Oswego Palladium, August 28.
Jacob L. Getman, of Palermo, Oswego county, recently deceased, was one of the wealthiest and most prominent farmers and dairymen in Oswego county, and was very generally known throughout the country. He loft ono daughter, Mary Getman, now aged about 18, upon whom during his life and since his death every possible comfort and luxury that could tend to make her an accomplished woman has been expended. She has had the best educational advantages, and is said to be quite accomplished in music, and has graduated or is about to graduate from a western college. She is described as tall, handsome, and of fine carriage. The position looked forward for such a daughter can be imagined.
There has been on the Getman place this summer, as hired man, a follow named Wellwood, of low origin, very rough and ordinary appearance, no means, and being a more farm laborer of the commonest typo. Miss Getman has been spending a summer vacation at home, and Wellwood has been, it is said, sort of assigned to her protection, doing the ordinary work of an attendant in driving her out to such places as she wanted to visit, etc. A few days ago he drove her to Fulton, and when they returned informed Mrs. Getman that they had been married. The young woman, with many tears and a seeming realization of the future which she had sacrificed, admitted it, and upon still further investigation it was found to be true. Mrs. Getman was prostrated with grief and mortification, but, finding that a legal marriage has taken place, has found it necessary to accept the situation and make the best of it. The affair has been the talk of the whole country round about, and there are not a few cruel enough to rejoice at the girl's unhappy alliance, and which it is believed was made in a foolish moment and to her present great regret. It is thought that Wellwood, who has been in the girl's company a good deal for some months, has carefully devoted himself to acquiring an influence over her with a shrewd view to his marriage.

- Rhoda was identified as the wife of Norman Cook during the 1900 census. The Article below indicates that this was not correct. The were married in 1912.- Newspaper Article (Ilion Citizen, NY, Thursday, June 3, 1909)
Rhoda L. Hollum has brought a Supreme Court action against Norman L. Cook, the missing Highway Commissioner, for the sum of $936 and interest from the 24th of May, 1909. The plaintiff alleges that she had been employed by Cook for the past 6 years and that he owes her 312 week's wages at the rate of $3 a week. In the affidavit made by the plaintiff's statements are made that throw more light on the disappearance of Cook and Mrs. John Sopengrayer, or Guyer from this village together. The affidavit states that Cook left his home on the afternoon of May 18, telling Mrs. Hollum that he was going to a Masonicc meeting at Dolgeville with other masons from Mohawk and that she afterwards learned that no such meeting was held. Mrs. Hollum charges that Cook left the state with the intention of defrauding his creditors and that he took nearly $1,000 worth of property with him which he gathered from diffeent [sic] scources. She swears that Cook was seen a number of times at the residence of Mrs. Guyer two miles from Cook's home and that the two were seen together a number of times. Mrs. Hollum found that Cook bought a ticket at Utica for Chicago and that a ticket for the same place was sold to a woman answering Mrs. Guyer's description at the same time Cook bought his ticket. She says Cook showed her a forged receipt for $100 which he asserted he paid E. M. Wright for real estate last February and that during the last three months many people to whom Cook owed money demanded payment and that he put them off at times when he had from two to three hundred dollars in his pockets. In addition to her own claim Mrs. Hollim brings suit for $92.63 alleged to be due her son. James Hollum and for $130 alleged to be due, Delvs [Delos] Getman by Cook and which account Mrs. Hollum purchased from Getman. Charles Bell is her attorney. From the facts stated in the affidavit of Mrs. Hollum it is apparent that Cook has been making careful preparation for his departure for several months and that the flight of Mrs. Guyer was also premeditated.- Obituary (Herkimer Citizen, NY, September 17, 1918)

