 Schuyler Lake - ...  John W. Yates died at the home of his son-in-law, Byron D. Rose, Feb. 21st, aged 73 years. Mr. Yates lived on Twelve Thousand for many years, where he owned a saw mill and labored faithfully to support his large family. He was the father of 8 children, 6 of whom survive - Charles, Willard and Mrs. Dora VanHorn, of Colorado. Reuben, of Cooperstown; John, of Mohawk, and Mrs. Wm. Rose, of this village. After his wife's death, 17 or 18 years ago, he came to live with his daughter, Anna, and since her death has continued to make his home with her husband and children. Mr. Yates was a kind and upright man and practised religion as it is described in James 1:27. The funeral was held Sunday, Rev. J.O. Lappeus conducting the services. Wm. Rose and Reuben and John Yates accompanied his remains to Dolgeville Monday, where they were placed by those of his wife.

  RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Sunday night Horace Shults was found dead on the Southern New York Railway right of way, a few feet from the south sidewalk of West Main street. Evidently he had started to walk down the track soon, after the last southbound car had passed. It was known that he was a victim of heart disease, the ascribed cause, of death.

William Getman of Springfield, who had been to Cooperstown on business on Monday, started for home in the evenong. driving on the ice on Otsego Lake When nearing the shore at Five Mile Point he drove into a hole in the ice and was drowned. His team was also drowned.

  HARTWICK - The death of Mrs. Melinda (sic) Getman occurred at the home of her brother-in-law, Horace Getman, who resides north of the village. The funeral was held July 22, at the home, conducted by Rev. Albert Loucks, Interment was made at Cooperstown.

  Mrs. Melinda Getman, widow of the late William Getman, died at the home of her brother-in-law, Horace Getman, Hartwick, where she had been cared for the past two years, on Saturday, July 20th, 1918, aged eighty-eight years. Mrs. Getman was a woman liked, and esteemed by all. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Allie McManus of Pierstown, Mrs. Charles Van Sternberg of Christian Hill and Mrs. George Wait, of Richfield Springs, also by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial was made in Lakewood cemetery on Monday, July 22nd beside her husband who died about thirty-five years ago.

  The death of Mrs. Grace Waite Waters, aged eighty years, a highly esteemed resident of Fly Creek Valley, occurred at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital on Friday of last week. She had been admitted to the institution the day before.
  Mrs. Waters was born in the town of Springfield on May 25, 1860, the daughter of William and Malinda (Wilson) Getman. In 1881 she was united in marriage with George Waite who died in April. 1936. In 1937 she married Fred Waters who survives together with two nephews, Dorr Getman of Fly Creek Valley, and Harry McManus of Fly Creek.
  She was a member of the Fly Creek Valley Grange and attended the Twelve Thousand church. Many friends will mourn her passing.
  The funeral was held from the Ingalls Funeral Home here Monday afternoon with the Rev. Wilbur C. Dodge, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Lakewood cemetery here.

  Hartwick, March 15 - Eliza Dingman, wife of Horace Getman, died today at 2 p.m. at her home, on the Burlington Road, of pneumonia, Last week she attended the funeral of her brother-in-law, the late John Cox, and soon afterward was taken ill. the funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. J.A. Dillon of the Christian church will officiate and the interment will be in the Hartwick cemetery.
  The deceased was the daughter of the late Benj. Dingman and Amanda Newkirk, and was born April 21, 1851. Most of her life has been passed here. she was one of a family of 13 children. Surviving her are her husband, one son, George residing at home; one brother, Marcene Dingman, residing near Utica, and one sister, Mrs John Cox, and a foster son, Hermon Dietz.

He was born September 9. 1876, in the Town of Springfield, the son of Horace and Eliza (Dingman) Getman. He never married. For a number of years he was employed on the Southern New York Railroad. He is survived by a number of cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, from the Patterson Funeral Homein Hartwick, with the Rev. Joseph McDonald, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery.

