SCHUYLER LAKE ... News was received of the sudden dea h of Howard Harter at Middleville, Herkimer county. He lived in this village at one time and conducted the creamery.
- Newspaper Article (The Times-Union, Albany, NY, Tuesday, February 9, 1926)
Herkimer—Howard Harter, forty-nine, an inmate of the county home, died suddenly from exposure, as the result of jumping into the West Canada creek's icy waters just west of Middleville. Dr. James W. Graves, coroner, states death was due to shock.
It is reported that Harter arrived it the county home December 10, from the town of German Flats, and since that time has been allowed to go and come from Middleville as he pleased. Sunday morning he went to that village and is reported to have acted queerly.
Assistant Superintendent C. Lewis was called to Middleville. On his arrival he found Harter around some bushes near the railroad track and creek. Upon noticing Lewis, Harter immediately ran away and, when he arrived at the creek's bank, he deliberately jumped into the water, which was about waist deep. Mr. Lewis jumped in after him, and it; was only after a hard struggle that he was able bring Harter's body ashore, because of the swift current. Mr. Lewis said Harter was still alive at that time, because he shook his head several times. He died on the way to the home.
Dr. Kelley of Middleville was summoned, but Harter was dead on his arrival. Harter was born in the town of South Columbia, son of Norman and Lottie Schuyler Harter. He has a brother living on the Richfield Springs road out of Mohawk.
