HURT IN RUNAWAY
DEATH FOLLOWS
----
George H. VanSlyke, one of the first settlers of Brown county, died Sunday morning at 5 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Chapman, in Ordway township, four miles north of Aberdeen, aged 78 years and one day. On last Thursday afternoon Mr. Van Slyke was thrown from his buggy about a mile north of the Lockington packing plant in the northeastern part of the city. His horse became frightened and ran away, throwing the old man out onto the ground where he lay helpless. William Bengs witnessed the affair and went to the aid of Mr. Van Slyke, taking him into his own buggy and proceeding to the home of William Chapman, the son-in-law of Mr. Van Slyke.
INJURIES WERE SERIOUS
It was at once seen that he was badly injured, the hurts being internal, and in spite of all that could be done he gradually sank, his age being against his recovery, till the end came on Sunday morning. He was born in New York state, and in 1852 left his native state and settled in Minnesota, leaving Ortonville in July, 1881, to locate in Brown county. He took a homestead eight miles southwest of Aberdeen, living in the town part of the time, and after proving up removed to Aberdeen, where he resided up to about three years ago when he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Chapman.
As a contractor and house mover, Mr. Van Slyke was a familiar figure here for years and there is not one of the old time residents who was not acquainted with George Van Slyke. For a number of years he resided in what was formerly known as Squatterville, in West Aberdeen. He was a widower for the past thirty years, but is survived by several children, they being Mrs. William Chapman of Ordway, Mrs. John Smith of Grand Forks, N.D., Mrs. Fanny Pennington, Cottage Grove, Minn., Mrs. John Sax of Farmington, Minn., N.H. Van Slyke of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Asa Van Slyke of California.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Chapman home four miles northeast of town. Rev. T.J. Dent officiating. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery.

Between tbe hours of 12 and 1 o'clock on Sunday morning, at his home on High street, occurred the death of Irvin Petrie, a well-known and highly esteemed citizen of this village, aged 50 years. Deceased was born in Ilion and during his residence here of his entire lifetime, had been highly respected by the entire community and faithfully filled every position in life to which he was called.
For many years he found employment in the Remmington works and afterwards in the typewriter works. He was a skilled mechanic, an accurate workman and his services were highly prized.
Deceased was for a long period connected with the fire department of the village, having been an active and honored member of ---- and hose company No. 1, which organization disbanded a few years since, after an invaluable service of nearly a half century. Deceased was also a member of the Exempt Firemans' Association. H will be greatly missed in all those circles in which he had so long been active.
Besides a widow, deceased leaves a son, Ira Petrie, and two daughters, Hattie and Carrie Petrie, to morn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. The warmest sympathy is extended to the afflicted family.
The funeral was largely attended from the late residence of the decesed on Wednesday afternoon, when the services were conducted by Rev. A. C. Loacks of the M. E. church. Beautiful and appropriate singing was furnished by the DeKovan guartet.
Members of the Exempt Fireman's Association attended in a body; also the shopmates of the deceased from the typewriter works. The floral tributes were many in number and very beautiful. The interment was made in Armory Hill cemetery.
