After a week's illness of pneumonia, Mrs. Nancy Bellinger Clapsaddle died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Libbie Clapsaddle Getman of Ford Avenue, Oneonta, Wednesday, Oct. 19. Mrs. Clapsaddle was the daughter of John Bellinger and Elizabeth Edick, his wife, and was married to Damon A. Clapsaddle of South Columbia, December 13, 1864, and passed much of their married life here, but moved to Oneonta before 1890. Since Mr. Clapsaddle's death, about 4 years ago, she has made her home with her daughter, who has ministered to her every need. Funeral services were held Saturday in Oneonta at 4:30 p. m. and Saturday the funeral party came to Richfield Springs on the 10:17 car, and drove to the Columbia Cemetery, where prayer was offered at 11:30 and the remains placed beside that of her husband and little daughter, Matie, who died in 1872. In this cemetery, six generations of Clapsaddles are taking their long sleep, the eldest being Barbara, the widow of Major Dennis Clapsaddle, who was killed at the battle of Oriskany where Lieut. Col. Peter Bellinger and son, Col. Frederick Bellinger, ancestors of the deceased, helped gain American Independence. She is survived by her daughter, three grandsons, Albert, Herbert and Damon, and one sister, Mrs. A. R. Warren of Syracuse.

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, October 21, 1897)
From the Oneonta Star we take the following report of the sudden demise of an old and esteemed resident of Columbia, who was well and favorable known here: Of the brittleness of the thread to which life hangs, no stronger reminder could be given than in the sudden going out from earth, yesterday morning, of one of Oneonta's most respected citizens. D. A. Clapsaddle, manager of the brick manufactory on the Plains, who lived at 70 Dietz street, left for the yards yesterday morning in good health. Attending to his duties there, but not feeling well, he drove to the village, stopping at the store of Geo. E. Moore in the early afternoon, and complained of a pain in his chest. He was advised to go home, and a mustard plaster applied seemed to bring relief, and he expressed himself as felling much better on the arrival of Dr. A. D. Getman at about 3 p. m. he afterward went to bed, obtained a refreshing sleep, and when he arose to all appearance was nothing ailing. No thought being entertained than that Mr. Clapsaddle was fully able to do so, he sat in pleasant conversation with Mr. Brown, of Schenevus, who had called to see him, when, without any premonition, with only two long breathings, Mr. Clapsaddle's head fell back, he slipped from his chair and when loving hands went to his relief it was found that his spirit had thus suddenly departed. A greater shock could not have been received either by his friends or the community when it was realized that Mr. Clapsaddle had thus instantly been summoned from life. The immediate friends who are left to mourn his demise are a widow, one daughter, Mrs. A. D. Getman, of 18 Ford Avenue, this place, and a brother residing in Syracuse, all of whom will have the strongest sympathy in this, the hour of their great bereavement. The remains of Mr. Clapsaddle were brought to the residence of his uncle Alonzo Hatch, of South Columbia, where funeral services were held at 10 o'clock this morning. Interment in the family Cemetery near Columbia Centre.

 - The following is taken from a 2004 ebay auction.
old Clapsaddle original postcard from the 978 Series published by International Art Publication Company. Carries the Clapsaddle signature in the lower right corner. How many postmarked Clapsaddle postcard from this era do you see? Especially given this wonderful condition! In preparing this auction, I did some background research on Ellen Clapsaddle. Ellen graduated from Richfield Springs Seminary, New York, in1882 and followed with a couple of years at the Cooper Institute in New York City for art training. Then she returned home and placed an ad in the local paper announcing she was offering painting lessons in her home at South Columbia. When Ellen's father, Dean, died in 1891, Ellen and her mother moved in with an aunt in Richfield Springs. She spent her next 14 years teaching art lessons to people. Ellen started doing illustrations, landscapes, portraits, and some free lance work through the mail. International Art Company (the publisher of this postcard) purchased several of her designs. After the purchase and use of several of Ellen's designs, International Art offered Ellen a paid two year trip abroad for her and her mother. There she would study and refine her art talents at the parent company and be closer to the actual manufacturer of paper goods. Ellen was forty years when she accepted the full time position with Wolf Company. She had been free lancing for International Art, along with several other artists, for six years. During the eight years with Wolf, her success had reached such a peak that there seemed to be no limit to the growth potential for her, the company, or the post card industry. Ellen invested heavily into German post card industries upon the advise of the Wolf brothers who did the same. The company was doing so well they sent her to Germany to work with the their engravers. In August, 1914, Ellen was in Germany and got caught up in the outbreak of World War 1. Factories were burned, records destroyed, and messages never received. It wasn't long before she became a displaced person, penniless and alone in a foreign land. The Wolf brothers were among them and completely wiped out. One of the brothers borrowed the last bit of money left and went to Europe in search of Ellen. Six months later, Ellen was finally found. She was walking the streets, hungry, sick and alone at the age of fifty-one. She barely recognized Mr. Wolf when he approached her. Wolf brought her back to New York where he could take care of her. She no longer had the ability to earn a living and her health declined rapidly. On January 27, 1932, Ellen Hattie Clapsaddle was admitted to the Peabody Home on Pelham Parkway in New York City. Ellen had lost all mental reason and sat and played with toys until her death two years later. January 7, 1934, one day short of her 69th birthday, Ellen Hattie Clapsaddle died. She died penniless and alone with no record of her accomplishments. It wasn't until after World War II that she would find her resting place next to her parents in Lakeview Cemetery in Richfield Springs. Her marker is at her feet and simple says, "ELLEN." International Art Publishing continued to produce Clapsaddle cards after Wolf Company folded.
