33953. Florence Mildred Gilbert

  Florence M. Hendrix, 80, formerly of Homer NY and currently of the Groton Nursing Home, passed away February 19, 2010 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. She was born February 15, 1930 in Cortland NY.
  Mrs. Hendrix was an area resident all her life. She was employed by Chris Craft Boat Mfg. and with Smith Corona Corp. in Groton. Florence was a past member of Memorial Baptist Church. In her spare time she enjoyed search word puzzles, crocheting, and velvet cross-stitch.
   She is survived by her husband of 61 yrs Frederick "Fred" Hendrix of Groton NY, daughter June Sebring of Cortland NY, brother James Gilbert of Killawog NY, grandchildren Victor (Michelle) Davis, Shelby (Donald) Batsford, Frederick Sebring, great grandchildren James Davis, Samantha Davis, Adin Batsford, nieces and nephews.
  She was predeceased by her parents Calvin and Madelin Gilbert, and son Jacob Hendrix.
  Calling hours will be Thursday 2-4 pm with a funeral service to begin 4 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland NY. Spring burial will be in the Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden NY.


Marriage Notes for Florence Mildred Gilbert and Frederick Russell Hendrix

 - Wedding Announcement (Cortland Standard, NY, Friday, July 30, 1948)
  Miss Florence Mildred Gilbert daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin C. Gilbert of 9 1/2 Winter Street, and Frederick Hendrix of 54 Pomeroy Street, were married in the Cortlandville Grange Hall, Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. Rev. Orio D. Sewart of Locke performed the single ring ceremony uniting the couple in marriage. Harry French of Cortland played the traditional wedding marches.
  The ceremony was performed in front of and arch of lattice work of crepe paper and green vines and Shasta daisies beside the pillars.
  Mis Clara D. Gilbert, ,sister of teh bride, was maid of honor, and Jacob Hendrix acted as best man for his brother.
  Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attired in a white wool suit with lace blouse, white accessories and she wore an orchid corsage of whte roses.
  After the wedding ceremony 56 relatives and friends attended a reception for the bridal couple, The bride's table was adorned with the traditional bride's cake, a four-tier, topped with a minature bride and bridegroom, and an arrangement of white gladioli and sweet peas.
  After a short trip the couple will be at home at 54 Pomeroy Street. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hendrix are employed by the Cortland Baking Company.

  Jacob Eugene Hendrix, two and a half year old son of Fred and Florence Gilbert Hendrix, 54 Pomeroy St., died this morning at the Cortland County Hospital.
  He was born on Nov. 4, 1950 in Cortland.
  Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, June, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hendrix, Cortland and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Gilbert, cortland; and four uncles and four aunts.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at the home, 54 Pomery St. Interment will be in Dryden.

  Miss Anna Van Dee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Van Dee,
Virgil, and Calvin Gilbert Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Gilbert, 9 1/2 Winter St., were married Dec. 27 at 2:30 p. m. in the bride's home by the Rev. George Severance, pastor of Virgil Methodist Church.
  Miss Bessie Van Dee was her sister's maid of honor. Gene Paul
King, Homer, served as best man for Mr. Gilbert.
  A reception for relatives and friends was held at the Van Dee home after the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert now are residing at 7 Church St.
  As a bride-to-be, Mrs. Gilbert was honored at showers given by Mrs. Grace Oliver and Mrs. Francis King; Mrs. George Van Dee and Mrs. Joseph Natoli; and Donna Jones.

  Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Gilbert Jr. of R.D. 3, Cortland, announce the engagement of their daughter, Nancy Ann, to Lawrence G. Nordgren, son of Mrs. Maureen E. Nordgren of New Britain, Conn, and Alfred A. Nordgren of Portsmouth, Ohio.
  The bride-to-be is a senior at Cortland Senior High School. Her fiance graduated from New Britain Senior High School in 1969 and has recently completed 3 1/2 years of active service in the U.S. Navy.
  No date has been set for the wedding.

