From the time he became a voter he was interested in politics and for years was a member of the Democratic party, which he continued to support until free silver became a national issue. He was so strongly opposed to that issue that he changed his politics and joined the Republican ranks, in which he had since remained, with the exception of a brief time when he followed the late Theodore Roosevelt. He was a firm believer in the principles of the late President and always supported him. When the late Grover Cleveland was President, he held the office of postmaster in the town of Columbia. He also had held the office of Justice of the peace in that town. Since his residence here, he was recognized as an honorable, worthy and upright citizen. His word was always respected and honored. In 1909, he was named as candidate for president of the village and was elected and the year that he served was filled with activities of benefit to the village. Before coming to Ilion, he was an ardent member of the Reformed Church of the town of Columbia and held the office of elder and was also the superintendent of the Sunday school of the same church. Since coming here be had been greatly interested in the Presbyterian Church and all matters pertaining to that body. He was a trustee of the church. Ha was a member of Ilion Lodge, No. 591. F. & A. M. Mr. Getman was a man who was at all times interested in the affairs of the village and willing and anxious to lend his help in every way for the betterment and welfare of the community. He was a member of the Ilion Board of Trade and was a director in the Manufacturers National Bank.
His wife, whose maiden name was Clara M. Burrill, and whom he married in 1871, died five years ago last October. Parent of Mariaville, Mrs. B. J. Oxner of Columbia, Mrs. J. W. Getman of Columbia and Ina, George B. and Clarence S. of Ilion.
Universal sympathy is extended to the afflicted family in their affliction. The high regard in which Mrs. Getman was held has found repeated expression on every lip and all tender their sincere condolences in the heavy grief which has fallen on the husbend and sons, It is one of the amenities of life's griefs that in such circumstances the community is one large family and the grief on one is the sorrow of all.