  Raymond McEwan of  47 109th St., a retired self-employed interior decorator, died yesterday at Brunswick Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Canajoharie, he lived in Troy most of his life. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lansingburg.
  There are no immediate survivors.
  The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday from the Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th

  EPHRATAH - Darius Getman, aged 79, passed over on the other side on Tuesday morning at about five o'clock. Mr. Getman had been sick nearly all the winter with lung difficulty, and a few weeks ago he felt quite a little better when he appeared out on our atreet again, and took a heavy cold thus throwing him into a relapse from which he never recovered. He was a member of Garoga Lodge No. 300 F. and A. M., which he took an active part in and was acting as tyler of his lodge. He was also a member of the Reform church and was one of the deacon's of his church. He was always in his place there when be was able to get out and a man whom all respected. In politics, a Republican, but of late years he had not taken an active part. He leaves a wife and daughter, Mrs. Leonard Martin of Gloversville; also one sister, Mrs. Sweitzer of Johnstown; and three brothers, Thomas of Sammonsville, George of our village, and Aaron of Fonda. Besides a host of other relatives to mourn his loss, also a large circle of frineds who will miss him. The funeral was held on Friday from the Reform church. Rev. Goodell, pastor of the M. E. church, officiated. After the service the Masons went through their burial service and it was fine. There were present several members of the Fort Plain lodge who took the lead in their service. The remains were laid at rest in the family plot in the Rural cemetery. Mrs. Getman wishes to return her thanks to all for their assistance and kindness to her during the sickness and death of her husband.

  The death of Mary, widow of Darius Getman, occurred at the home of her brother, Clark Getman, 103 Burton street, Johnstown, Saturday morning at 1:45. Death resulted from complication of diseases. Mrs. Getman possesed a loving disposition and was highly regarded by all who knew her. She was the oldest daughter of the late Josuah Getman and Catherine Campman. She was born 67 years ago on the 16th day of March in Ephratah and had resided there until about two months ago. She was a devoted member of the Reformed church of Ephratah and also a member of Rebekah
lodge 245, of that place. Her death will be mourned by all who knew her. Mrs. Getman is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Snell of St. Johnsville; three brothers, Clark of Johnstown. Ellsworth of Ephratah and James of Nelliston, and several nieces and nephews. A prayer service will be held at the home of her brother, 103 Burton street, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and the funeral will be held at the Reformed church of Ephratah, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

   Thomas Getman, aged 83 years, one of Fulton county's oldest residents. passed away at his home, No. 7 Prospect street, Johnstown, Monday. He had been confined to his bed almost continously during the past two months and death was due to hardening of the arteries.
  Mr. Getman was born February 10, 1831 in the town of Ephratah and made his wome within the boundries of Fulton couney, He was the son of Robert and Lucy Young Getman. The greater part of Mr. Getman's life was spent as a farmer on the Old Indian road near Stone Arabia. About 1890 he left the farm and wngage in the contracting and building business. He was naturally skillful in carpentry, even when engaged in farming, and he became known as one of the best frame builders in his section. About seven years ago he retired from active business. Mr. Getman also resided in Sammonsville for a time. During his residence in Johnstown he had made numerous friends. His genial and cordial manner toward all was a characteristic that endeared him to a large acquaintance. For a number of years he was a prominent member of the Reformed church of Fonda and held a number of offices in that church. Since going to Johnstown he had become a member of the Presbyterian church.
  On November 25, 1852, Mr. Getman was united in marriage to Alida Vrooman, who survives him. His other immediate survivors are one daughter, Mrs. John P. L. Miller, of Johnstown; five sons. Robert Getman, of Lincoln Neb.: former Sheriff Martin L. Getman and Dr. Volkert L. Getman, of Gloversvllle; Henry Getman, of Albany Bush, and Sidney Getman. who resides in New Jersey; one brother, Aaron Getman, of Fonda, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sweltzer. of Johnstown; also sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

