South Columbia ... The death of our townsman Henry J. Helmer, last Wednesday after months of invalidism, recalls early Columbia history and happenings. His paternal ancestor Henry Helmer cleared land and erected his pioneer cabin and reared a family and was succeeded by his son Henry Jr., and his interesting family of sons and daughters. In after years he was succeeded by his son, the late William Helmer of Getman's Corners while Conrad, son of Henry Sr. erected and conducted the first hotel south of Dennison's. Conrad married successively two daughters of his neighbor, Conrad Getman and his wife Mary, daughter of Timothy Frank. His son Monroe married Mary Petrie a representative of the Petrie and Shoemaker families, and they were parents of the deceased and occupied the
home where four generations of this historic name have passed their lives and where the deceased has maintained the honor of his clan.

Oscar E. Shaul, aged 44, supervisor of the Town of Columbia, Herkimer county, committed suicide Thursday by blowing the top of his head off with a shotgun at his home in Columbia Center. He was a former principal of School No. 100 of Brooklyn.- Newspaper article (Ilion Citizen, NY, Friday, October 21, 1904)
The shocking death of Supervisor Ocar Shaul of the town of Columbia occurred at his home Thursday Oct. 20. Mr. Shaul has been of unsound mind for some years but was himself yesterday and went hunting with some neighbors; this morning he was in a highy excited condition; he walked up and down the road talking loudly; then he went into the house and took off all his clothing and went to the barn where he kept his gun: no one dared to foliow him; shortly afterwards a shot was heard: in a little time his cousin, Orvile Shaul arrived and said he was not afraid to go into the barn; there he found Oscar with the top of his head blown off.
Mr. Shaul was a man of fine qualiies: he was self made: he held a fine position in the schools at Flushing, L.I. until legislated out of office by the Greater New York charter: he then brought suit against the Board of Education and was given a judgment for $11,500; hard work in this position; drove him insane and indirecty caused his death. He was twice married, his seoond wife being Mis Hatie Brudder of Ilion.
