GLOVERSVILLE—A 12-year-old Gloversville boy has been selected to receive a bronze medal from the Carnegie hero fund commission for sav ng the life of a skating companion on December 29, 1957.
MARK S. CLEMENTE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clemente of 329 West Fulton street, has been cited for saving John P. Gottbehut Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gottbehut, 315 West Fulton street, from drowning.
The incident occurred on a frigid Sunday afternoon while the two youths and other companions! were skating on the West Mill pond near their homes.
Gottbehut, who is 13 and considerably larger than his rescuer, was attempting to save his dog, who had fallen through the ice, when he went through Into some eight feet of water.
While aid was being sought, rescue attempts were begun with the Clemente youth stretching out on the thin ice. Anchored with his skates, he managed to get within about three feet of the hole and pull the heavier boy pond with his jacket.
When rescuers arrived, the Gottbebut boy was out of the pond and in good shape except for chills. Meanwhile his dog ha d made his own way out of the frozen water.
Mrs. Clemente said last night 'that the family had not yet received any official notification of the heroism award. They had learned of it through newspaper contacts.
Mark, who just turned 12 is in the sixth grade at the McNab elementary school. She pointed out that her son was 10 when the incident occurred and about a head or so smaller than the Gottbehut boy.
The mother remembered that Mark had been recommended for the award by former city Recreation Superintendent N. Arthur Bleau. The boy was later chosen as one of four in the state to be recommended for national recognition.
