 - Newspaper Article (Richfield Springs Mercury, NY, Thursday, October 20, 1888)
Firemen's Parade. Last Saturday proved a beautiful day for the annual parade of the Richfield Springs Fire Department, and the event was the most successful in the history of the organization. At 11 o'clock the companies, led by the Salt Springville band, made a parade through the principal streets of the village. They then assembled in the Spring House park, where the ladies had provided a bountiful cotiatlon. At about two o'clock in the afternoon commenced the sports of the day. The first consisted of a race between Hose Cos. Nos. 1 and 2. The contest consisted of running 50 yards, laying 100 feet of hose, attaching to hydrant, uncoupling hose and attaching nozzle. No. 2 made the first run and couplings in 34 seconds. They were followed by No. 1, the latter doing the feat in 30 seconds. Both companies demonstrated the fact that they are in good condition for active service. Hook and Ladder, No. 1, gave an exhibition of running 50 yards, coupling and placing a ladder. The only accident of the day occurred then. The ladder carriage was over turned and landed on Mr. Alonzo Getman, but fortunately the rear end landed on the sidewalk, which prevented a probable fatal .accident. Mr. Getman was badly bruised, but no bones were broken, and his injuries -although painful, will lay him up but a short time. Mr. John Sitts also received a scalp wound. Both poles to the cart were broken. The last on the programme was a potato race, in which there were thirteen contestants. Thirteen rows of potatoes were laid down, there being thirty potatoes in each row, three feet apart. The contest was I to see who could pick up a row, one potato at a time, and put them in a basket the quickest, the prize being a five dollar gold piece. W. D. Shoemaker was the successful contestant, George Caney being second. The judges in the hose race were Messrs. T.R. Proctor, James Mason, and Rev. S. B. Ward. In the potato race, T. R. Proctor, Dr. N. Getman, Dr. F. E. Easton and F. E. Munger.

 - Obituary (The Otsego Farmer, Cooperstown, NY, March, undated, 1908)
Through the death of Alonzo Getman Richfield Springs suffers the loss of one of its oldest and most respected residents. Mr. Getman was a native of the Town of Columbia, Herkimer county, and was in early life one of that town's best farmers, and a most progressive citizen. Nearly forty years ago he came to Richfield Springs and engaged in mercantile business, in which he continued many years; and during these years he was among the foremost in any project for local improvement or progress. In politics he was an unswerving Republican; and was an active member of the Union League during the war of the rebellion. He was a member of Richfield Springs Masonic lodge, whose members had charge of the interment. His age was eighty-four years.

ELECTA A., wife of Alonzo Getman, died in Columbia, Herkimer county, on the 15th of November, 1852, aged 25 years.
Our dear sister was a woman of great patience and meekness, a careful mother, and an affectionate wife. She experienced religion about ten weeks before she died. She suffered much, but she suffered as a Christian. Her faith was firm in the promises of God, and when death came, she was found ready to go to her reward in heaven. She has left a husband and two dear little children, to mourn their loss. God grant that they may be prepared to meet her in heaven.

