HALF CENTURY OF BUSINESS
Some Old Hudson Firms Which Are Still Energetic.

R. Gray's Sons.
This house, stared originally nearly across the street from its present site in 1841 as Ingersoll & Gray, afterwards became celebrated through the business acumen of Rensselaer Gray, the father of the present firm. Gradually the house extended its different branches until to-day under the management of W. I. and Arthur S. Gray, it ranks as one of the leading department stores in this section of the state. The building itself is one of the show places of Hudson. When the row of buildings, including Gray's store was burned down, the firm made preparations to eclipse anything of the kind in its line in this vicinity and well has it done this work. Five stories high and 60x120 feet, it is filled with a magnificent stock of goods, so that it is not only a landmark of Hudson business fifty years ago, but a fine sample of modern progress.

 - Obituary (The Hudson Evening Register, Friday, July 28, 1916)
Miss Helen Ingersoll Gray, daughter of Mrs. Van Rensselaer Gray, died at 6:30 o'clock this morning, at her home, 342 Allen street. For the past month the deceased suffered a general decline and about a week ago was forced to keep to her bed. All that medical attention and loving care could accomplish was resorted to, but her physical being would not respond and she passed away this morning mourned by fond relatives and a host of friends.
Miss Gray was born in this city and has resided here all her life. She was a young woman of sterling character, whose bright smile and thoughtful deeds made friends everywhere. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city, where she was a faithful attendant, and much interested in the church work. Always ready to say good words for everyone, she was truly a noble Christian and her loss will be keenly felt by all who knew her.
Standing out in the life of Miss Gray was the life service which she rendered in the home. It seemed to those who knew her well, that there was sacred dedication made by her in this respect. To an invalid mother and brother she had ministered for thinking never of self, but only what she could to help and comfort those about her. Her life was one of devotion to the home and of self-sacrificing interest to those nearest and dearest to her. Love and service was exemplified in the highest sense byher and ever with a patience and courage that seemed to make light of the care which she rendered so faithfully.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Van Rensselaer Gray, two sisters, Mrs. James Moore and Mrs. H. D. Van Vlec, and two brothers, Arthur and William I. Gray, all of this city.
The funeral will bo held from her late home on Monday afternoon.

Wayne, I just was in touch with my Aunt and just a few weeks ago she found out that we are not in the blood line of Getman. Below is the info she received. This, while I am not happy to find out is something you as the Getman Historian could use. If you or anyone in through your network could shed some light on this I would be grateful.
Kevin Gompers
As you know, I've been doing some genealogical work on my adoptive and my biological family.
I received a document today that confirms what I thought I already knew regarding the Getman family.
The Document I received was a deposition of Charles F. Getman (a/k/a Uncle Charlie) taken in 1894 in furtherance of litigation regarding a dispute that Uncle Charlie filed against the administrator of his Grandfather's, Van Rensaeleer Getman's, estate in Bowling Green, Ohio. Neither Charlie, nor his father, Charles J. Getman, were named in Van Resaeleer's will, though Van Rensaeleer left money to his nieces and nephews. Apparently, Uncle Charlie, as grandson, was unhappy about that.
In the deposition, Uncle Charlie states that his father died when he was about three years old of smallpox. Uncle Charlie was born in 1866 and I know that Charles J. Getman was alive in April 1872 because I have a bank deposit record from that year. There is no doubt that Chalres J. Getman died young, however, and it is likely that he died in 1872 as that is the last record I have of him. The other interesting thing is that, tonight, Mom and I went through a box of old photographs and were able to identify Uncle Charlie as a child along with Emily Josephine Getman (nee O'Bryan) and his father Charles J. Getman in some of the oldest tintype photos. What was truly amazing to me is that Uncle Charlie recalls that his father wore "checkered" trousers (fashionable, at the time, along with striped trousers with a frock coat) and sure enough the tintype we have shows his father in checkered trousers - I suppose it's likely that the tintype image embedded in Uncle Charlie's mind as an actual memory instead of a memory of the photograph. Additionally I found a photo that is almost certainly Van Rensaeleer Getman. These are, undoubtedly, old photos that you've all seen and which we've had for years, but I was able to contextually put them together based on what I know about times, dates, and places based on the genealogical research I've done.
What becomes problematic, however, is that Uncle Charlie states, in the deposition, that he is the only child of Emily Josephine Getman and Charles J. Getman, and then goes on to say that he has a half-brother through a remarriage by his mother. This half brother would be Harold Carrington Getman - the father of grandma and Uncle Norman. Based on this it is clear that Harold is not a Getman (and hence, neither was grandma nor Uncle Norm).
Charles J. Getman likely dies in 1872. Harold Carrington Getman was born in 1885. Though, not definitive, I can find no subsequent marriage record for Emily Josephine Getman - and if Emily had been remarried when she had Harrold, why wouldn't Harold have the surname name of his rightful father? I surmise it's because she was, in fact, not married to his father.
Mom has a piece of paper allegedly sewn into a piece of Uncle Charlie's clothes, it has writing in pencil which states "Harold Ferdinand Hetchel May 9, 1885." That's all it says - and that is exactly Harold Carrington Getman's birthday. The ONLY record that I could find on a Hetchel with this birthdate was for a Ferdinand Hetchel, born May 9, 1885, who was christened in Manhattan, New York and whose father is a James Nelson Hetchel and whose mother is Emily Hetchel (thus first name of the mother matches) (). It may be that they both claimed to be married in order to have the baby christened. It should also be noted that if this is the James Nelson Hetchel, I think it is, based on census records he would be approximately 21 to 23 years old and Emily Josephine would be approximately 39 - in fact, James Nelson Hetchel would be only slightly older (about 3 years) than Emily's oldest son, Uncle Charlie. I have found records of a James Nelson Hetchel and he was a silversmith, got married twice, and had children - but never listed a child (other than in the baptismal record) named Ferdinand or Harold.
There is a photograph on Uncle Charlie and Harold Getman together and they are very much unlike each other, physically. As with Uncle Norman, Harold was relatively tall. Of minor import, but some interest, in the WWI draft registration records for James Hetchel's son, by another marriage, his son is described as "Tall" and "Slender" - like Uncle Norman, but not like Uncle Charlie, who was short (5' 4") and stout.
So, the short story is - it appears you have no Getmans in your line. I'm working on Hetchel, but, as one might expect, he seems to be a bit slippery. Your Great Grandfather was a bastard, literally
