Those years were from eleven to seventeen years of age. He then took up contracting for the Remington Arms Company from 1863 to 1874. In 1877 he entered into partnership with C. W. Palmer. In their present enterprise, which has continued ever since, and their premises are double the capacity with which they started. Mr. Harter is a superior and enterprising business man and is well known throughout the county. He is a Mason, a member of the Blue Lodge and of the Veiled Prophets. In politics he is Democratic and active, but will not take office owing to the demand of his business upon his time. His people have been in America for generations. - Obituary (Find A Grave / Utica Herald-Dispatch Monday, March 15, 1915.) Herkimer March 15 - Smith C. Harter a native and life-long resident of Herkimer died at about 4:30 Saturday afternoon on North Prospect street after an extended period of ill health. Hiss wife who was Miss Cornelia Palmer, died last Fall. He was 72 years old and a son of Jacob P. and Mary Ann Palmer Harter, the family having been in America for many generations. From 1863 to 1874 the deceased took up contracting with the Remington Arms Company in Ilion. He entered into partnership in the hardware business with C. W, Palmer in 1877, this being continued under the name of C. W. Palmer & Co. Mr. Harter was a member of the Herkimer Lodge F. & A. M. and was vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church for several years. Mr. Harter was a man of high character, noted for his honesty and integrity and was highly esteemed by all. In politics he was a Democrat and took a keen interest in party affairs. He had served as village trustee. A brother, Howard Harter is the only near relative surviving. The funeral of Mr. Harter will be held to-morrow afternoon 2:30 o'clock from his late home in North Prospect street. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Herkimer - Mrs. Smith Harter of Herkimer passed away Sunday night aged 71 years. She has been an invalid for several years and a week ago suffered an accident by which she broke her hip and hastened the end. Mrs. Harter was a member of the Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband, two sisters and a brother, Alanson W. Palmer.