AWARDED O. D. GETMAN’S CAR
Richfield Springs Mercury
Thursday, January 26, 1927
Surrogate Decides Three sided Fight For Late Osborne Getman's Dodge Roadster - Powell Gets the Car.
The problems of Solomon were elementary as compared with those presented in a three-sided litigation Just decided by Surrogate Sheldon H. Close in a proceeding in the estate of Osborne D, Getman.
Mr. Getman and his mother, Hester Getman, lived together in the village of Richfield Springs. In the spring of 1924, Osborne procured from Almond C. Brockway a Dodge roadster, the transaction being the usual one of trading in the old car and paying the difference. The automobile was thereafter used by Osborne and his mother and kept at their residence. In the late fall of 1925. Mr. Getman and his mother being in ill health, prevailed upon William D. Powell and his wife who were neighbors, to leave their own house and move into the Getman residence, and board them. Osborne Getman died during the following May and his mother died in the month of June. After their deaths Mr. Powell claimed that he owned the automobile by .reason of an agreement made between himself and Hester and Osborne Getman to the effect that if he and his wife stayed there and boarded the Getmans as long as they lived, that the automobile was to be his.
Mrs. Grace Getman, the widow of Osborne Getman, and the administratrix of his estate, made a demand upon Powell, claiming that the automobile belonged to Osborne. This demand was refused, and she instituted a discovery proceeding in the Surrogate’s Court for the purpose of seeking to prove her contentions, and to get possession of the automobile.
After this proceeding was started, Mrs. Alice D. Burnett, of Alexandria Bay, N. Y., the sole legatee under the will of Hester Getman, asked leave and was permitted to intervene in the proceedings, claiming that the automobile belonged to Hester Getman, and therefore as sole legatee under the will, it was her property. The proceeding was tried before Surrogate Close at Cooperstown and a large number of witnesses were sworn by all parties. The Surrogate by his decision just rendered quotes at length from the testimony or Mrs. Emma Dorr of West Winfield, who was present when -the conversation between Powell and Mr. -and Mrs. Getman took place and testified as to what transpired.
The opinion of the Surrogate in part is as follows.
"This witness (Mrs. Dorr) seemed wholly disinterested, and am firmly of the belief that she related the conversation and surrounding conditions as they really were. I think it can be fairly adduced from the evidence that Mr. Powell complied with the conditions stated by Mr. Osborne D. Getman, and that it was the intention of both Osborne and his mother that the car should belong to Powell when they were though with it. Osborn Getman and Hester A. Getman bot apparently realized that owing to the age and infirmities of Mrs. Getman and the serious illness of Mr. Getman that they would not live long. Mr. Powell it appears, had been kindly to them and was a friend and neighbor. He was boarding them at their home at a rate of compensation that was remarkably reasonable in view of the surroundings. Osborne was separated from his wife. It was but natural that under all the circumstances they should desire Mr. Powell have the car, and it is manifestly just. -The registration papers and the key were delivered to him. The whole transaction took place in the presence of, and was participated in by Hester A. Getman. She confirmed her son's acts as well as what he said. Up to this time either Osborne or his mother was concededly the owner of the car. If it belonged to Osborne he clearly intended Powell should have it. If it belonged to Hester A. Getman, she, beyond question, approved of and agreed to the acts of Osborne D. Getman, and expressly so stated. It Is apparent that Osborne and his mother were in agreement that Powell should have the automobile. It is true that Osborne did not fill out a certain blank, neither did Powell, as it is contended should have been done in order to transfer titles. Under all the circumstances I do not regard this as essential. I do not think it was intended that Powell should become the absolute and unqualified owner of the car until he fulfilled the conditions stated. He having compiled therewith, he became, at the death of Osborne and his mother, the absolute and unqualified owner, and is, therefore, entitled to the automobile."
The various parties were represented on the trial as follows: Grace Getman, by Walter S. Eaton of Richfield Springs, with L. E. Walrath of Cooperstown as counsel; Alice D. Burnett, by J. D. Reed of Richfield Springs; William D. Powell by O. L. Van Horne of Cooperstown.

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, NY, January, undated, 1912)
Anna Amelia Getman, wife of H. E. Llewellyn, entered into eternal rest, at her home on Monticello St., Richfield Springs, N. Y., Jan. 2, 1912.
She was born October 9, 1840, on the old Getman homestead in Columbia, where she lived till her marriage on March 17, 1863 to Henry Eugene Llewellyn, and of this union seven children were born—two, Jennie and Charlie, having died in infancy, and five remained to cheer her in her last hours.
Her early married life was spent in the vicinity of Herkimer Co., moving later to Richfield Springs, where the remaining years of her well-spent life were passed. She leaves to deeply mourn the loss of a loving wife and most devoted mother, a husband, one son, Frank, and four daughters, Mrs. H. E. Schooley, Mrs. Henry D. Lane and Mae Llewellyn of Richfield Springs, and Mrs. Herbert W. Fitch of Mohawk, also eleven grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Delos Getman and J. F. Getman of this place, and two elder sisters, Mrs. L. A. Vosburgh of White Plains, and Mrs. A. E. Griffin of Mount Kisco, N. Y.
Her funeral was held privately from the home on Saturday, Jan. 6, Rev. W. P. Francisco officiating. Her's was a life of service and sacrifice for others, and spent quietly within the sacred walk of home, and "Never a day so hurried, with all her hands found to do that the least appeal to mother, found not a helper true."
The following lines express in a small measure the feeling of deep sorrow in the home, where now the silver cord is broken, and the guiding star has faded from view only to shine brighter and nearer in the eternal heavens, to point the fray to her loved ones when they with her
 Shall meet beyond the river,
Where the surges cease to roll,
Where in all the bright forerer,
Sorrow ne'er shall press the soul.

Oh, can it be, dear mother,
That we shall hear no more,
 Thy pleasant voice of greeting,
As in the days of yore ?

Thy heart that beat to loving,
  For husband and children dear,
Has lost its wealth of kindnes,
 How tsad all things appear.

Eith sobing hearts we laid her,
 Within the lowly grave,
We mourn for her most deeply,
 Who from us passed away.

But the Reaper in the Valley,
 Spares neither young nor old,
 He cometh to the lowly,
 And onto those with gold.

We mourn the loved lost treasure,
And Shed most bitter tears,
We'll miss so much her presence,
 Through all the coming years.

Though we have lost a jewel,
  That earth cannot restore,
We hope again to find it,
 Where partings are no more.
