Vernon Reid, 88, passed away on December 9, 2011, surrounded by the love of his family.
He graduated from Gustine High School and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941. He fought in WW II from 1942-45 and in the Korean War from 1950-52. In 1945, Vernon received a Purple Heart for his courageous service in the Pacific Theater when the ship he was serving on, USS Hovey, a destroyer/minesweeper, was hit and sunk by enemy fire. Vernon was injured but survived the attack after being thrown into the water where he awaited rescue, while many of his crewmates did not survive.
In 1952, Vernon married the love of his life, Patricia, while renting a room at her mother's Boarding House on Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco. They started a family in San Francisco and in 1962 they moved to Santa Maria where they remained and raised their family. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past August.
Following his Navy service, Vernon worked for ITT Federal Services at Vandenberg Air Force Base and retired in 1988, after 27 years of service.
Vernon was a member of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
Mr. Reid is survived by his wife, Patricia Reid, sons, Scott (Meredith) of Vancouver WA, and Jay (Linda) of Buellton, CA, daughter, Carol of Oklahoma City, OK, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, sister, Erin Fellers of San Francisco, CA, brother, Larry Reid of WA, and brother-in-law Stan Zorn of Modesto, CA.
He was a kind and gentle man and was part of the "Greatest Generation" - a very distinguished group.

36614. Vernon Paul Caldwell

 - GFG - C

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Vernon P. Caldwell passed away on March 27, 2014 at home surrounded by family. Vern was the son of Paul and Leah Caldwell and Patrick J. Brennan. At the age of 6 Vern's biological father passed away and the honor of raising him was passed on.
Vern was born on September 30, 1927. He graduated from Boise High School, Class of '46, after which he enlisted in the 82nd Airborne, U S Army. After his service and honorable discharge from the Airborne Paratrooper Division, he continued his education at the University Of Idaho and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
In 1953 he married the love of his life, Anne Milinkovich. Their marriage exemplified love, honor, and commitment for over sixty years. They lived in Denver, Grangeville, and Lewiston before settling in Boise. Their first son, Jeff, was born in 1957, and their family was completed with the birth of their second son, Curtis in 1961.
Vern was employed by H J Heinz Company, Strevell Patterson Finance Company, First Security Bank Of Idaho, and Farmers And Merchants Bank. He belonged to Kiwanis International and served as its club president. Vern especially enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and was a champion duck caller. When a flock was overhead and nobody else could bring them in, he did. He was a master at the feeding call chuckle. He and his wife took many worldly trips and excursions with high school friends and their wives. Living in Boise for so many years, he became an avid Bronco fan. In his later years he became quite the gardener and had the tomatoes to show for it, naturally attracting all the neighborhood squirrels. He would watch them for hours. He fed them throughout the cold winters. Even during his last days he'd ask, "Did you feed the squirrels"?
He shared and passed along countless gifts and blessing to all, but the greatest gift was the example he set. His faith in Christ, to be Christlike was his nature. That was his path he stayed true to throughout his years. Kind, gentle-hearted, compassionate, always composed, a man's man, and a true gentleman are all understatements. He was the best husband, the best father, and the best grandfather that anyone would hope to have in their life. His nurturing to those around him never stopped. And it never will.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 3rd at St. Mark's Catholic Community, 7960 W. Northview, Boise. Private family interment will be at Morris Hill Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian.

36637. Chris Lee Mangum

 - Obituary (Find A Grave / Idaho Statesman on December 6, 2009)
Chris Lee Mangum, 46, passed away at a Boise hospital on Dec. 4, 2009. He was surrounded by his family and many loving friends.
Chris was born to Calvin D. Mangum and Verna L. (Adams) Mangum in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 23, 1963. He was the middle child of five boys. He was 5 years old when his father passed away, and was raised by his loving mother and grandmother.
He moved to Idaho in the early 70s and made his life here until his passing. He attended Vallivue schools and made many lifelong friends. Together they shared many of life's memories. Before he became a father himself, he loved many nieces and nephews, and got his practice in.
On Jan. 18, 1991 he became the beloved husband and soulmate of Tracy L. (Morrison) Mangum, and they raised three beautiful children - Nina Marie Mangum, Calvin Lee Mangum and Tony Major Mangum. He loved his "kids." He also had one very special grandson, Blake Michael Shrader, who brought joy and love to him daily.
If you knew Chris, you knew he loved camping, hanging with family and friends, doing word searches, and watching T.V. He especially loved to hang with his dearest friend Matt Davis. He was the center of our world and knew just how to take care of each of us.
He would help anyone, neighbors, strangers, friends, it didn't matter. If he saw a need he was on it. He was employed for 13 years at Circle J Trailers, until his layoff in July 2008.
  He missed his job.
He is survived by his wife Tracy, his daughter Nina, his sons Calvin and Tony, his grandson Blake, and one very special great-nephew Hazen; his brothers, Dwayne (Darene) Mangum, Tony (Darlene) Mangum and Will Mangum, along with nieces and nephews who meant the world to him and gave him so much love during the years. He will be missed beyond words.
Go rest my love, I will see you in heaven.
