- (Obituary (Watertown Daily Times, NY, Saturday, May 31, 1919)
Corporal Nelson J. Burdlok, aged 27 years. son of Mrs. Ella Carlisle
Burdick and the late Wayne Burdick, formerly of this city, died Friday at Fort Ontario, Oswego, according to a telegram received here Friday evening. Mrs. Burdlck will arrive here today from Oswego, accompanying the body of her son. The funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Corporal Burdlck died of wounds sustained in service in France, part of one lung being almost completely destroyed by shrapnel He was a member of Company C. 126th Infantry, sanitary detachment He entered federal service March 28, 1910, at San Diego. Cal., and left for overseas service June 6 from Fort Riley, Kans. and for several months was stationed at Bordeaux as corporal in the medical corps, being later transferred to Field Hospital No. 124. His
detachment sailed for France June 6, 1918.
Relatives failed to receive word from him for several months and
finally a letter came announcing that he had been wounded in the heavy fighting Oct. 11, 1918.
In his letter he reported that he had received a shrapnel wound in his left arm, causing a fracture. He wrote that he was recovering rapidly. His letter waa dated Nov. 11, 1918. He arrived in New York
city Jan. 20, and was cared for in Greenhut hospital. New York city, and a few weeks later was removed to Fort Ontario, where he had been snice early in February. An operation performed about the middle of February for the removal of shrapnel that had entered one lung about five months before. He recived five shrapnel wounds in all, all of which healed satisfactorily with the exception of the one in his lung.
It was thought for a time that he was recovering and relatives expected that he would soon be discharged from the hospital. Complications developed later, however, and during the past week his condition had been critical. He passed away Friday afternoon.
He was born in this city, Oct. 11, 1891, son of Mrs. Ella Carlisle Burdick and the late Wayne W. Burdick and resided here up to 1903 when the family moved to San Diego, Cal., where be entered federal
service.
His unit saw much active service. Late in August he was doing first aid work in the front lines and he served in tbe Argone forest during the terrible battles of tbe last days of September and early October. On the morning of Oct. 11, his 27th birthday anniversary, be received aeveral shrapnel wounds ia his chest and left shoulder, one piece going within an inch of his heart and lodging naxt to the spine.
He Was in Base Hospital No. 63 until Jan. 28, when he arrived in
New York. During this interval the family had received no word from him and had no idea of his condition. Since his transfer to Fort Ontario, he had undergone four operations, but his case was fatal. He suffered intensely for months, but endured it with the fortitude of a soldier, and leaves many who will regret his death.
The funeral will be held in St. Paul's Episcopal church Sunday afternoon at 2:20. Rev. E. C. Tuthill, rector, will officiate. Interment will be in Brookside cemetery. Besides his mother, Mrs. Ella C. Burdick, he leaves a brother, Lewis C. Burdick, and a sister, Mrs. Charles W. Fry both of Deferiet. N. Y. He was a grandson of ex-mayor Neoson Burdick and a cousin of John N, and Floyd L. News reaches this city that the dead body of Reuben Empie of Ephratah, who had been missing since Monday, was found yesterday in one of the streams in that neighborhood, would be buried today.
Empie was a man about 49 years of age, and his habits were intemperate. After his disappearance some effort was made by his brother to discover his whereabouts, but no systematic search was begun until yesterday, when a force of men was set to work dragging Caroga creek. The body was found under some bushes growing close to the water's edge, some distance below the dam, and notice of the drowning was conveyed to Coroner Lefler at Johnstown.