CHARLES HUTTON GETMAN
It is seldom that the Palladium is called upon to chronicle a sadder death, bringing greater sorrow to friends and acquaintences than that of Charles H. Getman, which occurred suddely at the home of the Hon. John C. Churchill, No. 118 West Fourth street, about ten o'clock this morning. Heart disease, or tecnically speaking, angina pectoris, was the cause of death, which was to his wife, who cmae with him, and to the family of Judge Churchill as unexpected as would be a thunder clap from a clear sky.
Mr. Getman's home since 1887, when he removed fromn this city, has been at Stamford, Conn., and he was visiting with his wife the family of Judge Churchill when death claimed him. For some weeks Mr. Getman has been unwell and at times, especially when any degree excited, suffered with pains in the region of his heart which made his breathing rather labored. At the advice of his family physician Mr. Getman, some weeks since, left his business to visit in the western part of this State and to obtain a needed rest. Last Friday he came to Oswego to spend a few days, perhaps three or four, at Judge Churchill's and to renew his acquaintance of twehnty years here. He was apparently in good healt last night, going out to the theatre and this morning when he breakfasted at 8:30 o'clock he chatted pleasently and seemed to be feeling particurally well. After breakfast Mr. Getman went to his room and was there for some time, when shortly before ten o'clock his wife entered. He was seated upon a lounge and complained of the old pains near his heart. As his suffering was greater than during any previous attack, Dr. J. H, Keeney was hurredly summoned, but before he could reach Mr. Getman he has swooned and passed away. The shock of the death was terrible to his wife and to Judge Churchills's family.
When news spread that Charles Hutton Getman, for twenty years a prominent commercial figure in Oswego, had died suddenly, there was a general expression of regret and unfrigned surrow. Mr. Getman was born in Troy, N.Y. about fifty-five years ago and spent his youth and early manhood in that city. His education was obtained at the Troy High school and in Boston. He began his business life, which later proved so successful, with the lumber firm of Foreman & Company, of Troy, and mastered it's every detail. In 1876 he came to Oswego. Fourteen years previous he had married Miss Alice Penke, of Cohoes, and their only child, Fred H. Getman, now associated with his late father's lumber firm at Stamford, was born here in 1877. Mr. Getman while in Oswego was at one time the head of Getman, Boyd & Company, Mr. Irwin, of Peterboro, Ontario, being the silent partner, but later was alone in the business of buying and selling lumber. The familiarly know Getman docks at the foot of West First street were owned by him while he was in business here. In 1887, having formed a lucrative connection with the lumber firm now known as Getman, Judd & Company, of Stamford, Mr. Getman moved thither and continued as a member of the combination until his death. His insight into the details and generalities of the lumber business served the firm well, and as it's head he built it up to be one of the largest in the New England States.
The surviving and sorrowing family are Mrs. Getman, Fred H., the son and two brothers, Edward and Webb. During most of his residence here Mr. Getman was organist of Grace church. He was an amateur musician of most excellent taste and a devoted lover and student of the art of musdic. His marked characteristics were high probity, earnest and intelegent devotion to business, love of family, loyalty to frineds, ernestness and activity in all life's duties, kindly, charitable and generous, without fear and without reproach. Only those who knew him best were able to truly estimate his sterling worth. The body will be taken to Albany, probably to-morrow for burial.- Death Announcement (Rome Daily Sentinel, NY, October 12, 1897)

E. M. Getman was born in Troy April 6, 1844, the third son of Charles and Chloe Hutton Getman. In 1846 the family moved to Watervllet, then West Troy. His schooling was obtained from the district school In the village, and was limited and irregular. At seventeen he took a clerkship in the Watervllet arsenal, resigning December 31, 1864. While there he received promotion. He was one of the two persons who laid the trains blowing up buildings in Troy in the great fire of 1862, thus saving other valuable property. In 1863 he was sent as special messenger with a large train of cars filled with munitions of war to Louisville, Ky., for General Buell in the memorable Buell and Bragg race into Kentucky for supplies. January, 1865, he moved to Kentucky and aided in the organisation of the Louisville City National Bank, accepting the lowest position, and by close attention to business was promoted rapidly filling all the desks in their regular order. As an expert he was called by the mayor to examine the sinking fund of said city and at a subsequent period waa requested to examine the water works of said city, a property of $7,000,000 value and owned by the city.
In February, 1878. at the request of Secretary B. H. Bristow, General John M. Harlan (now on the Supreme bench at Washington, D. C ), and Hon. Martin I. Townsend of Troy, he was appointed a national bank examiner for Kentucky; Tennessee and part of West Virginia were added to his charge late in 1378. In 1879 he was ordered to New Orleans during a panic and suspensions there, rendering valuable service. An official trip through Texas and Arkansas followed. He was then made the special examiner at large for the central West, and on critical cases was sent into Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, at the same time giving proper attention to his original district. He was detailed for special duty twice In New York city, three months at one time and six months the other. In 1884 his acumen and ability prevented a probable financial disaster in this city. In 1886 he was transferred to this state and assigned from Buffalo to New York on the southern tier of counties, and after fourteen years of this delicate and responsible service he resigned, in December, 1892. He has been engaged In the lumber business since.
His father was a Whig, Joining the Republican party at its organisation. He together with his four sons have always been stanch Republicans. The subject of this brief sketch has been an unswerving Republican, casting his first vote in Kentucky for the martyred Lincoln, when it meant ostracism. He is in direct line from John Frederick Getman, who came from Germany in 1720, whose issue was four sons and one daughter. All the sons rendered service in the colonial army under Sir William Johnson. The grandson George also had four sons and one daughter. All four sons were soldiers in the Revolution. One of these sons, George, and the great-grandfather of E. M., had six sons and one daughter; all the sons were soldiers In the war of 1812.
In the late war were two sons of Charles Getman who were at the Watervllet arsenal, another was on special service up the Yasoo river to General Grant, rendering aid to the government. Mr. Getman's father was canal collector one term; his brother Charles was a member of the last Connecticut Legislature, and E. M. national bank examiner, which are the only public offices ever held by the family.
This nomination sought him, and if elected his best efforts will be to give the new city of Watervllet an able administration.