  Mrs, Alida Getman, aged eighty-four years, widow of Thomas Getman, died yesterday morning about 4:20 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. L Miller, in Prospect street. Mrs. Getman was born in Montgomery county, May 21, 1832, but had resided in this city for the past ten years. She was a good, consistent christian woman, having affiliated with the Reformed church of Fonda at an earlier age, but of late years had attended the Presbyterian church of this city. She was active in the affairs of the church and had a host of friends, all of whom will be grieved to learn of her death.
  Mrs, Getman is survived by five sons, F. Robert Getman of Lincoln, Neb.;
Martin L. and Dr. V. L. Getman of Gloversville; Henry H. Getman of Albany Bush and Sidney Getman of Jersey City; one daughter, Mrs. J. L, Miller of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Matilda Vrooman of Gloversville; fifteen grandchildren and twelve greatgrandchildren.
   The funeral win be held at the home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev, Charles McKenzie, D. D. will officiate and Interment will be made at the Sand Flats, The sons will act as bearers.

Mr. and Mrs. Getman were married in 1852 at the residence of Volkert Vrooman by Rev. Douw Van Olinda of Fonda, and have always resided in this vicinity. Mr. Getman was born in 1831 and Mrs. Getman in 1832. About fifty guests were present, who contrfbuted some valuable and beautiful presents, among which were $25 in gold from the children, and gold coins and other valuable gifts from other guests. Among those present were Mr. and Mfs. Martin Getman, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Dockstader, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Getman, Mr. and Mrs. V. L. In 1909 he began the practice of his profession in Gloversville, where he is enjoying an extensive patronage.  From 1890 to 1900 he was engaged in newspaper work with the Brooklyn Daily Standard Union. He is a member of State Homeopathic Medical Association, New York Homeopathic Alumni, Alpha Sigma, Oneonta Lodge, No.466, F. and A. M., R. A., F. 0. E., F. 0. M., K. 0. T.   Dr. Volkert Lincoln Getman. 84 a physician in Gloversville since 1909, died yesterday morning at 8:35 in his home, 144 North Main street, following an illness of a year His condition had been critical for four weeks.
  Dr. Getman was born Aug. 11 1888, in Sammonsville and attended school in that village until he was 18 years of age. He entered the employ of the Fonda Democrat after leaving school and served three-year apprenticeship after which he located in New York city and started the study of medicine in the New York Medical College and Flower hospital After a four year course, he was graduated in 1904.
  Dr Getman was located in Oneonta a short time and then took a two-year course in the Chicago eye, ear, nose and throat hospital from which he was graduated Jan 18, 1908.
  He came to Gloversville in 1909 where he had a lucrative practicice until his health became impaired forcing him to retire a year ago.
  He was a member of the First Presbyterlan church. Blue lodge of  Masons, Cyprus Temple, and the Commander chapter and Council of Johnstown, the Loyal Order of Moose. Maccabees. Fulton County Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the New York Homeopathic and American Institute of Homeopathy.
  The survivors are hia wife, Jessie; one sister, Mrs John L. Miller of Johnstown, and several nieces and nephews.
  The funeral will be held in the Eugene Hollenbeck funeral home 4 Second avenue. Sunday afternoon at 2 30 with the Rev. Martyn D Keeler of the First Presbyterian church officiating.
  Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.

He wasa born July 21, 1835 at Ephratah and was a carpenter by trade. Mr. Getman is survived by three sons, Aaron of Johnstown, Philip of Ephratah and Leszter of Frankfort: also three daughters. Mrs. Arthur Waterman of Johnstown, Mrs. George H. Long of albany and Mrs. Ward P. Beck of Fonda. One sister Mrs. Elizabeth Switzer of Johnstown also survives.
  The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 o'clock, the Rev. Herbert Finch officiating. The interment will be in the Ephratah cemetery.

