Marriage Notes for Lydia Elizabeth Hess and Nelson C Humes
- 50th Anniversary (The Syracuse Herald, NY, Saturday, May 6, 1911)
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson C. Humes of No. 132 Huron street celebrated their golden wedding yesterday.
Mr. Humes was born in Syracuse town on December 2d. 1836, before it became a city, and at the age of 25 years married Miss Lydia C. Hess of West Monroe, Oswego county. They have three children, Charles D. Humes, Mrs. Jennie Walker and William Humes, all living in Syracuse.
Mr. Humes's parents removed to Oswego county when he was 12 years old and the boy worked on a farm until he reached manhood, when he went into the manufacture of salt barrels and worked in the lumber business for several years. When the civil war broke out he enlisted in the One Hundred and Tenth regiment, New York State volunteers, and served for three years in the Army of the Gulf.
Mr. Humes remembers well when Philo Rust kept a hotel where the Syracuse Savings bank now stands and when Orcutt's candle factory stood where Greenway's brewery is now located. Across from that there was a large cemetery extending to the present Central depot.
Ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Humes removed from Oswego county to Syracuse. Since that time Mr. Humes has been actively employed up to last winter, when a stroke of paralysis rendered him unable to work.