  Miss Nancy Ann Gilbert, of Cortland became the bride of Sandy Floyd Samson of Homer in a double ring ceremony this afternoon at 1:30. The Rev. Emil Premru officiated in the First United Methodist Church of Cortland.
  Baskets of gladioli and assorted flowers decorated the church Mrs. Enid Stubbs, organist, provided traditional wedding music.
  Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Gilbert Jr., 1046 W. State Rd., Cortland, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Samson, 2 Morgan Dr., Homer. The couple was attended by Mrs. Sonya Dellow of Cortland, RD 3, as matron of honor; Mrs. Raymond Samson of Cortland and Mrs. Mark Gilbert of Varna, sister-in-law of the bride, as bridesmaids; Alan Tyler of Cortland as best man; and Mark Gilbert of Varna, brother of the bride, and Kim Dellow of Cortland, nephew of the bridegroom, as ushers.
  The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, chose an A-line gown of crystellete and lace with a matching chapel train trimmed with lace motifs. The bodice was designed with a standup collar and bishop sleeves with lace at the wrists. Her headpiece of Venise lace with seed pearl trim, held a two-tiered
veil of illusion and she carried an arm bouquet of red roses.
  The attendants wore identically-styled gowns of dotted voile designed with square necklines edged with daisy Venise lace, Mrs. Dellow in melon, Mrs. Samson in green and Mrs. Gilbert in lavender. They wore matching ribbons in their hair and carried arm bouquets of white roses, ferns and greens.
  Cake and punch were served in the church hall which was decorated with streamers and bouquets of flowers. The wedding cake, made by Minnie King, was served by the bride's sisters, Sharon, Judy, Susan and Kelly Gilbert.
  A 1973 graduate of Cortland Senior High School, the bride is employed by the Cortland Savings Bank. Her husband, a 1970 graduate of Homer Central High School, served with the U.S. Army in Southeast Asia and is also employed by the Cortland Savings Bank.
  Pre-nuptial events for the new Mrs. Samson included showers given by Mrs. Norma Samson; by her sisters and her aunts; by Mrs. Sonya Dellow, her matron of honor, and one by Mrs. Gloria Dellow, sister of the bridegroom.
  Mr. and Mrs. Samson will reside at 10 Clinton Ave., Cortland.

 - Obituary (Cortland Standard, NY, Thursday, December 16, 1971)
  Mary I. Bell. 34. of 13 N. Franklin St., Cortland, died Wednesday in the Auburn Memorial Hospital. A resident of this area all of her life, she was born Aug. 4, 1937 in Cortland, the daughter of Calvin and Madeline Gates Gilbert, who survive.
  Other survivors include her husband, Donald T. Bell; seven children, all at home: Donald Jr.. Michael. John. David, Tina, Denise and Cindy; three brothers. Calvin Jr. and James Gilbert, both of Virgil; and Gordon Gilbert of McLean; four sisters, Mrs. Florence Hendrick of Virgil; Mrs. Clara Loomis and Miss Faith Gilbert, both of Cortland, and Mrs. Elsie Marshall of Lake Como; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Mrs. Bell was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church of Cortland.
  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Baptist Church, the Rev. Donald Ryder, pastor officiating. Interment will be in the Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden.
  Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wright Beard Funeral Home.

  Judith Lynn Griffin, 74, of Homer, passed away January 12, 2015 at the Crown Center Nursing Home.
   She was born November 17, 1940 in Cortland the daughter of the late Robert and Natalie Ackerman Gates.
  Judy was lifelong resident of the area.
   She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army of Cortland for many years. Judy also provided in home care to the elderly. Her family and friends will cherish her memory as a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Those who knew her will remember her as “Grandma Judy”. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting and solving crossword puzzles.
  Judy is survived by her sons Michael (Lora) Cavanagh of Dryden, John Cavanagh and Robert A. Cavanagh of Homer, her grandchildren Alexa, John, Dana, Tianna, Justin, Michael, Matthew, her sister Nancy Gates of Penn Yan, her “sister” in law Renee Gates of Little York, nieces and nephews.
  A calling hour will be held Friday 1-2 pm with a funeral service to begin 2 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045.
   Spring burial will be at the Cortland Rural Cemetery.
  Contributions may be made to the Cortland Salvation Army, 138 Main St., Cortland NY, 13045.