  Funeral services for Lester Getman, 63, were held at the undertaking parlors of A. C. Swartz &. Son this afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Johnson, pastor of the Ephratah Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was made in
Ephratah Cemetery.
   The deceased was born in the Ephratah section of the town of Palatine and was a son of George and Rachel England Getman. He spent many years of his life there and he also spent some time with the late James Getman in Nelllston.
  Mr. Getman met death in a tragic manner, his body being discovered in the Barge Canal about two miles, east of Herkimer by boys who were fishing.
  Of late Mr. Getman had  been living with his brother, Filmore, in Herkimer, but last week Monday he left with his belongings stating that he was going to Henderson to work. Nothing further was heard from him and an investigation showed that he had not reported at the place he intended working.
  Two grips, a gold watch, bank books and some money are unaccounted for. The body was identified  by the brother and an autopsy was performed by Coroner Graves of Herkimer. State Troopers and Herkimer County officials are investigating.

   Joshua Getman, age 26 enlisted on August 9, 1862 at Ephratah, NY to serve a three year tour. Mustered in as private with CO E the August 15, 1862. Regiment Rendezvoued in Fulton, NY and at the end of the month, they boarded trains for Sandy Hook, MD to meet up and join the Army of the Potomac. Two weeks later, they faced the enemy at Harpers Ferry, VA. Historians differ as to why but General Miles surrendered to General Sherman, but due to the sheer numbers of troops they were paroled the next day, Sept 16, 1862 and allow to leave in peace but without rations or supplies. Wounded while on picket duty before Petersburg, VA - no date - Wounded again, July 30th 1864 in a mine explosion at Petersburg, VA and in action October 27, 1864 at Darbytown Road, VA Mustered out 3 June 1865 at Albany, NY

  On Saturday last as several men were at work in Snyder & Cranker's stone quarry in
Nelliston, a large derrick, with which stone  were being hoisted, fell, striking Joshua A. (sic)
Getman breaking three ribs, fracturing his spinal column and otherwise injuring him. He was removed to his home and Dr. Douglas Ayres was summoned. Althongh his limbs became immediately paralyzed he remained conscious most of the time, and his injuries are such as will render him a cripple for life should be survive. The doctor thinks that recovery is possible, although not at all probable. He has a wife and five children.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday and will be private. Friends may call Wednesday, between 9 and 5 p.m. Rev. Peter Haller will conduct the service. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

  FONDA—Alpha Switzer, 73, of the Town of Mohawk, died Friday morning about 10;45 o'clock at the Falrchild Convalescent home, Johnstown, where he had been a patient three weeks. He had been in ill health two years.
   Mr. Switzer was born in the Town of Palatine, Montgomery county, Sept. 8, 1869, son of Jacob Switzer and Elizabeth Getman Switzer. He had resided in the Town of Mohawk for 40 years and followed the occupation of farmer. He was an attendant of Fonda Reformed church. His wife, Effie, Cool Switzer, died in 1936, and since that time had been retired.
  The survivors are one brother, Elmer Switzer, and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Nixon, both of Johnstown, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at the A. G. Cole funeral home, Johnstown, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock  with Rev. Harlow S. Parsons of the Baptist church officiating. Interment will be In Ephratah cemetery.

  Mrs. Effie Cool Switzer, wife of Alpha Switzer, passed away last night at 5:30 in the Johnstown hospital. She had been in failing health for the past four years.
  Mrs. Switzer, who was 55 years of age, was bom October 15, 1880, in the Town of Ephratah, the daughter of DeWitt and Emma Duesler, Cool.
  She was a resident of the Town of Mohawk for 26 years and during the past four years had resided near this city, on the extension of South Melcher street.
  Mrs. Switzer attended the Methodist Episcopal church of Ephratah and had many friends in this vicinity who will mourn her passing.
   She is survived by her husband, two sisters, Mrs. Charles Walrath of St. Johnsville and Mrs. George Fletcher of Johnstown; brother, Gordon Cool of Johnstown, and several nieces and nephews.
  The remains were removed to the A. G. Cole funeral home to be prepared for interment and will be taken to the late home today. The funeral will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 2. Interment will be made in the Ephratah cemetery.

