Frankfort, Oct. 29 —This community was greatly shocked yesterday afternoon when it became known that Madison P. Whitney, a familiar figure on our streets, had been killed at the West Shore station. Mr. Whitney was at his home yesterday and after taking dinner left to go to the business part of the village. Instead of going by the public highway over Sheldon avenue, where he resided, and Railroad street, he went over the rear part of his premises and started to cross the West Shore tracks nearly opposite the station. He had crossed the side tracks ahd had just stepped on track No., 1, east bound, when he was struck by the engine attached to train No. 18. His head came in contact
with the. bumping beam and was badly cut and the skull broken, and he was instantly killed. Mr. Whitney was bom in the town of German Flatts 63 years ago and was a son of the late Cole M. and Catharine Whitney, well known residents of that town. In July, 1861, he married Sarah E. Clark at Hartford. Conn., and soon thereafter enlisted in Co. A., 5th Connecticut Regiment Volunteers, served four years, was honorably discharged, and at once reenlisted in the same regiment and remained until the close of the war. He was a true and loyal soldier and was never known to shirk a duty or fail to answer a call. He has been a resident of this village for over twenty years, during which time he has been an employe of the Remington Arms Co. at Ilion. He leaves a widow and eight children: Mrs. P. A. Newberth and Mrs. R. L. Deming ot Middletown, Conn.: Mrs. W. H. Borst of Syracuse: Flora W. Madison, P. L. Starkey and S. Elisabeth of Frankfort, and Mrs. Charles Sharp of St. Thomas, Ont. The funeral service will be held from the late home of the deceased on Friday forenoon. The interment will be made in Oak View cemetery

- 1910 census, Frankfort, Herkimer, NY, (East Main St) fam # 59 - Living with her son-in-law Clarence Shocraft.- Obituary (Utica Daily Press, NY, Thursday, January 23, 1913)
The passing of Sarah - Whitney, widow of Madison P. Whitney, at her home, 128 Webster Avenue, East Syracuse about 10 o'clock marks another vacancy .... of those wives who accompanied their soldier husbands to the South during the War of the Rebellion, and stood side by side with them in the horrors of the battlefield. Mrs. Whitney was numbered among them, and the news of her death will bring regret to many, especially residents of the villages of Ilion and Frankfort, where she lived a greater share of her life.
Sarah Clark was born in Middletown, Conn. April 4, 1842, and received her education there. Her father was Wayne Clark. She was married to Madison P Whitney, then an employee of the Colts' Arms Company of Hartford, Conn. July 24, 1861, and four days later watched her husband march away to the arena of war at the head of his company in the Connecticut Infantry. Whitney sent for his young wife, and she remained in the Southern States until nearly the end of the war. Later Mr. Whitney worked for many years for the Remington Arms Company and lived in Ilion. Still later the couple lived in Frankfort for many years.
Mr. Whitney died in 1906 [sic] and in 1910 Mrs. Whitney moved from Frankfort to Utica where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Shoecraft, of 128 Webster Avenue. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. P. A. Newberth, Middletown, Conn.; Katherine M. Borst of Syracuse; Miss Flora Whitney, Frankfort; Mrs. B. L. Demming, Williamantic, Conn.; Mrs. E. J. Van Wagnen, Utica; Madis P. Whitney, Syracuse; L. W. Whitney, Fiskdale, Mass. Those who knew Mrs. Whitney appreciated her rare qualities at their tue worth and her death will be regretted by the many who deemed it a privilege to call her "friend".

Waterville - Warren W. Getman, a milkman about 65 years old, died suddenly yesterday morning while making his rounds. The most severe storm of the season was blowing in this section. It began Sunday and blowing from the south then from the west, drifted many roads and streets. Mr. Getman's death is believed to have been due to over exertion caused by his struggle with the storm.
