Philip Barringer died Friday evening, Dec. 22; aged seventy four. Judge John Fitch, of New York, in a most interesting article for the Troy Daily Times entitled "A Historic Church" gives a detailed account ot the early pioneers of Schodaok Landing and of the Reformed Protestant Dutch church built by them as early as 1670. He further mentions the name of Barringer among twenty whom he avers were particularly active in the spread of Christianity in the early days of Schodaok and whose family names are still prominent in that vicinity. Reference is made of the parents of Jacob Barringer, who was born in 1746, who after living a time at Wynants Kil, near Troy, became one of the pioneers of Columbia in 1796 and located his primative cabin just west of the present home of F. and F. Skinner. This frontiersman and his three sons, Philip, Jeremiah and Jonas were soldiers in the war of 1812. The deceased was a son of Jeremiah Barringer and grandson of the before mentioned Jeremiah and has been a life long resident of this town. In early manhood he marred Mary Getman, a great granddaughter of Johannes Getman, another pioneer who penetrated the wilds of Columbia in 1796 and located his log cabin a few rods east of that of the before mentioned Jacob Buringer. By the death of Philip Barringer our townspeople lose one whose kind hearted and obliging disposition was unsurpassed, and he will be greatly missed. He leaves two sisters, Lucy Ann Young and Miss Susan Barringer; two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Hoffman and Mrs. Oscar Horton and two sons, Chas. Barringer, of Ilion and Herbert, with whom he resides.

Mrs. Oscar Horton died Saturday afternoon after a long illness at the home of her niece, Mrs. Mattie Wier, in Mohawk. Mrs. Horton was a former resident of Mohawk, but moved to South Columbia about 1900.
Frances Leora, daughter of Philip Bessinger [sic] and Mary Katherine Getman, was born in Columbia September 12, 1852. She married November 12, 1873, Oscar Horton, and, after a few years in Whitestown, they moved to Mohawk, where Mr. Horton was in charge of the State scow, and later the electric works. Soon after 1900 they became residents of South Columbia, where Mr. Horton died February 22, 1922.
Mrs. Horton remained in the home until Illness compelled her to go to the home of her niece, Mrs. Mattie Wier of Mohawk, who cared for her during the winter.
Frances Horton came from a long line of Revolutionary and patriotic ancestry. She was a fifth generation descendant of Philip Barringer, a pioneer of Schodack Landing, who was instrumental in building the Reformed Protestant Church in 1610, and was particularly active in the advancement of Christianity in the early days of Schodack. Of the four children, Jacob served in the Revolution and then located in Columbia in 1796 where he and his sons, Jeremias and Jonas, served in the War of 1812.
Mrs. Horton attended the Reformed Church. She was a member of Mohawk Chapter, O.E.S. A brother, Herbert Barringer, of South Columbia survives.
The funeral was held from the home of her niece Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and was private. The Rev. Tunis W. Prins of Herkimer Reformed Church officiated. Burial was made in Columbia Cemetery.

- FRANKFORT NOTES
Frankfort, April 16__A. C. Getman, a veteran of the Civil War, will be 83 years old Tuesday. (Utica, NY Daily Press, Tuesday, April 17, 1928, p 23)
- 1930 census, Frankfort, Herkimer, NY (242 Second Avenue) fam # 219 - Getman Addison, owns his home with a value of $5000, owns a radio, ae 84, married at age 19, born in NY, parents born in NY; Henrietta, wife, ae 81, married at age 17, born in NY, parents born in NY.- Reared in Columbia, Addison G Getman received such public schooling as then was available for the children of that period and supplemented this by studies in the West Winfield Academy and in the Whitestown Seminary, with a view to taking up the profession of the law. As a further course along this line he began to read law under the preceptorship of Thomas Richardson, attorney, in Frankfort, and after a year of study there continued his reading in the law office of Samuel and Robert Earl of Herkimer. By this time the Civil war had been in progress for some time, and in 1864 he abandoned his law studies and enlisted for service in the United States navy, and in this capacity rendered service to his country until honorably discharged following the close of the war in 1865. In the late summer of that year Mr. Getman was married, and instead of renewing his interest in the law settled down to farming in German Flats. Some time later he bought a farm on the outskirts of the village of Frankfort and for fourty years made his home on that place, the farm is now occupied by his son, Charles S. Getman. For years Mr. Getman had been one of the most ardent advocates of intelligent road betterment throughout this region, and about twenty years ago, when it became apparent that permanent highways were absolutely essential on account of growing automobile traffic, he was appointed local inspector of state road work, and in this capacity had charge of the completion of road No. 14, the construction of which had been take on by the state from the contractors. In 1908 he was elected commissioner of highways for the town of Frankfort, under the old law, and for five years served in that responsible capacity, during that time doing much to further the interest in good road work and to stimulate local efforts generally along that line. In the exercise of the duties of this commissionership Mr. Getman had attracted the notice of good road advocates and experts in other parts of the country and his services were sought by the Minnesota highway commission, which employed him to go to Minnesota and give instruction to local road builders there in the proper use of steam traction power in road construction. Upon completing that detail of service he was appointed district supervisor of highways, at large, for the state of New York, serving under civil service regulations, and thus had a wide field of service in the Fifth district and then in the Fourth disrict, and in the latter continued his active service until his retirement a few years ago, advancing years warning him to that it was coming time to retire. Mr. Getman is a democrat and has given service to the public in other capacities than that of a road builder. He has served as president of the village of Frankfort and for twenty-two years served as trustee of the village from district No. 2. For fifty-seven years Mr. Getman has been a member of the Masonic order, affiliated with Olive Branch Lodge, No. 40, of that ancient order at Frankfort. He also affiliated with Inperial Lodge, No. 216 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, at Frankfort, and was a member of Frankmann Post of the Grand Army of he Republic at Frankfort until that post of this patriotic order was compelled to relinquish its charter and disband, on account of the diminishing number of its members. He also for may years has been a member of the local grange of the Patrons of Husbandry a East Schuyler. (History of the Mohawk Valley)

A deep feeling of gloom overecast the entire community Saturday evening when it became known that Mrs. Phila Whitney, wife of ex-school commissioner Harrington P. Mrs. Whitney, in company with her granduaghter, Miss Bernice Richardson, left her home on West hill with a horse and carriage at 4:30 o'clock, Saturday afternoon. after driving about two and a half miles, and when near the residence of Mrs. Alonzo Avery in the town of Frankfort, the horse became unmanagable. The carriage be came in contact with a tree near the road side, throwing Mrs. Whitney to the ground. In the fall the unfortunate lady received injuries from which she soon expired. Her granduaghterwas not seriously hurt, and calling to her aid the nearest residents, the body was removed to the farmhouse of Mr. Heneka, on the Bargy road, and the family notified of the accident. After an examination had been made by Dr. A. J.
