Pittsfield, Mass. was notified and arrived here Wednesday. Sumner is about 28 years old and is a son of Mrs. Alice Shults. He is subject to Epoleptic fits.