 - Obituary (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, NY, Thursday, March 31, 1927)
  Fonda, March 31.—Aaron Getman, aged 85, of thla village died at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday night of hardening of the arteries at the Nathan Ltttauer hospital in Gloversville, where he had been a patient for about ten days, although his health had been declining for two years. Mr. Getman was born June 4, 1841 in Fulton county, a son of Robert and Lucy Young Getman. He was engaged in farming during all his active life, but for a long period had been retired. His home had been in Fonda and vicinity for 45 years, and his life in the community was such as to win for him the respect of all with whom he was in any way associated. His wife, who was Miss Phoebe Switzer, died many years ago. Mr. Getman is survived by two sons. Henry of Fonda and William of Toledo.
  The funeral will be held at the home of Henry Getman Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. H. C. Cussler, pastor of the Fonda Reformed church, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery, Sand Flats.

  Mrs. Aaron Getman died at her home in the town of Mohawk, Montgomery county, Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Getman was the mother ot Wm. Getman of this city.
  The funeral will be held Friday at the Reformed church, Fonda, at 11 A. M., with prayer at the house at 10 A. M. Interment will be made at Ephratah.

  Fonda, March 2.—Monday afternoon about 4 o'clock the news that Ernest Getman had died came as a shock to the community. As reported in last evening's Recorder, Mr. Getman had been up-street Saturday and was out also on Sunday, but Sunday afternoon he developed brain fever, and heart trouble and passed away as above stated. Mr. Getman was the son of Aaron Getman and Phoebe Switier, and was born July 3d, 1880, in the town of Johnstown, but has resided in Fonda nearly all his life. By his kindly, genial disposition he had endeared himself to a host of friends, for all who knew him, liked "Ernie" Getman, as he was familiarly called. He has been in the employ of the New York Central railroad as baggageman at this station for 14 years and his courteous and obliging manners have always been commented on. December 24th, 1912, he was married to Miss
Mae Geary, and while they have so far resided at her home on Main street, they were about to go to housekeeping on April 1st in a home of their own and also make a home for Mr. Getman's aged father, his mother having died when he was quite young. Mr. Getman's death comes as a sad blow to the young wife and his father. Mr. Getman was a member of Cayadutta council, No. 1,406, Royal Arcanum. He is survived, beside his wife and father, by two brothers, Henry Getman of Fonda and William Getman of Toledo,Switzer of Fonda.  and an uncle, Conrad Switzer of Fonda. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Reformed church, the Rev. H. C. Custer officiating.

Marriage Notes for Ernest C Getman and Mae Geary

 - Wedding Announcement (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, NY, Thursday, December 26, 1911)
  At the home of Mrs. Louise Geary on Sunday afternoon at four o'clock took place the marriage of her daughter, Miss Mae Geary to Earnest C. Getman. The Rev. H. C. Cussler of the Reformed church officiated. In the presence of only immediate relatives and friends. The bride was attired in a dark blue serge tailored gown with hat to match and was attended by Miss Lettie Nellls, of Johnstown, while the bridegroom's best man was Donald Bearcroft, of Fonda. After congratulations and a bountiful wedding dinner the young couple departed on the 6 o'clock train for Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, Chicago and other western points. Many beautiful presents of silver, cut glass, linen and money attested to the esteem of friends of the bride, while New York Central and F. J. & G. employes gave a handsome five piece mahogany parlor suit to Mr. Getman as an expression of their regard for him. Mr. and Mrs. Getman have been lifelong residents of Fonda. The bride is of attractive personality and possesses many accomplishments, while the bridegroom is a genial day baggageman at the New York Central station and a host of friends extend hearty wishes for a long life of happiness and prosperity. The guests were relatives from Schenectady, Johnstown and vicinity.
