Former Frankfort Resident Writes of Ice Jams of Old in Moyer Creek
(From Herkimer, N. Y., Telegram, Feb. 23, 1935)
Frankfort- Rev. Henry I. Getman of Florida City, a former Herkimer county resident who keeps in touch with local happenings here through the Telegram-Record, has written in conment on the account of the ice jam, this winter in the streams in this vicinity, which appeared in a recent issue. Mr. Getman is a native of Frankfort and a member of the graduating class from the Ilion Academy which celebrated its 50th anniversary a few years ago. He was particularly interested in the Moyer Creek writeup, both of the ice jam and the swimming pool it is proposed to construct in Lehman Park, and was inspired to write the following:
"My grandfather settled on your bank when a young man. My father never left you during all the 75 years of his life. I was born and brought up within 50 feet of your waters. I do not believe that you have ever been reconciled to the change made in your course through Frankfort village in the early days, for you never missed even the slightest opportunity of running over your man made banks and taking your old course, in spite of the discomfort you brought to those who had homes located in your old channel. There are now no dams or ponds along your course to be damaged by your flood waters. You have gotten to be a lazy stream, having found it easier to supply Frankfort with drinking water than to turn five water wheels to saw lumber, make wheel barrows, grind corn and cut matches, in the factories and mills along your banks in early days.
"I have a grouch against you, Moyer creek, because of the fences you made me build and repair, and the stones you made me pick up. Twice I came near-drowning in your waters. But then! I must not be too severe with you, old creek; you were the first stream of water I ever saw and our old mill pond the first body of water I ever saw, and on it I went to sea on a slab raft. As a boy I learned to swim in you and learned to skate on your ice, and had a lot of sport both in and on you. It was to you our cows went to water their milk. While you took your time to do it in, you dug a gorge through the hills with beauty spots in it that I never tired looking at as a boy or later when a man.
"And now old creek, when that 250x80 feet swimming pool is made with stone from an old Erie Canal lock it will be easy for you to drop into it and furnish comfort and refreshment to many, young and old. And perhaps in this lighter work of contributing to bodily health, keeping the lawns green quenching an occasional fire, you will be doing a service for man equal to that you did through the years of your hard labor.
"So we great you Moyer creek: And may your waters never cease to flow."

Died, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. Medd, in Tomah, Wednesday, March 6th, 1901, Mrs. Elizabeth Fryer, in the 78th year of her age.
Elizabeth Getman, daughter of Peter and Barbara Getman, was born in Columbia, Herkimer County, New York, Aug. 20, 1823. She was married to Mr. John Fryer Sept. 1st, 1844. Soon after their marriage they turned their eyes to the then new west, stopping first at Troy, this state, then at Baraboo; and in 1855 with three children they located in what is now LaGrange township, near Tomah. At once they began to carve out a home, first for temporary use erecting a log shanty and later a more comfortable log home. They were compelled to undergo the many hardships of frontier life such as were incident to this country in an early day, going long distances to mill and for such articles of merchandise as were needed, until Tomah had reached such magnitude as to demand a store.
In July, 1884, Mrs. Fryer met the great bereavement of life in the loss of her husband, a devout Christian and staunch member of the M.E. church for 40 years. Mr. And Mrs. Fryer were the parents of six children. The oldest, Harvey, died in 1860. The remaining children, all present at the funeral, are Mrs. Sarah Hanchett, of Shelby, Mich.; Mrs. Libbie Medd, Tomah, Wis.; Mrs. Lettie McMullen, Marshfield, Wis.; Mrs. Clara Calkins, Washburn, Wis.; Mr. W. S. Fryer, Tomah, Wis. Mrs. Fryer also has one sister living, Mrs. Fred Wise, of Tomah, Wis.
For the past nine years Mrs. Fryer has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Medd. At 18 years of age she was converted. The church record of the local church here has always since the founding of the organization contained her name. Her memory went back to Methodism’s first pastor in Tomah, Mr. Jno. Holt, who preached here in 1856. Mrs. Fryer has ever shown to the world a God fearing, devout Christian character. She was extremely loyal and liberal to the church of her choice. With her demise our loss can only be compensated by the memory of a grand life, well lived. Heaven is the richer.
The funeral was conducted according to plans arranged by the deceased long before her death. It was held Sunday afternoon, March 19th, from the home, Rev. C.E. Butters using the text that Mrs. Fryer had chosen, Ps. 23:4. The choir sang selections chosen also by the deceased. The remains were laid to rest in the Tomah cemetery beside those of her beloved husband.”

