 - Obituary (Utica Daily Press, Friday, March 19, 1937)
Mrs. Alice Griffin Hatch, the widow of Marshall Hatch and "mother" of the local Legion post, died yesterday afternoon, Mar. 18, 1937, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Hatch, in recognition for her work for soldiers during the World War, was adopted by Hugick-Shepard-Purcell Post and was presented a gold-headed cane. The only daughter of W. D. Griffin and Mary Margaret Myers, was born Aug. 22, 1847, at Little Lakes in Warren, Herkimer County. In 1856 the family became residents of South Columbia, where she attended the local school in Jordanville, Mrs. Scott's Young Ladies' School at Richfield 8prings and the West Winfield Seminary. November 1. 1865, she was united in marriage with Marshall Monroe Hatch, by her uncle, the Rev. Philander Griffin of Buffalo, and they went to live at the Hatch homestead in Columbia. Here she and Mr. Hatch celebrated both their 50th, and 60th anniversaries and passed the 62nd in 1927.
Their only child, William A. Hatch, of 1867, married March 13, 1889. Carrie E. Burgess and also lived at the homestead, where their only child. Carrie Alice, was born Oct 19. 1898, and died two days later. Mr. Hatch died in March 1927 and the following fall she and her daughter-in-law, Mrs., William A. Hatch, moved to this village. They were well known as antique collectors and attracted patrons from all over the state to their shop. Mrs., Hatch was outstanding in her historical work in the community and had valuable papers in her home, which she hid written and which are as yet unedited. Through the generosity of the late Mrs. Douglas Robinson, those pertaining to Jordanville were put in permanent form and placed in the Jordanville Library. It was when Theodore Roosevelt was President that his sister, Mrs. Robinson, and her husband gave Mr. and Mrs. Hatch two gold serving spoons for their golden wedding and Mrs. Robinson contributed a poem for the, occasion. A strong friendship marked the relationship between the two families.
Mrs. Hatch was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church at South Columbia and through her initiative, a service was held there every summer, which attracted a large number from the Mohawk Valley and from this vicinity.
Before the D.A.R. began marking Revolutionary graves; Mrs. Hatch was instrumental in having 90 marked, both Revolutionary and from the War of 1812. She was a member of the Mohawk Valley Chapter, D.A.R. of Ilion until she transferred to Ganowauges Chapter of this village, where she held the office of chaplain for some time. She attended the Presbyterian Church where her father was an elder for 40 years. She was the historian of the Town of Columbia and had acted as a correspondent for several newspapers for many years.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. William A. Hatch.

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, Thursday, May 17, 1928)
A large circle of friends braved the cold to be present at the Masonic committal service of their life member, the late M. M. Hatch, in the Columbia Cemetery, Sunday afternoon. Friends from Albany, Fort -Plain,- Mohawk, Illon, Montlcello, Schuyler Lake, Jordanville and Richfleld Springs, together with' those from the home town.
 - Richfield Springs Mercury, Thursday, March 15, 1928 ~ MARSHALL HATCH ~ None in this section is held in higher respect than was Marshall Hatch of South Columbia. Rugged in character as in physique, he lived through his long span of life, simply and honestly, wronging no man, helping many. Every obligation of citizenship he met fully, conscience and the light of intelligence given him being his guide. Loyalty to home and family was one of his outstanding virtues. In friendship he was constant, sorrowing in affliction ~ rejoicing when his friends were joyful.
 - In Memoriam ~ Brother Marshall M. Hatch, who had nearly completed his 56 years as a member of Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482, F.&A.M., passed to that Bourne whence no traveler returns, on Friday morning, March 9th, 1928, closing a long and useful span of life. His remarkable vitality was but the inheritance of hardy pioneer ancestry, and even though the caravan of many years had passed him by, the charm of his youthful spirit distinguished him to the last. Thus it will be difficult to envision him as one who is to be seen no more. For generations he has been a familiar figure in this community, genial in his approaches and genteel in his ways. His citizenship was a model; his life one of cleanliness and sobriety; his character, sound and worthy. His brethren, met at this regular communication, deplore his death but rejoice in the memory of his long and eminently respectable career in our community, and in the rich friendship he gave to all. We hereby adopt this memorial and incorporate it in our records, as a last token and expression of appreciation, affection and esteem. ~ Olen Hopkinson, Jay Hopkinson, Lester Bryant, Committee
