Harriet, wife of Luther Tuttle, passed away at her home in Averill street at 4:15 o'clock Sunday afternoon as the result of a stroke of paralysis which she suffered that morning, aged 78 years. She had been in rather feeble health for some years past owing mostly to her age but she had been able to be about most of the time and to look after her household duties. Sunday morning she arose apparently as well as usual. Her son Frank was making preparations for breakfast and he heard his mother fall to the floor. He rushed to her assistance and a physician was hastily summoned by nothing could be done.
Mrs. Tuttle was born in Herkimer county 78 years ago, her maiden name being Osterhout. The early years of her life were spent there but following her marriage to Mr. Tuttle who is also a native of the same county they located in this section and had remained here. For a few years they conducted the old Bowne farm below Brasie Corners. Mrs. Tuttle was a member of the Methodist church and she had many friends in this village and section.
Besides her aged husband who is in very poor health at present, she is survived by six sons, Fred, Frank and Byron of Gouverneur, Robert of Ogdensburg, Floyd of Watertown and Charles Tuttle who lives near Utica. A son and a daughter died several years ago.

Luther L. Tuttle one of the oldest residents of this village, died at 5 o'clock Thursday morning at the Grove hotel, where he had lived for the past two or three years. He had been in poor health for a long time, although had not been confined to his room long.
Mr. Tuttle was born in Herkimer county, January 18, 1828, and he was therefore 87 years, 8 months and 4 days old at the time of his death. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hull Tuttle who came here in 1840 and located on a farm in the Peabody district of this town. There were several sons in the family all of whom have now passed away. When (20 years old or thereabouts) Mr. Tuttle returned to Herkimer county where he followed farming for a few years and while there he married Miss Harriet C. Osterhout, whose death occurred four days previous to his own. After their marriage they came to this section and for many years they followed farming in this and surrounding towns. For a few years they operated the Bowne farm below Brasie Corners. For several years Mr Tuttle was employed as a teamster at the St. Lawrence Marble works after he gave up farming.
For several years past he had been in charge of the Bowne property in this village. He was a man who always managed to be busy and he was very thorough in his work. We had many lifelong friends here owing, to his genial disposition and many excellent traits of character. He was a good neighbor and a loyal friend and he will long be remembered by those who knew him intimately. He was a very interesting talker on Gouverneur and its early history, as his parents arrived here 80 years ago when he was about 8 years old.
He is survived by six sons, Fred, Frank and Byron of Gouverneur, Charles of Deansboro, N. Y., Floyd of Watertown and Robert of Ogdensburg.
Another son, Edward, died about 30 year ago and an only daughter died during recent years.

 - Obituary (The Citizen, Herkimer, New York, Tuesday, March 24, 1885)
  STILL ANOTHER TRAGEDY.
Yesterday morning word was sent to Coroner Warner of Ilion, that a man had committed suicide near Petri's Corners about ten miles south of Herkimer. After the coroners return he furnished the following facts.
Oliver Burton Gates, a farmer aged 55 years, until yesterday lived on a farm of 40 acres in the town of Columbia. Yesterday morning he arose as usual at 6 o'clock and went out to do the chores: at 7 o'clock, his son Harry went out to the barn to call his father and found him hanging to an apple tree near the barn, having hung himself with one of the reins to a harness. The body was warm when found. Deceased recently lost $2,000 by the failure of a bank in Ohio and the loss had made him very despondent. Ill health had also somewhat affected his mind, and these circumsrances are supposed to have caused his death. Dr. Warner impanelled the following jury: H. J. Cristman, J. O. Bliss, Len Shaul, Menzo Crim, Israel Shepard, O. E. Shaul, N. A. Stearns. Four witneses were sworn.
Dr. Cristman made a post mortem examination. On the stand he stated that he had known deceased for ten years and had noticed that he was not all right. "Mentally he was erratic, incoherent and visionary." The jury rendered the following verdict:
That Oliver Burton Gates came to his death in the :own of Columbia on the 23rd day of March, 1885, between the hours of 6 A. M. and 7 A. M., by his own hands, from hanging with a strap from a limb of a tree near his barn, and the jury say that cause was melancholia. Deceased leaves a wife and the son referred to.