OBITUARY
After a long illness and an acute suffering for a period of five weeks, Mrs. Clara E. Getman, one of Tomah’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, was called to her eternal home, her reward for a useful and well spent life.
Clara E. English was born near Tomah on November 2, 1857. She grew to womanhood on the parental farm and was then married to Hiram Getman. She and her husband lived the greater part of their married life on their farm about two miles north of Tomah, which place is now part of the government Indian school property.
Mr. Getman died in 1898. A short time later Mrs. Getman sold her farm to the government and then moved to Tomah, where she has since resided on 314 East Holton street until her death which occurred early Saturday morning, April 10, 1920.
Mrs. Getman was an example of true womanhood, a loving mother, and a kind and obliging neighbor. She leaves an immense circle of friends and will be sadly mourned by all who knew her for her hearty greeting, her benevolent ways and her helping hand ever ready to aid and serve others have left dear remembrances which will never be forgotten. The large funeral and profuse floral offerings testify to the high esteem in which she was held by all.
Two children preceded her to the great beyond: Frank, who died January 13, 1908, and Mrs. Edith Sherwood, who died April 20, 1917. Four children survive: Mrs. Ernest Johnson and Miss Ethel Getman of Tomah; Harry W. Getman of Iowa City, Iowa; and Robert H. Getman of Davenport, Iowa, all of whom shall always retain a sacred memory of their mother.
Out-of-town relatives who were present at the funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. R.H. Getman and Mr. And Mrs. H.W. Getman of Iowa, a brother, William English of Merrill, Wisconsin, a sister, Mrs. Ida Kinmore of Tracy, Minnesota, a brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph Fleishman of Abbotsford and two cousins, Mr. And Mrs. A. Holgate of Mauston.***

"KILLED BY LIVE WIRE
Tomah Young Man Loses Life While Working on the Wires – Buried here Wednesday
News of the death of Mr. Frank Gettman was telegraphed to his mother on Jan. 14th. The young man, well known in this vicinity, was working on a telephone line out from Madison, Ill., the day before when in the performance of his duty a line he was working with was let sag and came in contact with a high potential wire and he was instantly killed. On account of his safety, a belt fastened about his body and also to the pole, he was left in a hanging position from which a comrade rescued him.
Mr. Frank Gettman, son of Mrs. Hiram Gettman, was born near Tomah Oct. 12, 1884. This city and vicinity was his home, here he obtained his schooling, here he made everybody his friend, and here he was highly respected by all. Some three months ago he began working for the Long Distance Telephone Co. and it was in the performance of his duty that his end came. He leaves a mother, two brothers Harry and Robert, and three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Johnson, Ethel and Edith.
The remains were brought to Tomah and the services held from the M.E. church on Thursday afternoon, Rev. C.E. Butters officiating. The church was taxed to its utmost capacity by the many friends and relatives. The interment was in Tomah’s cemetery."
- [The spelling of “Gettman” in the obituary is incorrect. The family spelling was “Getman.” Frank was my great great grandmother’s brother’s son. He is buried in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin, along side of his parents (Hiram and Clara) and siblings Ruby, Ethel, Nellie and Edith. His headstone carries the epitaph “Sleep On Brother Thy Work Is Done.”]

Ottie Edick, a boy of eleven years of age, whose father, N. Edick, lives four miles northwest of Garfield, was accidentally shot and killed by his fourteen-year-old brother while out hunting last Monday. We have been unable to learn any of the particulars further than that the two boys were out hunting at the time the accident occurred. Is should serve as a warning, but will probably go unheeded by other boys, and such frightful accidents will continue to occur.

A sad accident, resulting in death, occurred Monday. Mr. Edick's two youngest sons, aged about twelve and fourteen, were out hunting, having but one gun between them. By some means, the elder shot the younger through the body, the gun being only a few feet from his breast at the time. The charge entered at a single hole and came out in three places. He was unconscious and lived but a short time. It was indeed a sad accident and Mr. Edick's people have the sympathy of all.
