Two weeks later, they faced the enemy at Harper's Ferry, VA. Historians differ as to why but General Miles surrendered to General Sherman, but due to the sheer numbers of troops they were paroled the next day, Sept 16, 1862 and allow to leave in peace but without rations or supplies.

Clark Goodbread Returns to the Home of His Boyhood. Health Shattered but Feels Imroved.
After an absence of 32 years Clark Goodbread of Bristol, Ill., returned to the home of his boyhood last week. At present he is stopping at the home of his brother John Goodbread of Minden. He has suffered from accidents and is in poor health but his traveling companion stated that the nearer he got borne the higher his spirits arose. Goodbread has been something of a wanderer in his time and for long lapses of time his relatives have been without word from him. Of late years however he has been located in Bristol, Ill., and recently he felt the call of the Mohawk which resulted finally in his pulling out for home. He was accompanied by Fred Rider, of Bristol, Ill., who will remain for a few days visiting. Besides the brother in Minden where Clark is now stopping he has a brother in this village, Perry Goodbread. Undoubtedly Mr. Goodbread will note many changes in the place since he left it thirty two years ago.
