7528. Alvin Frederick

 - GFG # A 713

 - Obituary (The Daily Leader, Gloversville, NY, undated, 1893)
A saloon fight which ended in the death of one of the participants and the arrest of another was the news that greeted the ears of the peace-loving citizens of Johnstown when they arose Sunday morning.
The unfortunate victim of the affair was Alvin Frederick and the man charged with causing his death is Charles Blow. These men with several others were in J. B. Bromley's hotel on Market street about 11 o'clock Saturday night eating clams, when a dispute arose as to who could eat the most clams. The lie was passed and finally Frederick and Blow clinched; several blows were struck and the men went down together. It is said that after Frederick fell he; was kicked in the head by Blow, after which he gasped once or twice and died on the floor of the saloon. It is also said that as the men fell, Frederick had Blow's fingers between his teeth, biting them until they were badly lacerated.
The men in the place were thoroughly frightened and in a short time the news was on the street. Officers were called in and Blow was placed under arrest and taken to jail, while Frederick's body was carried to the undertaking rooms of A. B. Wanting.
Coroner Phillips of this city was notified and he summoned the following jury Sunday morning: George E. Johns, foreman, John Morrison, Sidney Plants, Peter Lynaugh, Charles Hodson, Joseph H. Cross, Samuel Robert, Milliard Christman, Geo. Froelich, Paul Snyder. After viewing the remains the inquest was adjourned to Wassung's undertaking rooms on Main street at 2 o'clock this afternoon to listen to the testimony. More than 20 witnesses have been summoned to appear.
The autopsy was held on Frederick's body Sunday at Wassung's undertaking rooms by Coroner Phillips, assisted by Dr. Beebe and Miller, and Dr. Burdick's student. George Brooking. A fracture of the skull 2 1/2 inches in length was found near its base. The heart was found to be in a healthy condition, although it has been claimed that he died of heart disease, brought on by the violent exercise during the scuffle.
Alvin Frederick was less than 19 years of age. He was the son of Nelson Frederick, a well-to-do farmer residing about seven miles west of Johnstown on the highway leading direct from Johnstown to Ephratah village. The deceased had worked on his father's farm all summer and this fall had been hop picking and returned Wednesday. Saturday, in company with others, he came to Johnstown. The maiden name of the mother of the deceased was Getman and she has been dead seven years. She was a member of the numerous and well known Getman family residing throughout Fulton county. The unfortunate son was a robust young man, in perfect' health and of a quiet and peaceable disposition. His remains were taken from Johnstown to the home of his childhood yesterday afternoon.
Charles Blow, who had the altercation with Frederick, resides in Johnstown, is about 32 years old, and has a wife and two children, and is a blacksmith by occupation, having for some time worked in the shop of L. Smith on Market street.
The funeral service of the unfortunate victim will be held from the Methodist church in Ephratah village at 1 o'clock tomorrow. The remains will be interred in the Rural cemetery near that village.
At first the death of Frederick was looked upon as an accident, but later developments indicate that there is more of the case than at first appeared. District Attorney Wright has taken testimony of some of the witnesses and he is represented at the inquest this afternoon.

 - Obituary (Daily Leader, Gloversville, NY, Monday, January 6, 1896)
Saturday morning Nellis Getman, supervisor of the city of Johnstown, received intelligence of the death of his father, Jacob A. Getman, which occurred at his residence at Ephratah, very suddenly that morning. He arose at his usual hour feeling as well as usual and after partaking of breakfast, went out and did the chores, returning again and seating himself by the fire, and in five minutes dropped quietly into that sleep that knows no awakening, without seeming to evince any pain or to give any notice of his feeling unwell. It is supposed to have been a case of heart failure, as he had scarcely known what sickness was during his well spent life of nearly sixty-six years, never having been under the doctor's care. The greater part of his life was spent upon a farm, and some three or four years since he gave up agricultural pursuits and removed to the village of Ephratah to enjoy in leisure his well-earned possessions. He was well and favorably known throughout that entire section of country and enjoyed to a high degree the honor and respect of the community. Besides a wife, he leaves three sons, Nellis, residing in Johnstown, Raymond, residing at Rochester, Asa, living at home, and one daughter, Mary, also residing at home.

The death of John Elkhanah Leavvitt aged 50 years, occurred Thursday at his home, 218 South Melcher Street, Johnstown, following an illness of five weeks of Bright's disease. Mr. Leavitt was twice sheriff of Fulton county and was connected for a term of twenty years with the state conservation commission as fish and game protector and was one of the most prominent and popular of Johnstown' s older residents.
Mr. Leavitt was born in Martinsburg, Lewis county, November 1, 1839, the son of Joseph B. Leavitt and Lydia Bliss. The family moved to Fulton county when he was but one year old.  They located in the town of Stratford. where Mr. Leavitt received the education which was then offered by the district schools. He was united in marriage to Catherine Nellis of Ephratah, August 20, 1863, and they took up their residence in Gloversville, where Mr. Leavitt successfully conducted a meat business for many years. Mrs. Leavitt died in 1882.

 - Newspaer Article (The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Saturday, February 14, 1920)
The death of former Sheriff John E. Leavitt at his home in Johnstown Thursday, removes one of best known and most popular residents of Fulton county. Practically all his long life—and Mr. Leavitt had rounded out. four score years—had been passed in Fulton county, where for the greater part of the time he had been in public Office. It is safe to assert that no present day resident of Fulton county had more or better friends and there will be a feeling of genuine regret whenever he was known that John E. Leavitt had passed on.
Genial, companionable and always kindly and accommodating, Mr. Leavitt had scores of friends and accuaintances in Fulton and Hamilton counties. As sheriff of Fulton county he gained a wide acquaintance, while later as the chief game protector of this division of the Adirondack region for a long term of years he increased the large aquaintance that he gained as the sheriff of the county. His outstanding quality, aside from his honesty and integrity and his proverbial good nature and kindly disposition, was his loyalty to his friends. Mr. Leavitt always remembered them and had a kindly word for them and in return he was held in the highest regard and esteem by scores througout this county and vicinity.
John E. Leavitt's public service was of the stamp and character that reflected creditably to the county he represented in whatever capacity he served and it was equally creditable to the Republican party which he was loyal and steadfast member of from the time he gained his majority until the day of his death, Johnstown loses a splendid and Fulton county one of it's best known citizens and highly regarded residents.
